But, no effect on the ssd. Still the same performance.
Acording to Light Ridge's specs, connecting two or more devices to it downgrades all of them to x1. The box includes a PCIe switch which may prevent this.

Yeah, lets hope the card works. I'll report back when it arrives.
I found a manual for the box which mentions both TB1 and TB2 interface cards. It also mentions a jumper (page 15) to adjust the fan speed.

It is weird that they have marked the PCIe slots x2, x4 and x8 if the controller can only support x4.

Ah, after reading the user manual you found (thanks for that) I rechecked and found that I remembered PCIe-slots totally wrong. It indeed has x4, x4/8, x8 slots and another x8 slot for the controller card, like the manual says.

I need to take a look at that speed jumper.... And I looked, mine is located on the female side of the connector deep inside the case. Probably in later revision they moved it to the more easily accessible spot on the fan connector itself.

While I took the fan out hot I noticed that fan noise didn't change at all - the Noctua NF-A8 I installed is totally silent in default speed setting. So, no need to adjust the speed. The remaining fan sound comes from the psu fan. Before installing the Noctua it was combination of both fans.

Perhaps this explains why the Lycom card, which also contains a PCIe switch, doesn't work. Is daisy-chaining PCIe switches possible @joevt?
Then there is the issue mentioned in the user manual: Thunderbolt Aware driver needed for the PCI-cards. Most "stupid" cards probably work with drivers in MacOS but the Lycom card is different and the std drivers might not support it. But...it works in the cMP without any user installed drivers and when installed to the TB box it does not appear in the PCI listing - so we probably never even get to the driver load stage due the issue you mention?

I concur you are not getting to the stage where drivers come into play -- and a PCIe switch shouldn't need them.

Another, just slightly related line of thought: even a TB3/TB4 controller provides only four PCIe 3.0 lanes to devices. The switch in the Magma is PCIe 2.0, so even with a TB3 card the SSD would probably top out at about 1500-1600 MB/s (I've gotten around 760 MB/s from PCIe 2.0 ×2).

A PCIe gen 2 x8 slot with PCIe gen 2 x4 upstream can allow a PCIe gen 1 x8 card to work at full speed.

Acording to Light Ridge's specs, connecting two or more devices to it downgrades all of them to x1. The box includes a PCIe switch which may prevent this.
Alpine Ridge has built in support for x4, x2x2, x2x1x1, x1x1x1x1.
You're saying that Light Ridge supports either x4 or x1x1x1x1.
A Thunderbolt PCIe expansion chassis with multiple slots that are not x1x1x1x1 definitely has a separate PCIe switch other than the PCIe switch built into the Thunderbolt controller.

Perhaps this explains why the Lycom card, which also contains a PCIe switch, doesn't work. In the manual, the Magma's switch is shown with a PCI ID of 111d:806e which leads to this one. Is daisy-chaining PCIe switches possible @joevt?
Yes, PCIe switches are daisy chainable. You see in the manual the lycom switches are hilighted (1 upstream and 2 downstream). The parent of that switch is the Thunderbolt downstream bridge. The parent of that is the Thunderbolt upstream bridge. The parent of that is the host Thunderbolt controller's downstream bridge. The parent of that is the host Thunderbolt controller's upstream bridge. The parent of that is the host's root port. PCIe bridges have an upstream and downstream side because they can have different link rate and link widths.

Then there is the issue mentioned in the user manual: Thunderbolt Aware driver needed for the PCI-cards. Most "stupid" cards probably work with drivers in MacOS but the Lycom card is different and the std drivers might not support it. You may need to add a property IOPCITunnelCompatible to the kext's Info.plist to make it usable from Thunderbolt.

I'll read your links and see if I can figure how to do that. 😉

But...which kext we are talking about? IOPCIFamily.kext? IONVMeFamily.kext seems to have something along those lines too?

Even without a PCIe switch that converts 1.0×8 to 2.0×4? I didn't know that. Would a 2.0×8 switch connect to a TB3 controller (3.0×4) at full speed?
A PCIe gen 2 x8 slot with PCIe gen 2 x4 upstream means there's a PCIe bridge (a.k.a. PCIe switch) with a PCIe gen 2 x4 upstream and a downstream for a slot that is PCIe gen 2 x8.

