When I used to go to Germany for weeks for work, I really started missing being able to get ice in my drinks, and iced tea. It was so hard to convince anybody that I really wanted ice, and even if I could get the point across they would usually only put in a very few small cubes.

Yeah, this is one of those weird little things that doesn't sound like much, but it took some real getting used to. By now, I must admit, I've gone native; when I'm back in the states I ask for no ice! I DONT KNOW WHO I AM ANYMORE!!!

Sometimes, when I've gone to visit family in the states I will do or eat something that is natural here, but strange where I come from and my family will just pause and look at me with a funny look.

The last time, we went to a Chinese place and I ate native style. Forgot were I was. The restaurant folks loved it. :)

And isn't it amazing how European ice is room temperature...?

I'd have to say stuffed cabbage or what was called in Buffalo, NY, "pigs in the blanket."
Others:
Jaigerschnitzel - Germany
Janiver - Holland
Pizza - Sicily
Bitburger Beer - Germany
Heinekin Beer - Holland
Fish and Chips - England
My father's grilled cheese - Oswego, NY
My Mother-in-Law's Swiss Steak -- Vegas
Conch Chowder - Key West
Coffee - Turkey

I don't quite fall in that category- I'm living where I mostly grew up- but I did live in Holland for two years when I was 14/15 and if you combine the time I spent in Italy over summers it totals to over a year.

Firstly, I miss persimmons. Oh, they have persimmons in Washington, but they're horrible in comparison. A third the size and nowhere near as sweet. I hear California has better ones, but the best I've had were in Europe.

The dinky ones I find here look like this:

The good ones I used to find in Europe that taste 10x sweeter look like this:

Then, I miss french fries. What, you ask? I miss them the Dutch way. MMM, patat oorlog...there was a place near my house that would fresh-cut the potatoes, serve them up on a fancy plate or in a cone, topped with dutch mayo (way better than the crappy american stuff that I'd never DREAM of using as a fry topping), pindasaus (a sweet peanut sauce), and then raw onions sprinkled on top.

How I love the dutch.

Oh man,I'm getting hungry.

And finally, pizza margherita from Italy. Way better than the crap over here. Oh, and there was this place called Romanelli's that was a famous little shop in downtown Brindisi in southern Italy that made the best fried pizza...they had a special recipe that they were famous for.

It took me months after moving from AZ to Canada to find the proper ingredients for all the southwestern food I love. Properly flaky tortillas, green chiles (my God, and I finally found them, of all places, in a Safeway!), refried beans, chipotle chile powder, etc.

Being Vancouver, they could all eventually be had, but I am seriously worried about next year, which I will be spending in Norwich, England.

I'm relieved to hear that peanut butter can be obtained, however. I couldn't make do without it. Nonperishable, filling, and healthy. Yum. :)

Yeah but outside of a few food items NJ sucks. I need to get out too. Can you get Taylor Ham/ Pork Roll in Virginia?

I guess Im the only one who WANTS to move back to NJ LOL :) Call me crazy, but I love that state, and of course all my friends are there. As for the Taylor ham, one store carries it. My aunt from NJ (who has lived down here for 12 years) says they just got it like 3 years ago. I gotta have my Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese, now if only I could get a decent roll to put it on :) I might have to resort to baking some my-self :)

P.S. I used to Live in Little Falls, so I wasn't too far from you, just thought I'd share LOL :)

I live about 100 miles or less from the Mexican boarder; we have good mexican food up the *** and I'm getting pretty tired of it lol. Come down to Texas for Mexican!

Little Falls, yeah we were practically neighbors. You lived practically in Soprano area. My brother moved to Virginia Beach about 10 years ago, but every time I ask him about Taylor Ham he doesn't know. At least in Virginia you can buy liquor at 7-11s, well at least wines, but I recall the bars do close early--1:30 am?

So I guess you were a frequent of 6 Brothers diner in Little Falls?

