I know, it's the internet, but this site is divisive as hell. Not the fault of the site, but every thread I click into is some childish debate about who's smarter, more knowledgeable, who's dick is bigger. I was regularly on a year ago about the great dumb debate about whether Apple "lost it's way" in their new MBP lineup. It seems that is still going on. Now I've been back regularly because of my excitement about the new X. People are arguing about whether the 8+ or X is better? WTH? Did people argue if the MB was better than the MBP?People are just spewing stupid "facts" about screen size, value per dollar, size of bezels, size in hands, and how clever they are because they bought the iPhone [of choice]. I get that these discussions are necessary in part to help people make decisions, but the level of vitriol reminds me of US politics. People stop making sense and just argue to argue. I frequent other forums for info, but the level of trolling here is on another level. Am I alone? Possible that I am just out of touch with internet forums in 2017? It's MADNESS!!
Sounds like you are just jealous of everyone...
(joking, joking).
people aren't happy unless they complain, & they are getting stupider, you should know that. I do.)

Right,it's completely acceptable for people to be discussing why they did *not* upgrade and why something older might be better for them vs newer and defending that choice.
Forums should not be one way where all discussions are about what's new and those who don't update or have something older should just remain quiet.
Honestly, if anything, the defensive users I notice seem to be the ones that embrace anything Apple does as amazing and "the future", etc and they often are unable to handle even the most gently critical view of that approach they've taken
Both sides of that need to just make points, reiterate if need be, but not bash it endlessly, I agree.

I think 90% of debate and vitriol on this forum over new/old would completely evapourate and people would be 1 million times happier with their Apple devices of whatever make and model ….. if Apple had an option after a new OS or iOS so-called **UPGRADE** …… to press a simple clear button on your device that reads. "This 'Upgrade' is a 'Downgrade' Please revert me back to previous OS/iOS and all previous settings" ……. with a Feedback box where you can give your personal reasons.

….. if you don't use iCloud and have problems with TimeMachine regression …. this is the BUTTON everyone wants on ALL their software ….. and the only way people will move forward on these debates ….

If App developers + Apple were sued under the Trade Descriptions Act everytime they describing their latest 'bug-riddled abortion' as an "Upgrade" …..Where are they living?Fantasy Island?!:D
…… it would give Moderators on here a well-deserved holiday from a lot of the 'verbal aggro' on Forums ….that's for sure.

And Apple could save a fortune on Genius Staff and Call Centre/Support infrastructure needed to work 24/7 365 days to sort out the 'mess' everytime they want to make a 'progression' leap which some people like but 70 odd percent don't!:p

Likewise with Apps …… People want to decide for themselves when their old App is obsolete, …. especially ones they've paid for with hard earned cash! ….. this is not a decision App producers or Apple have the right to take ….. or make it their right in unreasonable Terms and Conditions Legistlation.

Apple has 'trashed' so many of my old apps that used to work great …..and totally p'd off many many App Developers with their constant poorly execute chops and changes to a new OS/iOS.
Many App producers can't afford to make these continual expensive changes.

Do all this and 90% of the 'debate' MADNESS would stop on here, and elsewhere.

It's in Apple's hands to make these changes for the good of their reputation ….. and make their devices the 'tools of the professionals once again.

Wonder how much it costs Apple to 'medicate' and constantly replace their stressed out programmers after each OS/iOS release. Geeez …. don't these guys deserve to catch a 'break' during their pioneering ventures??

Yep - Really the issue is anonymity mixed with a lack of face to face interaction.
It does wild things to behavior... (not in a positive way)

A bit like when you join the Forces and pull on a uniform ….. it can make you 'faceless' ….. and gives you a licence to do all sorts of questionable things.!

What everyone really want is a personal blog on here - so that they may tell the world the exact nature of their decision to do X and not Y. Often a thread title either begins with or contains "I've decided to switch" - it's the worst kind of threads to read. But I also know that I will have to make popcorn - sit back and enjoy the show for those kind of threads. Entertainment. It's what it's all about. The whole world revolves around comedy right now. No one is being serious about anything or anyone. My age also kind of shows here when I begin reasoning - even the temper I have. Nearing 40 years of age.

I created a thread in the Picture Gallery where I asked users to post the longest cable they have at home. I was so tired of seeing the sub-forum filled up with silly thread about purchased coffee cups and what not. I have no right to complain about such things but I also felt it was a fun thread to create. Putting a little humor in to the forums.

I belong to only one public forum - this one, because I am always searching for ways to improve my own experience with Apple products - but when I see how people bash one another, I cannot imagine what would happen if they all met one in real life. Who knows, maybe the person you are insulting online is your boss.

The latest example of such bashing I am just shaking my head about is one one of the other sites - this guy received his iMac Pro earlier than expected, and instead of being happy for him, others are blasting him for taking a photo of the box in front of his Merc. The rest of the thread is spoilt by insults about the owner being snobbish, because he has the bucks for a Merc and an iMac Pro.

Should we not be glad that some of these orders are shipping ahead of schedule and ask the owner to share his experience of his iMac Pro with us?

Sure..

But it's sort of fair to wonder (and rib him a bit maybe) why he felt compelled to take the picture in front of his expensive car.

The motivations there are strange. Is that to showcase all the wonderful things in his life?
To show he has money for not just the iMac Pro but also a very nice car?

Just an odd choice to take & share that particular photo (at least odd to some of us)

I've been around a while, and don't think this forum is any worse than other forums with a large userbase.

However, I rarely get involved in debates on here, because ultimately no one really cares what a nobody like me thinks (and I care very little for the opinions of others) - forums serve a good purpose, but discussing what's "better" in anything other than a purely objective test is pointless.

