Negligible battery improvement… but not worth upgrading for. My wallet thanks apple for that crap fest announcement.
Not even faster wired charging apple?!? Really?
Yah, disappointed when rumors said 40W charging wired.

Now I read:
Fast-charge capable:
Up to 50% charge in around 30 minutes with 20W adapter or higher paired with USB-C charging cable, or 30W adapter or higher paired with MagSafe Charger.

Well at least I can use my 15' M2 MBA compact charger which has 30W...

Myself and partner are in UK and both on iPhone 14 Pro Max’s

Last year was a miss as we really didn’t think anything much of the event…..watched this year and thought exactly the same but it was worse!

Seriously thinking of keeping our 14’s for another year…maybe then Apple might bring out a better (X) optical lens like many other brands, and some added surprise features.

The Camera Control, increased battery, and larger display are more than reason enough for me to upgrade my 15PM to a 16PM. Especially considering it will only cost me about $100 to do it.

More than worth it to use the best thing available for the next year. No mental gymnastics or coping required.

My partner and I are keeping our 14 Pros for at least another year.

Yeah considering most of us pay these as a monthly bill I see little reason to avoid it. I’ll do the Apple trade-in which will clear the last few months of my finance term and probably give me a couple hundred more towards the purchase price, and my monthly bill will stay very similar.

3 years locked with all carriers except for T-Mobile for 2 years.
And you can't have the cheap grandfathered monthly bill - you have to pay a lot more per month...
Yeah it's been a while since we did a trade-in deal with T-Mobile. They all require either activating a new line or "upgrading" our plan to one that costs $20-50 more per month for features we'd never use. Just buying our phones outright and selling or giving away the old ones now.

Another year, another pile of ridiculous, pointless posts from people pointing out the small incremental differences between the 15 and 16, and pontificating about how it's not worth upgrading.

The only people who upgrade their phones every 12-24 months are stupid or rich and stupid. Nobody else does.

Still rocking my 12 Pro Max that I bought in December 2022 - it was 2 years old then, I paid $500 for it and it's every bit as good as any 14, 15 or 16 Pro Max.

Oh, and if you're paying monthly for your phone through your carrier, that's a whole 'nother level of ridiculousness.

Perhaps there are a tiny fraction of offers out there where you actually save money, but if you actually care about your money you're buying a 2nd hand 1-2 year old iPhone for cash and paying $25 a month for your service.

But I guess some people lease cars too.

I have a 14 Pro and was hoping the 16PM would have a better main camera sensor but it's the same. To get 48MP ultra wide, I can buy a wide angle lens for the very few times when 12MP UW isn't enough. Or I can shoot a bunch of 48MP ProRaw and stitch them together. The screen sizes are just a few mm larger, CPU speed up a tiny bit in real world use.

I can wait a year...
Yeah, I agree. Maybe some of the future software with AI etc. will be better and make the camera better who knows. I think the new camera sensor in the 1x it’s supposed to be 12% larger than the current 15 Pro Max sensor. I read that somewhere from other rumored sources. I normally upgrade each year and get two iPhones because I have four lines on my account but I might just get one upgrade this year and get the gold one and see how that works for me.

Why do people constantly need to be reminded that you don’t have to upgrade the phone every year?
Just like computers/macs they can last many years between upgrades. Both the hardware and software is supported and lasting for a long time.

Agreed. Thank you, Tim, my boy, now I can save another year, not wasting money on your product that’s not worth my 12 pro being upgraded. I’ll keep it now for the fifth year. 🤪

Ridiculous take. In the not-even-grand scheme of things, monthly prices for phones are not breaking the bank. You can spend that on a single takeaway meal without trying very hard.

Certain features are clearly very good for particular people too — the satellite and SOS stuff is appealing to hikers, backpackers etc. Users who use the full extent of the camera functionality won’t be remotely satisfied by the iPhone 12.

Considering how important phones have become in our lives, I am happy to pay that monthly price. And, again considering how important they’ve become, sometimes it’s nice to use the latest, greatest and most convenient versions. For example I will be very happy with the dedicated camera button — Nokia did this well over a decade ago and it was very handy. Apple’s take on it increases that functionality, but the option to press and hold to immediately start recording is a nice touch. I have a young child who frequently does something that makes me want to get a video fast, and the moment is often lost by the time I’ve picked up my phone, done Face ID, clicked the camera icon, swiped across to Video, and hit the record button. Do that multiple times a day every day and a solution becomes appealing.

Certainly, we do not need to be “rich” to spend £30-£50 a month on a phone.

I’m likely going to upgrade from 15PM to 16PM for the 15% better battery life (up to 4 hours more) and having it run cooler. Everything else is just extra. The decision is certainly influenced from the fact that trade in values are best within the 1st year/next iteration.

Yep. It would be a nice upgrade from my 11. But I can’t imagine why anyone would upgrade annually, or be surprised that it’s not massively better than last year’s phone.
I think it’s great that we don’t need to upgrade annually. We should be pleased that we have mature tech, much like we don’t rush to replace fridges and televisions every year.

I typically do a 2 year cycle partly because I just enjoy them, but that’s a luxury. The 16 is particularly tempting because of the hardware change (camera button) and Apple Intelligence is a whole new iPhone era and the features aren’t available to older models. So I’ll upgrade, then probably not until at least the 18, but I’d be very happy if the updates stay incremental and I’ll keep it longer.

Can we all agree that the marketing cocaine that Apple normally hoovers up before these keynotes was particularly good this year?

I’ve never seen so many marginal improvements to a stale gizmo more glowingly spoken of and touted as the “best thing ever”!!!

And I think that’s my main gripe at this point. All media will support this trillion dollar company despite what was announced isn’t really that groundbreaking, or done first. I’d love for a honest review calling it not worth the money. But this won’t happen, and that makes me tired and I think a lot of other people tired.

I suppose if you were a professional photographer it would be useful, but for me my iPhone 13 pro max is more than adequate.
If you're a professional photographer, you wouldn't use an iPhone for professional photos. I was quite in disbelief when they showed asking Visual Intelligence about giving you photography tricks, "when you're a photographer".
