I forgot about NFS shift. That may be a good fit as it is a little more arcadey than forza.

Don't forget that you can change the viewpoint in forza to be inside the cars as well.

I just checked out NFS:Shift demo. It is good. Can you confirm this title has off line split screen coop? Even though TeamXBox says it has "coop" I've been burned in the past expecting to have split screen and there is none. Thanks!

Honestly I don't think so, although the online multiplayer is a blast!! So far it's the only game I;ve Platinumed on PS3

I've learned you can't trust teamxbox.com. They don't always have games marked properly. NFS:Shift is such a good game I'll probably get it anyway.

Just got NFS:Shift. What a polished and high fidelity racing game! and it meets my criteria for casual racing. This is probably old news to you racing fans, but I really like how you can set AI and driver skills separately. But no offline splitscreen coop. :(

I'm gonna try Forza 3 again. The demo track is an up in the mountains course which I prefer to city courses. On easy setting, the cars feel sluggish in handling and will skid out of control easily. I'm sure some players want that level of fidelity.

Different cars drive differently. Driving cars that I've driven in real life feels pretty darn close, and friends have said the same thing. In the full game you can adjust the sensitivity, though I haven't. I race with all the assists off, and I only have trouble with some of the high-powered flyweights (mostly R2/R1).

Forza3 is 3rd party outside the car trailing view.

In non-splitscreen, there are five views - near & far chase, in-car, on-hood, and on-bumper. I use the in-car one, and love it. Have a 90" screen though.

Does it have splitscreen coop?

Yes, but maddeningly: two player only, and offline only (ie, no playing on XBL and splitscreen, like Halo or other games). There are also fewer options in the split-screen lobby than in XBL multiplayer (only 2 AI cars, no timed races, etc).

In splitscreen, there are only three views: near & far chase, and on-bumper

Are you on PS3 or 360?

If PS3 add me and we'll race on Shift.

Nuck81 is my PSN name

Thanks for the offer, but I am on 360 and have no online play capabilities at this time. :(

Offline, splitscreen coop makes this worth another look. Thanks! :)
What is an on-bumper view?

Need for speed has no offline coop, but it does have about 5 different views. I like both the in-car driving view, and the 1st person view, no car visible, but you do have some instruments along the bottom of the screen. For situational awareness, it's a compromise between driver view and chase view, although the driver view does have a left side mirror to see cars coming up on the side.

Obviously!

Oh man - Pole Position. I spent many many quarters on that game as a kid. That and Spy Hunter.

From my NES days I also enjoyed some Rad Racer:

Wow, I am way too young to remember any of these...

Yeah, I'm certainly dating myself. I'm not sure how old IgnatiusTheKing is (I think we're about the same age, or I'm a bit older), but even I was pretty young when Pole Position was big.

If we're including retro, this one HAS to be mentioned!!

Spent soooo many hours building evil tracks for my friend...(and playing the ones he built for me!) :D

I had pole position on my Nintendo when I was in 5th or 6th grade, so I was pretty young, too, but if I remember correctly from the CFB thread, I think I'm a little older than you. I graduated high school in '93.

I also had an Atari 2600 (I think) when I was growing up and still remember playing Pong (with the paddle) and Asteroids (and later, Pitfall) with my dad and my older brother. I think there was a racing game that used the paddle, too, but I won't swear it.

Played a lot of split-screen past two days. More annoyances: no replays for split-screen games. Neither player earns credits. You can't load tuning setups like you can on XBL.

Still, it's a ton of fun.

What is an on-bumper view?

Camera is mounted to the bumper of the car; all you see is road in front of you and not your car/cockpit. Like this:

the 1st person view, no car visible, but you do have some instruments along the bottom of the screen.

although the driver view does have a left side mirror to see cars coming up on the side.

As does Forza— and you can look around with the right stick (in any view). In cockpit view, you can see and use the far wing mirror (if the car has one) by doing this.
