Old Good S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Evolution

You want more of Shadow of Chernobyl? This is it, deeper more interlinking quests that don't feel like busy work. Graphic's keep the original flavour, yet for a 15 year old game are impressive, even the trees sway in the wind. Adds in a lot of the original concepts to SOC that the original dev's wanted to include, however ran out of time & money. Tremendous immersion into the game world, immediately draws you in. At points the game also has a wicked sense of humour ?

Is a full free mod game, can be challenging for those not familiar to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise. You start with next to nothing, need to think and act fast to put down Bandits and get their gear. Get better hardware early on by taking out a military outpost early in game. AI in this one is out for the kill, no bones about it. It's all about skill, tactics and survival. Has to be said tremendously rewarding to play as you need to think about the quests and how best to execute them.

Feb 2022-
  • Metro Exodus (Russian RPG)- finished the main story, big thumbs up. Working on Sam’s Story, an associated DLC. Sam is the token American in this game ;), he was working at the American Embassy in Moscow when the Armageddon started. In the DLC he heads to Vladivostok to see it there is a way to head East to the USA.
  • I try to play another game besides World of Warships which I am still giving token attention to. PVP naval battles can be fun or headaches. I keep swearing I’m going to quit while still playing it.
  • I’m pondering what the third game should be. I thought Kingdom Come Deliverance might be a good game but I did not care for the complicated sword fighting. Two bad they did not make an arcade sword fighting mode. ;)
  • I’ve got a queue of several games I could try next. ? While I might try that STALKER mod Evolution @Queen6 mentioned, that would not be until after I finish the ME DLC so I’d still need the third game. :)

Are you missing anything by skipping SOC and jumping on this?
Yes and no; SOC is the original commercial release by GSC Game World, Old Good S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Evolution adds more mechanics, more complex interwoven missions/quests and has steeper difficulty curve. Generally I recomend to play vanilla SOC with just the Zone Reclamation Patch (stability & fixes). Then explore the world of the mod S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games :)

While stock SOC is dated graphically the game is so immersive you soon forget about it :) The mod game has significantly better graphics, however alters both difficulty & gameplay. Much depends on the player if they want to experience stock game or OGSE which has some storyline revisions, mostly keeping to the original while offering additional optional tasks.

Killer assault rifle (AEK-973) took a while to get and set up; 40 round Mag & Tulip scope. Characteristics are not too far off the NATO FN-FAL. Good cover & tactics it's deadly even at range and that you need in game. I moved the optical sight and mag from other weapons to enhance the AEK-973. One of the reasons why S.T.A.L.K.E.R. kill's it as a shooter?

Whoever cooked this up should be hired as major game devs. This free game literally wipes the ass of many a AAA release. Fundamentally the game has the depth of gameplay & storyline nailed. It's challenging & addictive, you want to play out this story, search every nook & cranny, be excited by heated firefights, help your compatriots, scratch you head with puzzle based missions...

Playing on Stalker difficulty level AI NPC's are absolutely ruthless, yet the game isn't unfair to the player. You just need to work the tactics as there's always a way :)

A new adventure is just a click away...

April 2022-
  • World of Warships- yep, still hate destroyers when I’m on the receiving end of huge torp volleys.
  • World of Tanks- Yes, stale, but can be fun…at times… with a friend or 2, but be careful. If you friend has much better stats than you, the matchmaker, you may find yourself the bottom tier in a great number of matches. ?
  • X4: Foundation- Space, the final frontier. Trying to get the nerve to jump back into this, currently sorting through mods, wondering if VRO is the way to go. Steep learning curve, no hand holding here.
    Is anyone familiar with this?
Anyone want to be my tutor? ;)
  • Foundation- Medieval town builder, tinkering with this, not bad.
  • STALKER- Shooter. Tried some of the game variants, free content mods, but wilted.

Still deep in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe. Just finished Lost Alpha Developers Cut (free full mod game based on Shadow of Chernobyl), completing three of the endings :) Despite some fault's a cracking game, especially as it's completely free with no strings attached

I'll likely stick with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for a while as Radiophobia 3 was just recently released and top of my playlist. I now have Narodnaya Solyanka which looks to be really good straight out the gate and Escape from Pripyat for when I want firefights dialled up to eleven

Revisited Rockstar's infamous Manhunt games again with mods to fix the glitches and bring up the graphics. The gameplay remains solid with improved graphics and QoL fixes. Content is strong to say the very least, especially Manhunt 2 where the Adult Only rating is warranted IMO. The differing psychological approaches of the games interests also the development history of the games. Safe to say Rockstar North had some balls to produce such ventures, equally I don't see why games should be censored any more than films which can and do depict far worse scenes...

The Manhunt game's differ significantly with little in common barring the egregious violence. Manhunt 2 up's the ante by a good margin on a physical/visual level in game and on a psychological level for the player who is no longer compelled to kill all in his/her path. Manhunt 2 the player has a level of decision...

Started playing Elden Ring recently and having a blast. The game is extremely unforgiving, frustrating and lacks any sense of direction, but this also makes it strangely appealing. It is obvious that it has been crafted with a lot of passion and attention to detail, it has a great atmosphere, and the design of characters and environments are truly works of art. This is the first game I can imagine playing for a very long time, since there are uncountable secrets to discover, different strategies and play styles to try out and different approaches to take.

Is this online, small servers, or local play? I’ll wait for a sale.

