Reviving this old thread....

1: Better GPU's. THe current ones are quite bad for gaming. Gimme AMD's 7000 series with support for Direct X 11. (most games use this)

2: Faster CPU's. I don't have the latest iMac so i don't know just how fast it is, but this is a wishlist. So i guess i can go ahead and request a hexacore card as stock with maybe a octocore option.

3: Better 1080p camera. Also built in flash. And good low light performance. This would be great for Skype and screen casting.

4: Retina with maybe 3k res

5: Matte screen.

6: Changed screen options. e.g, get rid of the weird 21.5 and 27 inch and bring back the great 20 to 24 inch displays. With a top of the line 30 inch option.

1: actually they are quite good (6970m), playing 99 % of the games at full resolution and details (except maybe metro 2033 and crysis 2, bf3 at 15-20 fps). current amds (hd6000) already support directx 11, hd7000 will support direct x 11.1, the only question is when do they come out?

2: ivy bridge, with built in usb3 support (which means apple will definitely offer usb3), expect 20 percent increase in cpu power with decrease in power consumption (95w to 77w) which is pretty much so we may see maybe better gpu (hd7990, crossfire, sli?) or different design (no chin?)

3: definitely no built in flash, they use the screen itself to lighten the photos; in video mode, would it make sense if there was a light shining right in your face all the time?

4: lion isnt resolution independent, apple could only use HiDPI mode, but in that case they would need to double the resolution (5120x2880?) that would be great but probably unlikely...

5: not a chance

6: possibly

im waiting for the new ones to come out, according to the buyer's guide, they are near the end of the cycle, the only thing is that ivy bridge doesn't come out until april (that would be 320-350 days since last refresh, avarage 273) so there are three options for apple: first, update imac without ivy bridge (maybe some kind of redesign with ati hd7000); second, wait for the ivy bridge; and third, bribe intel and get ivy bridge early :)

so whats it gonna be, apple?
im hoping for the third option :D

Im a little bit computer illiterate here thinking of buying an iMac but also thinking of just waiting for next gen.

I see lots of mention of this Ivy Bridge, can someone explain what this IB does would be better etc than what the current one does?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_Bridge_(computer_processor)

Ivy Bridge feature improvements from Sandy Bridge were expected to include:
  • Tri-gate transistor technology (less than 50% power consumption at the same performance level as 2-D planar transistors).
  • PCI Express 3.0 support.
  • Max CPU multiplier of 63 (57 for Sandy Bridge).
  • RAM support up to 2800MT/s in 200MHz increments.
  • Intel HD Graphics with DirectX 11, OpenGL 3.1, and OpenCL 1.1 support.
  • The built-in GPU is believed to have up to 16 execution units (EUs), compared to Sandy Bridge's maximum of 12.
  • The new random number generator and the RdRand instruction, which is codenamed Bull Mountain.
  • Intel Quick Sync Video.
  • DDR3L low voltage for mobile processors.
  • Multiple 4k video playback.
Thermal design power (TDP), according to a October 2011 leaked Intel roadmap, will come in 77/65/55/45/35W options for desktop processors, while Intel says that mobile processors will use variable TDP (for example TDP of 15W, which automatically rises to 35W when the laptop is plugged into a docking bay; with a corresponding rise in performance).

Performance

Intel's performance targets (compared to Sandy Bridge):
Up to 20% increase in CPU performance.
Up to 30% increase in integrated GPU performance.

Around 20 percent gain in cpu tasks and lower power consumption (regarding imac, 95 watts to 77 watts) which means less heat so apple could put better gpu in it, but only maybe

1: But they are mobile. iv'e seen some some videos showing the graphics performance, gets about 30 to 40 fps with high end graphics card. Which isn't bad at all but for FPS's it could be better. Also, you probably know this but the 6970 on the imac is mobile not full desktop like the mac pros. Yes i realize that AMD's graphics cards support direct x 11, but i don't think apple does so the graphics aren't getting used to their full potential. Kinda like retina apps for IP4 and and iphone 4/4s. Devs need to push out code to support the retina, it doesn't just get supported out of the blue.

2: ivy bridge will get about 20 to 30 % increase in speed over Sandy. Not that big. Doubt we will see AMD's 7990 even with ivy, Apple does not support full graphics cards as i said. But who knows? I maybe be wrong. I sure hope so. BTW, i love the chin on my '09 (early) iMac. Why does everyone hate it? I could see the point in getting rid of it though if apple brings out a 30 inch screen, make the screen bigger, keep same form factor.

3: Well, i guess this was a stupid idea maybe a weak flash? :)

4: Still would be nice for reading text.

