For me, as of now based on present information…

Gamechanger:
- layered track recording without requiring headphones in Voice Memos (for music recording)

Nice bonus:
- better heat management
- better quality macro shots
- better quality spatial video
- better quality audio recording
- Spatial Audio recording
- less wind noise with video recording (and I assume any audio recording)
- more battery life

I don’t care:
- generally slightly faster
- slightly more screen

Jury is out:
- camera control
- better Apple intelligence?

These could change once I start using the phone.

Re: all the discussion on foldables, one of the reasons I keep my phone current is that I think the aesthetics, look and feel, whatever you call it, of the foldable is awful. The whole crease thing is just a nightmare to look at imho. Seeing it in the display would drive me crazy. I really don't think they will be mainstream, but if they are I have some confidence the market of people that don't like them will be large enough there will be some options there, and in any case I'll keep my last non-foldable iPhone until it drops dead lol.

I disagree and own a Zfold 6. The crease doesn't show with some content. Depends on what you're looking at. Content that might be ruined with a crease, the creased doesn't show (like video). To me it's a non-issue, and I'm not alone here. Not only will these go mainstream, but Apple will probably be forced to join the club.

Either you can get over the crease or not. It certainly is un-Ives like, but he's gone, and the new Apple can cope with functionality, which is what a fold is about.

You have to tell me how did you achieve this feat? I game on my 13 Pro, watch YouTube, use it as GPS, social media....etc and I am at 81% after 3 years and 788 cycles.

I have no clue, nothing changed in my use this year. Had every iPhone on annual cycle upgrade and this is the first one which drops in the 80% after one year (307 cycles). When I saw this I jumped and pre-ordered the 16 Pro Max lol

Why do you have to pay the full monty? I buy from Apple so no contract. Then I trade in with Apple and put the value to the new phone. I can’t remember what my 14PM retail price was but I’ll assume around £1200-1300, and Apple is giving just under £500 for it now.
A drop from 2800 to 500 at the high end is a very different scenario to here.
Because my company pays my airtime. I'm not in America.

Here are all the changes. I think people will be surprised.
I've marked where the 15 Pro Max also raised the bar over the 14 with (15PM)

1. the battery is better (15PM)
2. thermals are better due to better efficiency of the processor and better heatsink
3. Camera upgrade (15PM 5x zoom and better main lens)
4. New camera control button (15PM action button)
5. bigger screen
6. WIFI 7
7. Camera lens coatings to stop glare and that awful alien turd appearing everywhere

8. Better processor (15PM)
9. A couple of 16p/pm only A.I. functions
10. 1 nit brightness for nighttime use
11. slightly smaller DI (minimal but better than no change like the 14 to 15)
12. Screen resolution is slightly better
13. Improved 4k video (most users won't care though)
14. Studio quality 4 speaker array
15. Better wind noise reduction for the speakers
16. New mic recording isolation

17. New ceramic shield for better durability (15PM)
18. smaller bezels (15 also reduced them but it was almost nothing)

The 15PM also introduced USBC and titanium for a lighter frame.

I think it's fair to say the 16PM is overall a bigger upgrade, but it doesn't have the wow factor of USBC and 5x zoom camera upgrades. Those were big even though the 5x zoom camera is actually poor quality and in fact worse than the 3x zoom on the 14PM. Significantly worse.

I was hoping for better A.I. implementation. the Pixel 9 has a really awesome camera A.I. post production setting that will clean up zoomed photos. It looks really good and since Apple's zoom camera is fairly average, it would be very useful to have that on the iPhone.

It's hard to argue against the fact that this year is a better upgrade than last year.

If I had the money back then, this is how my iPhone upgrade should have been:

2011 - iPhone 4s [1st iPhone]
2013 - iPhone 5s
2016 - iPhone SE 2016 or iPhone 7
2019 - iPhone 11 Pro
2021 - iPhone 13 Pro

I'll probably upgrade in 2025 or 2026

After watching the announcement, I am convinced that you should not expect the older models to receive the same set of features as the newer models... If you want the best hardware and software, then go with the latest model and upgrade the next year... Upgrading iOS version is not the same as getting the full experience on a new iPhone...
This was almost my exact upgrade path till a few years ago

iPhone 4s
iPhone 5s
iPhone 7 32 then iPhone 7 128
iPhone X
iPhone 11 Pro
iPhone 13 Pro
iPhone 14 Pr
iPhone 15 Pro
iPhone 15 Pro Max
Pre ordered iPhone 16 Pro Max

As someone who also exclusively upgraded for battery life I hope it's really improved. I admit I'm a bit sceptical but just have to wait and see.

