It works even on Tiger client, I just got to test it there.
Caveat: supported audio formats are not as extensive as your ffplay, I did identify a video in my collection that played audio with ffplay, but not with mplayer 1.5. But for most things it played audio no problem

Mac OS X Server 10.4 - Macintosh Garden

Macintosh Server software 10.4 (Tiger) This is the first release of Tiger Server. Like public version, it comes in DVD or CD forms. Intel based Macs are only compatibles with the version 10.4.7 (6th DL above from the top of the list).

I forget which download for Tiger server on that page, but it was one of those. Tiger server universal has pretty minimal benefits over Tiger client, having used both on different machines for a few months.
There was a runtime crash in Chatty on client that didn't happen in server. Server seems to have modestly better gl support. Other things (like getting classic working) are more of a pain. And the sleep control panel doesn't work correctly, though forcing sleep by closing the lid is good enough for me. YMMV, but imo client should be the primary reference system, especially since server universal is G4/G5/Intel only.

Ok, sounds like the 256s are not compatible. This is what the service manual for your machine says about RAM. Note how the slots should be filled etc.

One last thing until my Early 2005 PowerMac G5 is maxed (GPU). Now this was the G5 expierence I was promised 3000 6 years ago (when I joined here).

Seriously though, YouTube 1080p/30 no problem with PPCMC7.2.7 and PowerVLC 1.2.0 G5 edition. And even web browsing via PowerFox to get urls

Going from a Mac mini G4 1.33ghz 512MB to a dual 2GHZ G5 4GBs of RAM for compiling software is night and day, it's in the same league as my 2GHZ dual xeon dual core 2GHZ 12GBs of RAM. I wonder what would happen if I only let the Mac Pro use 2 make jobs to build apple-gcc-42 (to further even the odds, as they are clocked the same).

Thanks... The things that interests me about server is:
* Intel support for all machines officially.
* PPC64 is available on server only (I think this is the perfect excuse to eventually buy another (this time 2.3ghz dual core) G5 @barracuda156 )
* The network management stuff kind of interests me too with my setup

I today recapped my Quicksilver AcBel 344W PSU. But no joy. It tries to start but only manages to move the PSU fan slightly. No output whatsoever. I measured all suspect resistors and diodes I could see and they seemed ok. So, the problem is somewhere deep in it and I will pretty much give up for now. Well, long time and now finally an update. I haven't been able to resurrect the original PSU but will keep trying again some day.

And I originally bought the wrong ATX-cable (24-20 pin) and now got the correct one ie. 20-24. Started to make the conversion harness which is generally easy but there is one thing that is unclear to me. I am following the ATXG4 instructions.

About the Power OK -line (grey wire) he says:
You'll need to connect the +3.3v line to the Power OK line and insert these back into the harness.

Does this mean I splice the +3.3v line into the POK -wire? In other stuff he uses the word splice but in this occasion "connect".

His pic is not 100% clear on this either. I have made it bigger and brighter to see better. It is clear that the 3.3v orange line goes into the shrink tube and grey comes out but I am not sure if the POK-line (grey wire) is still connected at the ATX PSU end ie. left? Is there actually a Y-splice inside the tube?

As the Quicksilver does not have a POK line I am not clear if the purpose of the splice would be to connect to the POK line to take 3.3v back to the PSU which then knows to work? If yes then it should be spliced.

I know the QS expects to see +3.3v in that connector so that explains QS end.

Installed TheSims2 and all the expansions, time will tell if it runs like a slug on my powerbook 1.5ghz, but it's going to be fun actually doing some gaming. As I mostly use my laptop for distraction free writing.

I also setup Pantheon, so now I can use gemini to help me when I'm writing and trying to either overcome writers block or rewrite something that I've been chewing on for 20 minutes and need a second opinion. I still can't believe I have AI on my G4 lol
 
I've finally setup the "new" PowerMac G4 AGP (400MHz, 1.5GB RAM, ATI Rage 128) that i got 2 weeks ago locally for 70€ (in a lot that included a 21-inch iMac G4 and an original iMac G3 Bondi Blue).

I've exchanged the old and noisy HDDs with a Maxtor 80GB HDD that is a lot quieter.

I've tried installing OS X and OS 9 from CD, but it seems that its going out and corrupting while installing, so i have decided to install OS 9 from the USB Boot Kit and then OS X 10.2 using Target Disk Mode using my Japanese iBook G3.

Time to install some updates (and software!)
 
Other than the G4 AGP, I've finally re-installed my G4 MDD as my main PowerPC Mac.
It's the Dual 1GHz model, maxed out at 2GB RAM with a 256GB Seagate SSD, i also replaced the infamous fans with Noctua a few years ago. It is connected via DVI to HDMI to one of my Dell P2425H.

I've rsync'd my MacPorts installation from my PowerBook G4 to the MDD and it works just fine, time to tweak WindowMaker and X11 a bit. 😉

first of all sorry to hijack this thread, I've been looking for a good way to contact you but haven't found anything, anyhow I was wondering if you had any Roots or any backups of sources that aren't archived from the Apple CVS? most of that stuff is missing from the WayBack Machine and Apple never uploaded some old projects from the CVS when they brought over repos to GitHub.

Also here's my public cry(screaming into the void I know) that someone working at Apple push out the source for darwinbuild-257 or a newer internal release publicly. PLEASE.

For 10.6 those are useless, since nothing was built for ppc. For 10.4-10.5 some are available, I guess. I had a partial clone somewhere. I know who had the whole thing (i.e. what was public, not something internal), I could ask about it perhaps, whether it still exists.

I picked some Roots for Leopard by just looking at many different checkpoints at various times:


but yeah darwinbuild for snow leo, while fixed by @barracuda156 does not work with those roots on ppc machine (it may work on intel, where more of xcode and chrooting works).

I have thread here with some more notes on Darwinbuild for Darwin 9 (Leo).
 
Trying to fix building gcc16 on G5 tiger, I'm over half a day into this build which is good news.

While I wait I'm playing 1080p YouTube on the MacPro next to it, and that MacPro is also building some tigerports stuff for testing in the background, monitored by an ssh connection to my macbook air. The amount of stuff you can accomplish simultaneously with multiple machines going at once 🙂 R.I.P. my electric bill.