5: It's possible. Didn't the MBP get anti glare after consumers begged and went down on their knees for it? Apple will give in, eventually. (circa 5 years) But it will probably cost at least 100$ at first. I know you can just buy a anti glare screen for well under 50$ but then you have the annoyance of installing and even if you do it right there still is the possibility of bubbles. I actually tried to install one from radtech i think and it didn't go well. Had to take it off because of the bubbles

I see so it doesn't seem like anything truly groundbreaking that will change. How about as far as like a thinner design or better resolution (not sure what current is or how it works) but are any of these things possible?

Also another question, if the graphics chip or whatever are better does that only benefit gaming, or would it effect normal web browsing or running say Garage Band? Sorry if dumb questions just trying to consider everything before I go ahead and purchase.

  1. Larger SSD (600GB) and HDD (3TB) options.
  2. Built in caching software that treats both SSD and HDD as a single volume, and continously migrates MOU data to the SSD.

I don't think you understand the reasoning for why certain standards exist. Displays sizes are influenced by various things. With the 27", they can cram a lot into the back of it. 27" display panels replaced the 25.5" panels. Before 25.5" was a big step up in price from 24". With 27", it's a noticeable step up in size. Why would you care about about 20 vs 21"? There's no practical reason to use 20". In the aspect ratios chosen by Apple, 21.5" allows for the use of a 1080 panel. That's why they use it. Generic 1080 panel with chosen screen coating. You're worrying over nothing.

3k res doesn't exist in any part they can source. You're just quoting things that you think might be cool, no matter how illogical. Laptop displays may have increased dramatically in resolution. The push and margins haven't been there in desktop displays. You simply need a better understanding of what is available for Apple to use. They won't go with fully custom parts, as it makes no sense.

Macs aren't really focused on gaming. There are a lot of people who game on macs, but I'm guessing it's a small enough subset that Apple doesn't really care.

Well for heavens sake maybe i am just suggesting over the top hardware but there's no need to bash me for it. I am merely speculating anyway, DREAMING ok? A wishlist. Most of what i posted won't even happen anyway. The problem with apple is that they aren't about options, you have to buy a PC for that. But I'd rather keep my Mac and game on it with its small selection of games than buy a PC.

Someone is going to quote just this and say you have answered your own question. Well i haven't.

I have Windows 7 running on parallels and its works for games but its a bit slow, stutters a lot with games so a better video card might come into play here. Also of course, you can't use all of cpu in parallels but even splitting it fifty-fifty with Lion doesn't do anything really.

As for Bootcamp, i hear it's pretty good for gaming but i guess i'll stick with what i got because i don't want to boot into windows every time to play a game.

Blek I do come off that way sometimes don't I? I think it's just from reading all the retina threads. As soon as the iphone got it, it seemed like predictions started about it coming to imacs the following year when desktop panels have fallen behind laptops in dpi, and laptops have fallen below phones. I'm sorry. I should probably proof-read before I post.

I don't actually understand what is better about 20" than 21.5. If I recall correctly that was just a change from 16:10 to 16:9 or the aspect ratio change was. Apple just kind of goes with the trends. Also if they used a 24" panel, they'd probably have a difficult time getting their current price points.

Anyway I've hated the design direction of the imac for years. So many people buy it simply because Apple artificially inflated the mac pro beyond what they wish to spend.

Oh, that's quite all right. I guess was just getting over sensitive.
The problem I see with the current lineup is the huge gap between the 21.5 and 27 inch having a 5.5 inch increase is a big jump, heck it's even a big jump from the 24 inch. I've seen the iMacs at the apple store earlier in the year (before the 2011
update) the 27 inch is quite big, it wouldn't fit too comfy on my
desk.

How is a 21.5 inch screen popular? Or even a 27? I guess I'm 2 years behind the times...

i'd like it to be easier to replace the internal hard drive - as that seems the biggest single point of failure.

They do that and I'll buy one... otherwise I'm still hmmming.

My thoughts on what I've read so far.

Ivy Bridge - Very likely, I don't see them releasing a new iMac before the Ivy Bridge processors become available. My estimated release is at March 2012, so before the current predicted retail availability.

Redesign - There's every possibility it will be redesigned looking at the timeline and the cinema displays, however I have no problems with the current design.

Touch Screen - I wouldn't rule this out. Something interesting is going to happen this year with Lion implementing Launch Pad. A lot of people immediately rule this out saying "my arms will ache!" and with the Apple design mantra I have to agree that it won't be added in that form. However, Apple are well known for changing the way we do things, so what makes people think you'll be touching a vertically mounted screen? Why not a screen which can be rotated down for touch screen use? Or something you or I haven't thought of yet.

User replaceable hard drive - Very unlikely, we've just seen apple add a proprietary connection in the recent iMac models, why would they then remove that and go through the design compromises necessary to make it user changeable?

SSD option changes - I certainly hope so. A single 256GB SSD option is both restricting and over priced. SSDs are the future and Apple know that.

