what iphone would you say was the best iphone ever released?

Okay, here we go:

X: truly the biggest jump in technology since the original iPhone, and it’s a a thing of beauty.
5s: this took the jewel-like look of the 5 to new heights, with Touch ID and the gold option.
SE: has all the style of a 5s w/ even better internals, but it lost the diamond chamfered edges of the 5s.
5: the silver and slate options were gorgeous and the aluminum and glass paring was ornate and insanely light.
4S: the stunning look of the 4 with the addition of Siri and lack of antennagate.
4: Steve was 100% correct, it looked like a beautiful old Lecia camera, plus FaceTime and Retina Display.
8/Plus: the final evolution of the 6 design and the “bezled era” of iPhone. Like and 7 and a 4 had a child.
7/Plus: like the 5 was to the 4, iterative enough to look different, and quite beautiful (especially Jet Black).
iPhone: it started it all and you could tell  put so much work and care into it. It felt amazing to hold and use.
6/Plus: the one that took us into the world of big screens. Smooth, ultra thin & harkenend back to the original.
6s/Plus: 7000 series aluminum, 3D Touch, and Rose Gold, plus the cameras were improved vastly.
5c: the time  took a chance and had iPod-like colors on an iPhone. Basically a plastic 5, but fun nevertheless.
3G: better cell speeds and the first iPhone built for a world of apps. Squat, plastic build quality was a turnoff.
3GS: essentially a 3G with video, GPS, and speed improvements, also game vice control (primitive Siri).

None of those models were ever a let down. I had most of them, and always loved them. I can’t wait to see what the iPhone X is like in person, and what  has planned going forward.

Best of what - design? new Tech? specs?

Design - 4\4s followed by 5\5s\SE.
New tech - 5s.
Specs - SE.
 
I’ve had every one since the first iPhone and so far, the 7+ in Matte Black. Love the color and performance. Amazing.

I’m sure that will change on 11/03, haha!! Can’t wait for the X.
 
I loved my black/slate iPhone 5. But I wasn’t a fan of the dings it had right out of the box. Scuffgate I think they called it?
 
Sorry, but I'm going with the IP8. Every new model has had a little more "pop" and IMHO, my 8 blows my former 7 away. On appearance along, I have no problem with the IP5/S. I sold my 7 about 3 weeks before the 8 arrived and in that brief time period, I used my backup IP5S. Couldn't believe how SLOOOOWWW it was compared to my old 7.
 
My personal favourites:

3G-my first iPhone and smartphone
4- I liked the design, new Retina display and it was the best phone of its time imo
6 plus-Because it was the first iPhone phablet.

I don’t have the 8 plus/ X yet to see how they fare.

iphones just went downward from there (bigger, awkward to hold, camera sticking out of the case), truly wish they bring back the 5 form factor in the future
 
In my opinion, as far as design is concerned:
1. iPhone 4 & 4S
2. iPhone X
3. iPhone 8 & 8 Plus
4. iPhone 5 & 5S & SE
5. iPhone 7 & 7 Plus
6. iPhone 2G
7. iPhone 6/6S & 6/6S Plus
8. iPhone 5C
9. iPhone 3G/3GS

That list is solely based on design. I really like the glass and steel design on the 4&4S which is why I am happy that the X is reintroducing something familiar. I have to say it's only the camera bump preventing me putting the X at the top of the list, however my opinion could change when I get my hands on one.

With the X incoming, I've never been so excited for an iPhone. I don't understand the backlash about the notch; personally, I think it's a seamless integration of hardware and software- something many people will claim it's not. Design is subjective though, so of course my opinion will differ to that of others.

6 plus was amazing and 7 plus jet black. 5s too with touch id with new gold color. And finally 8 silver which looks white will all glass body.
 
iPhone 4. It brought the retina display. It was also the first iPhone to use stainless steel. The iPhone X will be the 2nd.

The design was bleeding edge, and can you imagine if Gizmodo hadn't gotten a prototype 4 weeks ahead of launch (and spoiled it), how EPIC the reveal Steve would have put together would have been? The entire DEVICE was 1.5-2 years ahead of the competition. It was still pretty mindblowing even though it had largely been spoiled!

The use of Stainless Steel
The Glass Front/Back
FaceTime (front camera)
A4 Processor (screaming fast for it's time)
The Retina screen
A camera worthy of actual light photography instead of just fun, and it even had a useable flash too!

It was like holding a device legitimately from the future, and it wasn't an exaggeration.

Every release has been "exciting" for one reason or another, but the 4... yeesh... as a geek I know I lost sleep over the excitement, and I can't think of another electronic that that was true for (maybe the original Game Boy, but I was 10 haha...).
 
