It does suck that the low-end ones don't have the backlit keyboard, but really, I've never found myself in a position where I would need it. But, I know how to type.

Don't see how this is a "deal-breaker".

Exactly...

I touch type at an average 50-60 words a minute, but sometimes I have to hunt for specific keys and functions…

(with education discount):

2.0 GHz with upgrade to 250 GB HD: $1339 (before tax)
2.4 GHz: $1499 (before tax)

So $160 difference for backlit keys and a 0.4 GHz upgrade.

Was the backlit keyboard a deal breaker? I though most people would go with the $1599 MacBook for the extra 400MHz, and that the backlit keyboard was a "nice to have".

I guess the lesson is never buy any new Apple product right away..

New MBP - Faulty graphics chip they don't own up to until months later
New iPhone - sees a huge price drop 1 month later
New MB - Advertised with backlit keyboard, but doesnt really have one.

It took me a while to learn my lesson, but now I'm really over it.

Yeah, I bought an iPhone when it first came out. I learned my lesson too.

I was upgraded from the 2.0 tothe 2.4for free and they shipped it overnight.for me having the backlight is a must with black keys, I have bad eyes.

Well if you did get upgraded, then you lucked out. But I think apple would of just canceled your order due to website error. There wouldn't be enough media backlash for this to be a problem since it was cleared up on the same day it was launched. It's not like when they lowered the price of the iPhone. This is a totally different situation.

Well I just called 1-800-MY-APPLE to see what they had to say about my 2.0 GHz MacBook online order and the woman I spoke to insisted that the 2.0 GHz model does come with a backlit keyboard. She said that only the 2.1 old Macbooks don't. She said a lot of people have been calling and are confused but she is "sure" her information is correct. I had her place a note on my file that I called and that she confirmed that with me. Now when it arrives and doesn't have the backlight I can call again to ask what happened.

If the backlight is a dealbreaker, I would have the order canceled then. There have been people is other threads that actually HAVE the 2.0 and its not backlit.

No, it's not a dealbreaker. I am just curious what they will say once I get the MacBook and I call them to ask why it doesn't have a backlight even though I was specifically told it would. I don't expect any freebies or refunds, but I am curious.

Im sure they will allow you to return it, but if its the backlit keyboard you wanted and to save some time I would have the order canceled if possible and order the 2.4.

I called and got a credit of $75 back on my credit card. Not $150 that people are getting but better then nothing :)

No one should be getting anything...Apple is being really good here giving people credits:

Those rules dont mean anything. They write them, but they will not mean much when presented in court. Same as you say in front of your property I will not be responsible for any damage to person on my property, but you are responsible and courts will make you pay( your insurance) So you can rules all you want, false advertising is false advertising....

wow i would hate to be an apple sales advisor today; it was pretty apparent after the launch that the site info was wrong, anyone who watched the stevenote or looked around on a couple of blogs would see that the backlit keyboard was only available on the $1599 macbook.

i'd hate to cast aspersions on anybody as I don't know how much reading up the people on this thread looking for refunds and store credit did before purchasing the $1299 macbook, but giving apple grief for this seems a little... weak? lame? dishonest even?

sorry if this is flamebait, I just get a bit disheartened by this sort of thing.

-edit-

and reading back this thread i can see in most cases its advice by the telesales team that has lead people to mistakenly purchase the entry level macbook - which I can understand is more than a little concerning. we can understand how this sort of mistake is made though. All the sales staff have to go on is the same wrong information as on the apple sales site and getting them to commit and place notes on an order when you realise something might be up seems pretty underhand to me. You'd hope the apple staff would have a new macbook sitting in a corner somewhere for them to gawp at.

Haaa...is this coming from Yozh, Esq. ?

The rules DO mean something when they are the terms and conditions YOU accept when you purchase products from THEIR online store.

Property ownership responsibility is a horrible comparison. You are responsible for injury to persons which incurred on your property, although you owe a different level of care to different types of people - however, I have nor the time or patience to start explaining that here.

It isn't false advertising. It was a clerical mistake. The reps who answer the phones are just reading off the spec list you see, they probably don't know anymore than that. Try taking that to court and you will lose. They fixed the mistake within a day and offered full refunds to the people who thought they were getting it. It is ridiculous to think Apple should pay for a $300 upgrade b/c of a mistake like that. Like I said they will give you refund. Some people just want something for nothing.

Don't you think Apple should give their sales reps correct information? It's been over 24 hours since the announcement and they still gave me wrong info when I called. I told her that the info on the Apple site contradicted what she told me but she was insistent that she was right. That is more "weak, lame and dishonest" than me calling to make sure I understand what I am getting. I don't hold a grudge against the rep as I am sure she was just doing her job the best she could, but if "tons of people are calling about this" (her words), don't you think they would have the correct information by now?