GPUs - Frankly, I'm not fussed. I use some photo mastering software but nothing an i7 won't take in it's stride. I don't buy an iMac for gaming, a decision I see repeated on this forums time and time again!

Screen - I don't see a retina display coming because as far as I'm aware those kinds of resolutions aren't possible at the sizes we are looking at. As long as a 24"+ option remains, I'll be happy.

Blu-Ray - I've had several rants about the lack of Blu Ray on the Mac lines. I don't see it happening although it's one of the things that continues to frustrate me. Obviously they are looking after their own interests (namely iTunes) but at my expense.

Whatever happens I've got money burning a hole for a new iMac, so hurry up!

:apple:

apple (mac os x) doesnt support direct x (thats microsoft) they support opengl, so if you wanna use their full potential use bootcamp (windows games are more optimized, and there are more of them)

2: i dont care for the redesign either, it already looks great. the big deal is power consumption, so apple can cram more things inside, and theyll probably use those extra watts for more powerful gpu (but only mobile)

about the antiglare screen, the thing is that glass covers both bezel and the screen, and if they wanted to make the antiglare screen, bezel and the screen wouldnt be covered with the same material and that would not look good on imac, on macbook pro it looks good, but imagine that on imac

i hope for the more advanced antiglare coating on glass surface, for example i have xerox 19 inch and it is covered with glass too, but it doesnt reflect, when you look at the source of the light it has very dark purple hue to it and when the monitor is on you just cant see it, why apple cant do smth like that

there are no dumb questions ;) at least in my world..

well, with those new cpus the power consumption will decline which leaves room for either thinner design or more powerful components inside so we'll see, it depends on apple.. as for higher resolution, thats unlikely (only if they go retina which means double the resolution, but i dont think those displays even exist yet) because if you increase the resolution, all the graphical user interface elements (buttons, words etc etc) become too small... in imacs they could up it a bit because gui isnt too small like on macbook pro 17 but i think they're waiting or retina...

99 percent benefit in gaming, and some professional tools, but not browsing and garage band

i definitely agree and hope you're right, especially about march ;) can't wait

A wireless keyboard with a numeric keypad.

your so easily pleased compared to the other posters here :D ;)

- Size - would like to see the 24" being brought back considering that a 21" is too small nowadays and a 27" will be too large for a computer screen when it is at arms-length away.

- Processor - Would like to see an upgrade in the processor, massively. bring in ivy-bridge or the newly-released hex-core (and soon) the new quad-core sandy bridge E processors by intel

- Graphics - could add 1GB graphics across ALL models, with maybe the top-end model including a 2 GB graphics with build-to-order options up to 3 GB, considering that PC/mac gaming nowadays requires more graphic card memory nowadays. And also for those mac gamers within us :D

[B- ]Ram[/B] - apple should add 6 GB of ram to the 27-inch models and the highest-end 21.5-inch model as standard in the next refresh.

- Price - would like to see the same price on the imac - $1199/£999 for the lowest end and $1999/£1649 for the highest end of the range. (do correct me if im wrong about the price :apple:) and maybe lower the price a bit for the build-to-order RAM. nobody would pay £160 for 4 extra GB's of RAM (unless you are/feel rich :D) compared to £80 at the most at most aftermarket online-retailers

and that is pretty much all i want from the next refresh of the imac, and if there is one thing i would really want in the next refresh of the imac is that apple bring back the 24" models and keep the 21.5" and the 27" models.

They might if they would get over this whole thin business :D. Yeah, from what i hear apple doesn't even support Opengl 4.0, they are still using 2.0. If they did support direct x that would be awesome. I'm no dev, but wouldn't it make porting pc games easier to mac? We might eventually see a wider variety of games for Mac if this happened.

actually, lion support opengl 3.2 ;)

directx is owned by microsoft so i dont see that happening :)

Everyone wishes for major changes, but they never occur. I expect:

  • The latest processors (no increase in total power consumption, though)
  • More recent but not top-of-the-line graphics
  • Possibly some cost shifting in disk drives favoring SSDs because of availability problems with HDDs.
  • USB3 because the new Intel chips support it
  • "Superdrive" may be gone
  • If housing changes, it will be thinner and "jaw" will be smaller. Nothing will be moved to the front or side (from the rear) so as not to spoil the lines
  • New Magic Keyboard which combines existing wireless keyboard with Magic Trackpad into one device.
  • No increase in basic RAM. No change in standard configuration price points.

More RAM by default (12 GB?), SSD that comes standard (at least 128 GB), more speed, more USB ports. (2 more)

I appreciate the responses to my questions, one more thing im wondering.

Will Ivy in comparison to Sandy -- show speed increases in things like normal internet browsing or running Garage Band (1-2 programs etc)?

Or will the speed increases be so small its hardly noticeable and moreover noticeable only when running multiple applications?

i like the idea of the magic keyboard
