I'm really digging the black version.

As far as the complaints go, this happens every hardware redesign without fail.

I skipped both 4 and 4s because I dint like design and also because of shape that did not fit hand as good as 3GS used to do.
I really expected AAPL to come up with something improved to that extend, seems that my long wait was useless.
There is still some hope that original is better than possible decoy, otherwise I will wait for Samsung Note 2 expected end of this year... Big screen and this time jumbo storage!

Looks too similar to the 4-4S form factor...But uglier. Obviously, this design isn't too far off from the current design. It looks like a lazy rendition of what they already had.

This is exactly how I feel about the design. The most egregious change is the two-toned back... I guess Apple wanted to differentiate it from the 4/4S, but I don't think that was the best solution they could have come up with. I also don't like the way the FaceTime camera looks above the earpiece.

One thing that I do like about it is the headphone jack on the bottom. That was one of my favorite things about the iPod touch. Other than that, I'm not particularly impressed with the changes.

Here is how the design liking goes for Apple fans...

Leaks: "I hate it! Un-Apple like, they would never do that, looks terrible!"
Official: "Best design ever! Gorgeous, amazing, only Apple could do that."

Just as Tim Cook said last night... even when the product sucked, Apple fans would buy it up... dell people would buy HP if a dell producted sucked... but Apple people only bought Apple.

Or how oh my desk at work, I put my phone in the dock and still have my headphones plugged in listening to music, I couldn't do that with this one.

yes you could. Just unplug the dock from the 30 pin, install the awkward adapter, lay the phone on your desk, plug in the headphones and jam away. See, simple.

Quoted for future reference, let's see how we all feel in another years time

I'll feel exactly the same. I will still hate the black bars. The iPhone 4 prototype was a great design when I first saw it. That means I'll feel exactly the same when this will be the next design. Jony could do it better. Just get rid of the bars.

I try not to get wrapped up in rumors and leaks because most of them turn out to be fake. But to answer the question asked here, I do not like the design if it keeps the same look as the 4 and 4S. I hate the way a 4S feels in my hand unless it has a case on it. I would prefer something with more rounded edges.

I'm OK with the design, but definitely nothing "magical" going on here. What gets me is that Steve was said to be involved with the design of the next iPhone before his death. Really? This design looks pretty similar to the 4 and 4s. Here's the article (many online besides this):

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-20120919-64/steve-jobs-last-big-project-the-next-iphone/

Well hey, Sir Donald Bradman scored a duck in his very last innings*. It can happen!

*Apologies to non-Australians who probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

I like it. And I think I understand the need for the glass bands at the top and bottom. However I preferred they keep the 3 1/2 inch screen but the front panel looks fine to me also. I'll definitely be buying this year.

Headphone jack on the bottom is just stupid. How can you lean the phone upright in your car while plugged in? The phone needs to be upside down for the most efficient cable routing.

It's a matter of preference. I have a first-gen Touch with the headphones on the bottom and I find that better when it's sitting on my desk. It's also better for me in the car because I can sit the Touch in the cavity above my stereo (I don't have a cradle) and the cable "points" in the right direction.

Those pictures make me even happier to have a 4S.

Seriously, the aluminum/plastic striping on the back looks horrible. The wraparound strip looks like chrome, which would scratch very easily (think, iPod) and looks cheap as well.

I sincerely hope this is not the redesign. It looked like a half baked attempt to make a profit. Not something I'm a big fan of.

There's no chance this is a real iPhone leak. Apple would never design something so hideous. I can't believe anyone actually likes this, its just a longer iPhone with some odd layer on it for no reason.. If anything with a screen size change its gonna be what happens on the inside of the phone to make room for a bigger screen, not the body. Thumbs down to this for sure, on design and reality.

I strongly feel you will be eating your words come October. All the evidence from different sources at different times comes together and clearly forms a picture of this being the next iPhone.

When the iPhone 4 was left in a bar a lot of people said it couldnt be the real thing for various reasons. Particularly with regards to its design.

If two tone phones dont seem fashionable now, THEY WILL

I was abit shocked when i first saw the images...but im fine with it. glad we dont have the bar of soup slippy cuved design. I totally understand how they arrived at this design...if you dont "understand" then you know nothing about product design and basic design mantra or design compromises. If you dont like it....learn to LOVE IT or go elsewhere.

honestly when I first saw it I went "that is ugly." But now that I look at it again with a more open mind I am beginning to like it. It's not that bad at all. I can easily see myself owning the white one.

Though honestly who knows if this is what it will really look like. I honestly don't care what "rumors" have been pointing too and all that. I don't ever believe any rumors until I hear it officially announced. This goes for any company, not just Apple. If it is the official design then I'll welcome it. It's not that bad.

Plus who knows what it will look "officially" when Apple puts their finishing touches on it. It'll be very shiny probably and the two-tone back might look pretty good. The Apple logo just seems hidden/faded. I would think Apple would at least want that noticeable. Unless maybe it lights up when in use? That'd be cool!

I think this is one of the biggest problems with getting deep into Apple's ecosystem.

Whatever the new iPhone looks like, whatever features it does or does not have, if you want/need a new phone, you have no choice but to buy what Apple makes. The only alternative is to move away from iOS, which I know a lot of people would be loathed to do.

And with the 12 month (or more) product cycle, (as well as faulty home buttons, intermittent sleep buttons, self-switching silent switches and crackly headphone outputs) this is why, whatever Apple produce, thousands will be queuing to buy it.

It's like when Apple decided to produce computers with chiclet keyboards. I absolutely hate the MacBook Pro and now MacBook Air's chiclet keyboard, but have no choice but to put up with it. I yearn for the day when they release a laptop with a decent keyboard (and USB 3!).

This is something Android and Windows Phone users enjoy - the ability to choose from numerous different makes and models of phones. If you have a GS2 and don't like the look of the GS3, you have the option to choose a different Samsung or an HTC, Sony, etc etc.

You keep your phone in your shirt pocket, while plugged into the wall and headphones???

Yes, noisy office environment. Wall cord (can't plug into USB on comp due to security reasons) is longer than headphone cord so this arrangement allows more mobility in my cube (6' x 8'). I guess I could get one of those armband things, but I may at any moment have to go to an unplanned meeting or give a brief.

I DID say I was probably in the minority on this one.

Just seems unbelievably awkward to have the phone plugged into power while stowing in your shirt pocket...do you have an extra long power cord to make this happen?

Assuming these leaks are genuine, what do you think of the new iPhone design with two-toned back?

Wuv it. Unlike many others apparently, I actually like the bead blasted aluminium (or whatever) mid part sandwiched between the liquid metal (or whatever) unibody top and bottom parts. Which are probably electrically separated to enable their use as antennae. I also like that the headphone connector moved to the bottom, and that the speaker looks like it got bigger. Because -I'm sure we all agree- bigger is better. On the opposite, non-visible side, there's a 640x1136 AMOLED screen, with deep blacks, infinite viewing angles, and colours that actually approach reality. As opposed to the screens employed by certain competitors. The modestly larger screen will make more efficient use of the front panel, and at the same time prevents exceeding the outer dimensions of the device's predecessors. Which would of course be undesirable. The thickness -or rather, thinness- of the phone is 5.8mm, with LTE stby/talk time of 780h/56h. Only Apple could do this folks. I'm glad to be a part of macrumors.com

The iPhone 5 will have to do way more than just tweak the physical form factor to impress non-fanboys at this point. I don't even think it's worth comparing the current iPhone to devices like the SGS3...the iPhone 4S is just so far behind.