I was wrong.

Apparently, QuarkXPress 2026 DOES run on Intel Macs. I assumed that anything 2024 and above was Apple Silicon only. That's what I get for assuming!

I have a bunch of documents that started life in the mid-1990s as Microsoft Works files that eventually got converted to Word, that eventually got imported to QuarkXPress 4 and ultimately converted to version 6 in the mid-00s. Some time around 2011, I personally converted to InDesign. Problem was that these old files were still in version 6 of QuarkXPress.

I have QuarkXPress 8 and Markztools which can convert back to version 4 of QuarkXPress. That's necessary because all versions of InDesign are only able to open version 4 of QuarkXPress. Any higher and you cannot open it. But, it seems that my old Quad G5 is the only Mac that will run QuarkXPress 8! And I no longer have that Mac, only the very last backup of the drive before I fully converted to my Mac Pro.

However, sometime around 2022, QuarkXPress gained the ability to export IDML files. So, I installed QuarkXPress 2026 on my Mac Pro, which Google told me would run on Intel Macs. And…yes it does!

Now the problem is that newer versions of QuarkXPress cannot open anything older than version 8! Fortunately, Quark has a converter that was already installed on my 2011 MacBook Air.

So…use the converter to get these old version 6 files to version 9 (because that is the version the converter exports at), open these files in QuarkXPress 2026, export as IDML and finally open the IDML files in InDesign CC24 (which is what I am using) and save as a CC24 INDD file.

Now, I have these old files as ID files I can open and get content out of.

All because Markzware's QXPMarkz is $319 or so!

Had to change up my OS configuration again on my 2012 MBP. The TV app in Sequioa was doing this weird thing where if I clicked on one of the icons for a TV show in my library, the app would crash. This did not happen with every TV show only some of them. While I don't really buy TV shows or movies from iTunes anymore, the fact that half of my old purchases can't be played on my Mac because the app will crash, is not acceptable. So, once again I left the world of OCLP for a macOS that can officially run on here. After going back and forth between Mojave and Catalina, I settled on Catalina. While I prefer the iTunes UI, I noticed some issues with the store, namely on the TV side of things. Seasons that are visible on the TV app store on my iPhone/Catalina are either difficult to find or non-existent on the iTunes Store (I noticed this on both Mojave and on the latest version of iTunes for Windows). It's so strange to see Catalina get a new version number and a 2026 copyright date.

Going to Catalina instead of Mojave of course means not having Office 2008. To make up for this I installed the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack on my Windows XP VM in VirtualBox. Despite not officially supporting Office 97, I was able to succesfully convert a DOCX file and save a copy of it as a .doc file. The MOCP was hard to find though since Microsoft loves to randomly remove its older software. I eventually found a copy by copying a link from some college's website and putting it into the Wayback Machine ("FileFormatConverters.exe" is the file name for the MOCP).

One thing I missed from Sequioa was using Stacher. Stacher 7 doesn't run on anything older than Monterey (keeping in line with Chrome's minimum OS requirements). However, I still had a copy of Stacher 6 from 2024 and much like PPCMC 6, all I had to do to get it working again was replace youtube-dl with yt-dlp (renaming the yt-dlp binary to youtube-dl) and update Python.

One thing I missed from Mojave was iTunes' internet radio. I tired Windows 7 and 10 in VirtualBox, but both attempts were unsuccesful. Windows 7's last iTunes worked fine, but W7 couldn't be activated due to me having previously activated my copy of Windows 7 in VMWare. Windows 10's iTunes had audio issues. I tried Windows XP's last iTunes in my XP VM, but it seems that it can't connect to the server anymore and unlike old Mac versions, there's no patch to fix it. Remembering that the classic Mac OS versions of iTunes had been patched, I ended up downloading Sheepshaver and making a Mac OS 9.0.4 setup with a patched version of iTunes 1. Internet radio plays flawlessly. I can browse the web on Firefox while Sheepshaver plays internet radio in the background.