Its real simple. Report posts that you believe are in violation of MR policy. And any post(s) that you feel doesn't violate policy but is just too inane to warrant a retort, ignore said post(s).

Help the mods by doing your due diligence. Beyond that, take care of your own life and let the meaningless drivel go by. If you allow the infantile rhetoric to bother you, you give it power over you (in some way).

Totally disagree with tattletale policy. Just skip the post. Don't read it, put nasty members on ignore. Using officious hall monitors to ban and delete is just another weapon for the manipulators to exploit. They enjoy it.

That said, there are other, less toxic environments to get Mac news and help. I find myself coming here less and less.

Still, some great people here who are decent and helpful.

I am reminded that twenty five years ago, Apple was in danger of extinction. Apple users should be happy, not perpetually angry.

Agree, I frequent many forums and this one is the worst for it by far.
Then you have not been to TheVerge, Engadget, or even Ars.
It's the internet. As more people have access to it, well, that's the result of democratizing a medium ti voice out anything.

Compare the discussion on this 9to5Mac article on the iMac Pro to the discussion on this MacRumors article on the iMac Pro. It's like night and day.

Reason and logical argument still exist on the internet, they're just in short supply (especially here on MacRumors).

Comments on an article are different than a forum. No matter what the article is about, at least a quarter of replies are just trolls stirring things up. Forums are a little different in that it's a loose community and your credibility sticks with your user account. No one really takes noob troll comments seriously and they get hammered for trolling. Long time members who just argue about dumb things surprises me a bit.

That's just douchey no matter how you look at it. Sure the guy may be excited, but it's not relevant and sure to rub people the wrong way. But I generally don't reply to these things and just move on. It's poor form, but I don't think douchiness is a reason for me to attack someone. I'm not surprised when others do though.

I agree - "attack" is a strong word & action and I wouldn't support that either.
That said - How ridiculously sensitive are we now?

If you post a pic of your Benz & iMac Pro, you know somebody is going to say something.
Don't post that sort of thing if getting any reaction about it bothers you..

I'm pretty sure he knew he was framing up the shot in front of his expensive car. It wasn't an accident.

No, I would never ever go on The Verge or websites like it, lol. But I have belonged to probably 60+ forums since 1997. I have a lot of interested and frequent many often.

Greetings to a frozen land, where reindeer breaks in half while turning

Reading this webpage is like watching a little kids arguing
“Your mom smells like poo, my mom smells yummy”
“no, your mom smells like old cheese”
“Your mom smells like socks”

Rinse and repeat

I know this is a bit of a delayed response, but good reminder. Apple has had some really bad years, and I think many here are entitled kids who don't know Apple as an underdog. No perspective that they are still vision driven and not necessarily driven to do whatever entitled pricks feel they should do. I will always respect them as long as they do what they think is best and deal with any consequences, even if it costs them dollars. There are so many companies that do whatever it takes to make the next quarter's numbers and forget why they exist in the first place. I respect any company that has the balls to disrupt and stick to a vision of a better future. If Apple did what other follower companies did, we'd never make any progress. As if we really needed yet another Win/PC or Android manufacturer. Fine products, but not consistently pushing the envelope year after year as Apple does. Apple is far from perfect, but I love how they stick to their guns.

Apple is a fine company that some times tries to fix things that aren't broken which is why they're still not all that popular in enterprise. The superdrive removal was probably done at the right time but not the right time for me, but I do think the USB-C move was correct thing to do. I think the issue might have been mitigated a bit if they'd given the touch bar another year to bake and made that change the following generation so you didn't get type C and the touch bar. I feel the same way about the MP the design other the bein the only tube shaped thing in an office is fine but it needed the option of an additional SSD in lieu of the second graphics card so there could be an internal scratch disk then once the project was done pushed off to external storage like always. In tech it's always good to push but increments are best when the computer is generally the least expensive object in the work environment.

Of course your points are all correct, but the downside to doing things that way is that the industry never gets pushed to leap ahead. They may get there eventually, but they simply lack balls to make bold moves like that. Gotta love that, at least I do. "No CD-ROM drive?! The horror!" Baby steps are for HP and Dell.

HP and Dell's bread and butter is enterprise they can't by business model be the instigators of change Apple thrives in the consumer space where the change happens and that change creeps into enterprise either through BYOD or the boss thinking something is a good idea.

On the jobber or small scale side/Single office side you run into problems like I had one computer on network one off and thumbdrives and cloud storage not authorized.

^That guy is Spartacus.

Personally, I think it is a mistake adding the "Like"-function to a forum. I've yet to see a web community flourish after doing that, and one of the more annoying things that does is encourage some (vocal) people to post punch lines instead of messages with actual substance. This is fairly evident when looking at comments on just about any news story on the front page.

If there is an option to like something, there should be a dislike button as well.

But what do I know, it's not like I'm contributing much of anything to the proceedings. Carry on.

Seems like the upvote or like function has been around for quite some time around here and things have been fine as far as flourishing goes. There are definitely some meme-like things that get posted and get a bunch of likes just because, but often enough if those are reported for what they are they get taken care of.

I think there are a lot of users on here that are barely able to afford apple products causing them to either hate on the new products because they cant afford it or if they are going to purchase, have completely unrealistic expectations and whatever sacrifices they make to get it, it better be 100% perfect. It's just a piece of technology. Maybe if people spent their time working and making money, they wouldn't sweat the small stuff and live their life. Give an opinion, small discussion and move on. There is a small minority of people that just spew their crap in every thread they can and usually, dont even own the product they are complaining about.

That is some weird sh-t.
I can afford Apple products, but I’m not stupid enough to pay a premium for crap, but really, like a lot of other Apple critics of late, we have watched with disgust and lately rebellion at what’s become of this once-great franchise. The criticism will abate when things shape up in Cupertino...imo.