The main reason I left Samsung for an iPhone years ago was because of all the bloatware — I always felt like they just threw a heap of "features" into the phones so they could say that they had them. But usability was borderline pathetic.

It wouldn't surprise me if Samsung do similar things with hardware — just rush something out to be first. But I would struggle to believe that right now, we can buy a flip smartphone that isn't going to have creases on that screen after being opened and closed hundreds of times every single day for 2 years.

This is a solid example of Apple's strategy. People complain about a lack of innovation but Apple will gladly sit on the sidelines of a flip phone resurgence until the foldable iPhone is actually good enough, whereas Samsung will gladly rush headfirst into the market so people can claim it's more innovative, even if the product is inferior and ultimately frustrating.
Man go through forum, fold5,6 users, poxel fold users dont seem to be frustrated at all… would love iphone fold, but apple cant deliver

Ok just seen the keynote
Very underwhelming. I have the 15pm and I need to upgrade to 512gb
But I can’t see what’s changed??
Same screen, minor size increase
Slightly faster processor
Camera control
4k120 video

And that’s pretty much it??
Even the Apple Watches and AirPods barely improved either ……I know people say this every time but I really can’t see all those “innovations” they talk about
At this point (for some years, actually) it's silly to expect massive improvements in a new phone over the previous year's model. It's too bad that you don't have enough storage on your current phone, because other than that, when you buy a high-end smart phone, you should expect at least a few years before there's enough improvements to justify upgrading it.

I upgraded from a 14 pro to a 16 pro max.

Oddly my 14 pro dropped to 85% battery life in 12 months then has been slowly degrading from there for the other 12 months to 81%. Super annoying and most noticeable battery life drop of any iPhone I’ve had. I was going to just buy a new battery but decided to try a max phone.

My 14 PM was similar - dropped from 100 to 90% in the first year, but after the second year is still at 89%

So people come here to vent about the now common, incremental upgrades with phones?

Nothing new here. People want the latest, so they pay. Carriers try to make it easier.

But how long have they had these phones? And what are their expectations? I know someone with a Fold and she loves it but I didn’t like it.

I like the idea of a folding phone. Right now even with the Flip 6 and Fold 6 they are 90% of their slab sisters tech wise but for me I think after the novelty wears off you’re left with a bulky phone that doesn’t otherwise do anything better - at least for me. Mostly I think I’d just break them. If you game, really use the pen, and have a need for what a tablet does it might make sense. When I had the note, I really didn’t use most of the multitasking and pen stuff after the first couple weeks.

I’d be interested in a flip type phone, once you don’t sacrifice battery life, and bulk. Right now it’s not worth it to have to switch from the Apple universe, and I used to switch between Apple and Android about every other cycle. I’ve been with Apple since they lost the home button.

I was the same with the Note. Got sucked in by the pen and various features but didn’t use them.

Do you feel like the screen is a downgrade on the flip phones, like going back to the days of resistive touch?

From handling the Flip and fold, they do lose some premium feel. They scratch over time because they are plastic. They feel as if they have a plastic screen protector back in the days before the thin glass stick on.

Yeah that’s what I thought. The capacitive screens used on slab phones is a significant step up and I’d feel like I was going back in time to resistive. The folding phones seem to be more of a nostalgia trip than a meaningful solution to a problem.

This is the year for me to upgrade and give my teen a phone and line. I'm interested in Camera Control as I do enjoy photography, but if Apple Intelligence is the leap they're portraying it to be ... that would be a game changer. BUT, since they portray Siri is competent I'm waiting to see the demos in stores to see how the whole package is. I'm coming from a 12 Pro Max that I still love and would probably just keep if I wasn't using it as a hand me down.