Only issue I have left in Catalina is Discord voice chat. I can't use the Discord client because it doesn't support Catalina anymore, so I am using the browser version via Firefox. Every time I try to join voice, I keep getting bounced back between the "authenticating" message and the "disconnected" message despite giving Firefox permission to use my headset mic.

The awesome @Jazzzny has a patcher of sorts for patching the Discord Client on 10.9 onwards, maybe give that a try?

EDIT: The latest Catalina compatible version of Discord can be downloaded directly from them here. Hope this helps.

On my Late 2013 iMac I decided I wanted to replay the first two Batman Arkham games... via Steam! I managed to get Steam to launch and stay put on Mojave (I use Mojave for the 32-bit support, as Arkham Asylum is a 32-bit game while Arkham City is 64-bit) by following this handy tutorial.

It took a bit of trial and error, but I've managed to download and play my games just fine without the Steam client attempting to update or close, depite the warning banner displaying the contrary. Now to download some of my other 32-bit Mac Games from Steam, such as Portal and Portal 2. Mojave/Intel continues to be the gift that keeps on giving!

I went from Mojave to Sonoma on my Mac Pro (via OCLP) in October 2024. At the time I decided that I would upgrade to Sequoia when Apple released Tahoe. Hasn't worked out that way.

When Tahoe hit, OCLP announced that it was not supported yet. I waited until OCLP would support Tahoe before moving to Sequoia. I figured any other bugs would be worked out in Sequoia by that time. That hasn't happened yet and as of right now, Tahoe is still unsupported by OCLP.

In the mean time I've been paying attention to what others on Sequoia have said on the OCLP subreddit. It has not been a winning endorsement for OCLP/Sequoia. Another part of my issue is that of my three video cards, one is PC only. When I upgrade and reapply root patches that card has to be pulled. I can reinstall it once root patches are complete. But, this is a pain. And based on what I'm hearing about Sequoia, it's not an effort I feel like undertaking.

So, until something changes with OCLP, I'm sitting still on Sonoma. That's fine, because other than a few minor irritants, I'm not having any issues. For me, Sonoma tends to have the WindowServer process grab more and more ram over time. By a day and a half of use, this causes my MP to forget that it has two ethernet ports. Apps run slow as well and with internet and the network out I can't do much. I am forced to restart.

So, I nuked the problem. I have a cronjob that force shuts down the Mac at 4:10am every morning and Onyx is scheduled to start the Mac at 4:15am. This is all done while I'm sleeping. For me then, I see no difference - the Mac is essentially still on 24/7 as I wish. But the problem is rectified every morning. I don't know if anyone else experiences this, but it's really the only issue I have with OCLP.

Finally…iTunes and the radio. I've mentioned this a few times, but I will mention it again. You can still play radio streams directly, even if you cannot browse to them. All you need to do is get the stream URL or PLS file and drop that into iTunes. iTunes will play it directly and it becomes a part of your library.

If I were to be using OS9 and iTunes though, I would install iTunes 4.0. That, as I have also mentioned in the past, is the ONLY version of iTunes that will let you stream your iTunes library across the internet. So, for instance, if you had a Mac at home and at work that both had iTunes 4.0 installed, you could stream your library at home to your Mac at work. 4.0 remains the only version that can do this as Apple stripped the functionality out with the 4.0.1 update.

Thanks for the reminder about that project. I just tried out that patcher and it worked! Successfully able to do VC now.

I installed the Highlands mod by st1ngler and others, for TrackMania United Forever recently, and, to my shock, an issue i had with running the game through Wine was surprisingly gone! I seriously don't know how. It's the same version of Wine, and the mod only ADDED files, not replaced anything, but somehow, engine sounds and sound effects are back! I won't have to use a custom skin to listen to car sounds while i play anymore! 😀

Yeah, it's definitely not ideal. Jumping through these kind of hoops should not be necessary to play games we "own" but time and tech marches on and we will be left behind eventually I guess.
I mostly use GOG or my PS5 Pro for games these days but my Steam library has a few gems I often miss. 🙂