Every time my brother comes up from Virginia he want to go to the NJ diners--Lyndhurst, Tops diner and of course Tick Tock.

Maybe the area you live in sucks but NJ has a lot of great places. I live in Sussex County and its really beautiful here. Cape May county is also very pretty and has alot of charm and not as much snow as we have. I freelance in NYC, visit the shore with my kids (LBI or pt. pleasant), we live in the mountains and have quite a few conveniences.

Actually, I use to work in Nutley on the Rescue Squad and I kind of like that area so I guess each his own.

And we have GREAT taylor ham egg and cheese on roll, great pizza, great bagels.

NJ is not all about I-95, Bergen County and Essex County.

Seriously, try THE&C on a BAGEL! I like it on a roll too but its nice on a warm, toasted bagel :)

Yeah my friend used to live around the block from the Soprano house in North Caldwell.

Actually, My usual diner is/was Versailles in Fairfield, its close to my Friends house. Im ashamed to say I've NEVER been to Tick Tock

Haven't we had this conversation before :) LOL

On a side note Im glad Im not the only one who likes my Bagels toasted. We finally got a good bagel place down here, a couple moved from the Bronyx, and opened it, BUT I went in there and asked them for a toasted Bagel with cream cheese, and they got all snotty with me and said "We don't toast our bagels THEIR FRESH" I've never had a problem getting a toasted bagel in NJ.

Three.
Chesapeake Bay Blue crabs, soft crabs and Scrapple.

Can't get crabs in Illinois without astoundingly expensive shipping charges. Grew up in MD, and these were considered staples. NOTHING like a bushel of crabs with Old Bay, lots of beer and a gang of friends. And if you've never eaten a soft crab, you have not lived. As for Scrapple(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrapple), well, my wife refuses to consider it after she found out what it's made of.

i miss a lot of stuff in california. in-n-out of course, pinkberry, BRCs from el pollo loco, boba! and carne asada quesadillas from albertacos in mission viejo. i miss the 2am runs when they used to be 24 hours too.

there's a few places that were close to us out there that we went to a lot, which are out here but not convenient, like dave & busters and fuddruckers.

and i haven't taken a trip to canada in years, i really want to go get some poutine.

Originally from the New England coast and love FRESH SEAFOOD and SHELLFISH! NOt available in Southern Colorado.

Sonic

I live in Chicago and there are Sonic commercials ALL the time, but the closest Sonic restaurant is in East Peoria...130 freakin' miles away. THAT MAKES SENSE!

Also, if I ever move away, I know I will miss White Castle and Portilloes.

Green River is amazing every year, but I'm glad its only available for a short time since it really isn't that great IMO.

KFC Buffets are another thing that I wish made their way north. I have only seen them when traveling to and from Kentucky.

we get sonic commercials in connecticut and the closest one until recently was in ohio, about a 12 hour drive. they've opened a some in PA now, which is still a good four or five hours, but closer.

Gonna have to be cliché I'm afraid....

I'm English and living in Holland.....I miss 'Fish n Chips'! :(

OK...earlier when I ripped on English food, I should've given some credit to the Fish n Chips. Sorry about that. Seriously...this is one of those weird foods, like Chicago-style pizza, that seems to be un-reproducible outside of its natural environment.

Can we include things that stopped being made? :D

I miss Tex Mex Supernoodles :( Bachelors stopped making all the nice flavours :( I also miss the original Findus 'French Bread Pizzas' and, from the Zizzi chain of Italian restaurants, 'Torta tartufo al cioccolato, rich chocolate mousse on an Amaretto base' that was axed a year or so ago in a menu change. :(

A lot of my favourite (mostly junk/comfort) foods have been discontinued over the years. I must have rather niche tastes :S

all food! i had surgery on my throat last week and all i have been able to eat are Popsicles and ice cream...and i can say i hate ice cream now!:(

Haha... yeah I remembered you said you had good bagels but not rolls.
CRAZY fresh bagel people :D