Almost every iPhone has been good and had good points but it has to be the 4/4S. I don't think Apple has ever been so far ahead of the opposition, it was just simply the best by miles, it had retina screen, it was beautiful, it was fast, it was classic in black and white - sometimes today I still see a white 4S out and about and it remains the best design Apple has put out.

Second place is the 5 in black - beautiful and still modern looking even if the speed is lacking, sadly they got rid of this colour with the 5S.

Third I would give to the 6S for being a proper performance leap.
 
In terms of how it changed the industry, easily the iPhone 4.

The iPhone 4 reinvented what people expect out of a smartphone the same way the original iPhone did. It was the first time we saw high resolution displays, front-facing cameras, "premium" builds using metal and glass, and more accurate sensors like the 6-axis gyroscope on a wide scale, affordable consumer product, and the 4/4s design is probably even more iconic than the original iPhone.

In terms of what my personal favorite iPhone release was, it's easily a tie between the current iPhone 8/8+ and the iPhone 5s.

Ranking them, I'd have to put them in this order, from least influential/most underwhelming to most influential/least underwhelming:

iPhone 3GS
iPhone 5c
iPhone SE
iPhone 4S
iPhone 3G
iPhone 5
iPhone 6/6+
iPhone 6s/6s+
iPhone 7/7+
iPhone 5s
iPhone
iPhone 8/8+
iPhone X
iPhone 4
 
Going with many on this thread re: 4/4S. Well ahead of others, the sexy glass back, thin, 2001 monolith like. And with iOS on 4S, love it or hate it, got iCloud, so no longer had to sync with Mac to keep your contacts, calendars in sync.

Runner up: 3G. Imo, the first real iPhone in that you had 3G networking, iOS rolled out App Store. Yes, a pig when it came to RAM, CPU, but still... First of the iPhones where you had long lines for days after went on sale: everyone wanted this.

Honorable mention: 5/5S/SE and 8. 5 taking that 4 design and putting in a bigger display, but not too big. Felt great in one's hand and easy to use with one hand. 8, going back to the 4 esthetics with the glass backs and color coordinated trim, while getting a big performance boost (I just came off the 6).
 
Definitely 5s space gray. Comfortable form factor, spec bump was huge at that time and the space gray color in combination with matte aluminium back and polished chamfered edges is beautiful. SE is beautiful too, but the matte edges make the phone a bit more dull compared to the 5s.

Well the Pixel is definitely a flagship phone for Google, even if from a hardware perspective it's not up to par with some of the others. The Pixel 2 addressed some of those deficiencies, but no, it wouldn't be my top choice.

It still has a 6" OLED screen running qHD+, QC 3.0, USB-C, a real file system for easy media management, and a camera that by most accounts is the finest on a phone (which will always be subjective, but that's true of all cameras).

Is it head and shoulders above the iPhone X? No, but even the 835 is perfectly capable of running everything flawlessly. Is the A11 superior? Sure. There are a lot of folks that would prefer "dull" and 2017 to a 4 year old 6 with a new glass back or a smaller screen WITH a notch and lower PPI though.

And it has a fingerprint reader vs. the X... if that matters.

If they put iOS into the Pixel 2 and gave people a choice between it and the 8, a lot of people would choose the Pixel 2 hardware just because it's visibly different. Compared to the X it would be much closer, I agree, but a lot of folks hate the notch, and having a bigger and better screen does make it at least a consideration.

And that's just an argument for the LOWER end of the Android flagships (Pixel). When you start getting into Note 8 territory, the hardware starts to separate even more.

Thank goodness for iOS, but Apple is rapidly losing ground (or lost it already). Unless you consider a FaceID camera/dot projector that no one wanted (and nearly everyone would swap TouchID for if given the choice) to really be something to be proud of being "ahead of the competition" on?

In terms of influence and wow factor, no iPhone has ever topped the original.
 
People tend to overestimate the "influence" the original iPhone 2G had. Absolutely it was a marvel of it's time, but it was also hamstrung with EDGE data, no MMS, no AppStore (at least initially), and it was brutally tied to AT&T with ZERO chance of a sanctioned unlock (even if you bought the phone for full price and had it on AT&T for 2 years). It took jailbreaking (and the unlock via jailbreaking) before I was even able to experience one, as no way was I going to AT&T at the time (I eventually did, purely because I was so hooked on the iPhone by then, but I doubt I would have gotten hooked had I not been able to use it on T-Mobile for a year first).

The original is special because it was the first, but it had a TON of flaws that hurt it's influence out of the gate.