It’s single-player but has some online elements: you can “invade” other player’s game worlds or summon players to help you with tough fights, and you can place messages etc. that other players will see in their game. It’s similar principle to Death Stranding, where player worlds “touch” to a certain degree. I play with the inline features turned off as they annoy me.

Big update graphically & improved soundscape, game now also benefits from a 64 bit X-Ray game engine. New and reworked AI, that has far more features versus the stock games. Still dialling in settings to get the best balance of FPS & graphics :)

Game is hard out the gate (Veteran difficulty) being aimed at seasoned players. Still very early days; gameplay is challenging in a good way as its fair so far. Bandits at the factory/carpark are truly dangerous as can be the player with the right tactics and a steady eye. Taking on the Military detachment at the Cordon bridge out of the question at this point in the game, stealth being the way past ;)

Revisiting Baldur's Gate 3 to see how things have come in the past 6 months or so. Got a few new nice, but incomplete cutscenes, and a bug that won't let me exit turn based mode or end combat ? Tried a Warlock for this play through and that worked pretty nicely until said bug bit me. Need to try to the new Druid and Barbarian classes out. Shapeshifters are always fun...

I'm also deep into Elden Ring. I'm a Dark Souls fan and this is a natural go-to for me. Only knock I have against it is the same one against the DS series -- the story is so pretentious. I was really hoping that with George R.R. Martin writing the story for Elden Ring it would make some sense. But nope! Still, game is great.

@diamond.g Really enjoyed Outer Worlds. How's Hellblade coming? I put it down after getting super frustrated at a fight that I later found out there's no way to win...

I found the beginning to be somewhat stressful. Then I realized that the mirror thing freezes enemies and made handling large crowds easier.
The puzzles feel slow paced cause she doesn’t run that fast, lol.

May 2022-
  • X4: Foundations- I’ll say I’m struggling with this trying to get it into gear. The problem is imo that Egosoft expects to have dedicated players willing to figure it all out (or most of it) on their own. Every other move I make in this game is to pause the game while I search online for info, how to…
  • World of Tanks- Said I’d never play this again, but got invited by my son so we have been teaming up. Sometimes I can make a difference, but getting that old, gee I’m a terrible player feeling. ? My best scenario is to be in a fast tank, let the battle develop and then act as a wild card, inserting myself into a duel in progress, tipping the balance in my team’s favor. The biggest critique I have of this game is that it is completely arcade compared to what I would describe as real tank combat. No I never drove a tank, but I think it is realistic to say that real tanks are not the hot rods they are in this game, and I don’t think Peak Around the Rock, trading shots is an actual thing in real tank battles. ?
  • World of Warships- I’m a competent player here, surrounded by incompetence, and invisible destroyers with giant torpedo volleys. :)
  • Foundation- Medieval town builder, has potential but I’ve ignored it lately.
  • Space Crew- Not a bad game as a casual endeavor.

I picked up Outer Worlds coming off of my Fallout 4 obsession and it just did not grab me. I think I was suffering F4 withdrawal. ?

Combat Evolved: Spartan Edition

Really well polished and great fun to play :) Close to 200 maps including the original campaign, Firefight & Multiplayer. Combat Evolved really pops on the screen thx to the dev's dedication to updating this HALO release in every aspect

Comes well recommended for those that enjoy Combat Evolved and want a lot more of the same. One not to be missed. Game's free so give it a spin as these older titles live on their gameplay, not the eye candy which will alwaye age...

Still very much with Radiophobia 3

So far Radiophobia 3 is the best Shadow of Chernobyl (SOC) full mod storyline game for me. Really good for a beta release. Great job of balancing the graphics, it's a significant upgrade on stock SOC and many other full mod S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games.

Most atmospheric yet, with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. being definitively one of the most atmospheric games ever produced. A strong start, impressed
1652732345873.png

You can almost feel the rain & wind LOL
1652732408331.png

Lighting is spot on as is the sound design, stopping to watch & listen to the rotating beacon you can see the detail work put in by the dev team ???
1652732430394.png

Colour is utilised really well, nor is the game the typical drab presentation as the weather in Radiophobia 3 is fairly realistic.
1652732474147.png

New textures really pop in this one, just looks good all round and well balanced so the HD actor models fit well into the environment.
1652732490654.png

Superb  game really works your nerves. Draws you ever deeper into this twisted world of horror, lies & survival ...
1652732513927.png

As promised a bright & sunny day in the Zone LOL
1652732550442.png

Well until we reached Yantar...
1652732574961.png

Radiophobia 3 is still in beta and therefore some issues may be encountered. Personally stability was an issue with DX11, switching to DX10 helped a lot. So far I've had no dead end quests or CTD other than renderer related.

Is also worth being mindful that Radiophobia 3 is aimed at experienced players with the default difficulty being Veteran, the game will challenge you on multiple levels. I really like the updated AI as it's now a force to be reckoned with :) You have to be cautious, yet also must be willing to take the risk to take the win as tactics matter. Firefights are visceral for a single player game and can be a real knife fight at times.

For those seeking a more vanilla Shadow of Chernobyl mod experience with updated graphics Autumn Aurora 2.1 is the way to go. Little is changed outside of the graphics, although I do add a small mod to diversify the autumn colours for the foliage & grasses etc. Sandbox games look to Anomaly or for the challenge Escape from Pripyat.

Worst thing you'll ever hear in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? The click of a dry weapon, you'll be lost to the Zone LOL...
