It's MADNESS!!

It only gets to me in the tech side of the forums when I'm trying to research a problem with a device or have some question about software. Then I get annoyed at whatever starts looking to me like troll posts no one including me bothers to report. I'll report a clear spam post if I happen to see a fresh one but that's about it over there.

I keep a curse jar for donations to charity and usually the iPhone threads are good for my local food pantry, what can I say. It's embarrassing --and freaking expensive-- to hear what I sometimes say out loud to an empty room while reading an iPhone thread.

In PRSI the nuttiness is either fun or I just skip a thread if I'm not up for trying to debate whatever is the topic. I sometimes put people on ignore but that does tend to mess up the sense of a thread unless I read it as a guest.. but then I see the ignore posts and then I see red on one of them and take the person off ignore to respond, so... heh... trying to grow up is so hard when you're in your old age.

In other Community forums I tend to ignore most of the threads unless I'm procrastinating in real life and at that point will read even a cereal box so a Community thread is always an option too.

I do end up with notifications of deleted posts after I willingly follow almost any ol' Pied Piper down the road of off-topic posting... trying to pay more attention to the thread title might help me, but... not always .

Compare the discussion on this 9to5Mac article on the iMac Pro to the discussion on this MacRumors article on the iMac Pro. It's like night and day.

Reason and logical argument still exist on the internet, they're just in short supply (especially here on MacRumors).

There is a lot of invaluable content on this forum, it just depends on where you are looking for it and what your interests are .

In general social media has dumbed down classic message board discussions, but it's a lot worse in some areas than in others .
The MacPro forum for example is still one of the best sources out there, the more iGadget oriented forums not so much .

Discussions on front page articles are notoriously vitriolic, especially if politics are involved .
But as a knowledge base and community to help with issues, Macrumors is still up there .

I've received a couple more likes (thank you), and it reminded me about this post. I haven't posted on MR in weeks, and it's been rather refreshing not to read some of the garbage on here posted by people. I was recently reminded of a more philosophical/psychological explanation to this madness that is obvious to many. It seems that the this era of twitter and social media seems to reward people for complaining. Companies are used to jumping at complaints as they haven't found an equilibrium in terms of how to respond yet. This seems to be entitling complainers to expect rewards or compensation. I've done my share of complaining when service or products were simply awful, objectively speaking. However, for the most part, I HATE people who bitch and moan about things without solving problems themselves. The simplest solution for not finding a product satisfactory is to not buy it, and I know the majority of the complaining comes from people who aren't even buying the products in question. ****! This society is heading in a bad place when everyone is incentivized to act like entitled 5 year olds and just complain. Maybe it's my lack of patience for this from being a parent of young kids. But yeah, the drone on MR sounds a lot like my small children. People come on MR to commiserate bad experiences too, that has always been the case on forums. But these last couple years have been next level, like there is some agenda. Like many have said, these complainers need to get off the anonymous keyboard into the real world and be held accountable for bad behavior like this. You know the guy that inserts himself in every conversation to complain about the same thing over and over. It gets old, and you kind of just want to get away from him and/or punch him in the face. Maybe it's just me.

Just block/ignore those people.

Doing that here, rather liberally, has literally transformed the site for me.
So so much better and this site is really great about pretty fully "hiding" blocked users from your view, even removing quotes of theirs from posters who you haven't blocked.

Give it a shot - It's really great

I know I'm being a masochist, but I refuse to ignore anyone on these sites. But yeah, it would make life more pleasant. If I ignored, I would never see the devolution of society happening before my eyes, nor be able to comment on it to anonymous people on the internet.

That quote was in reference to people IRL as an example of what ridiculously bad and annoying behavior that is, even though these people don't realize it or care on the internet. Maybe these people do act the same IRL, and they are here because they stopped getting invites to go out to the bar.

lol - Fair enough..
To each his own...

I honestly wouldn't even come to this site any more without the ignore/block function. There's just too much junk and nonsense to wade through and life is too short for that.

Perhaps you could create a 2nd account and login "unblocked" for the bare pickle, blowout misery experience and then switch over to your normal account for when enjoyment, fun conversation and learning are the goals?

Haha! Interesting thought, one account for real use and the other for social experimentation by seeing "the bare pickle". TBH, I don't need to come on that often because (shockingly) I don't have endless problems and bad experiences with Apple! It's fun to come here and talk about how fun and cool our new toys are though and the occasional help advice. Just commenting on society overall and it's extension into MR.

When you block people, you'll see a link at the bottom of the page that says something like "Click here to see Ignored Content". Then you will see what you are missing if you want.

I used to be a happy Apple fan, now i'm just an angry costumer and unable to talk about it at work because I depend on Apple products for my paycheck.

Folks have unlearned to communicate in the real world amongst real people, their real feelings and opinions. 12 hours a day at work and amongst friends they say "Yes, of course and will do" and portray to be the coolest person alive to be liked.

That disconnect has to explode else where and that is what you're seeing when people write on forums. There, they don't have to be that political correct and cool human being that can take on anything.

The internet and smartphones is lullaby'ing the coward in all of us !

Despite your conclusion, your argument appears to incriminate the "real world" more than the "internet and smartphones".

There is only the real world. Everything else is virtual. Former is cruel and difficult to survive in... Sure, if you can't say "no" or speak your mind in public, you can douse the pain with an AppleTV and an abundance of Netflix Series but it will only make matters worse and as time progress one will find oneself with frequent doctor and drug store visits.

20000 years ago - if one could not hunt one'd parish of starvation - today, if one can't hunt, one purchases a smartphone on a monthly plan and watch Netflix while eating microwave food during evening hours and enslaving oneself to a min. pay in the daytime.

It would be even better if they upped the 1000 person block limit.
Yes god forbid anyone complain about Apple.

So if someone is not a social person they are destined to be a failure. Nice atttiude.

I'd guess about 80% of what people say on forums they would never say to a person face to face. Heck even something as simple as requiring people to use their real name as their user name would curtail the rhetoric substantially.

I mainly come here to learn about Apple products but sometimes fall into the rabbit hole that is PRSI. I start off looking at new posts and sometimes come across a thread title I am forced to click on. From there I get sucked into a childish partisan debate about whatever, sometimes get suspended for a week or so, go outside, live in the real world for a while, (just bought a new Kayak), and then return at some point and see what's new on MR.

I sometimes add a comment to the "New Mac Mini is definitely coming" thread after every couple of hundred pages of comments on that thread.

Rinse and repeat. Works for me.

I just don't know how you really enforce that in a way that I'd personally be comfortable with.
I'm certainly not uploading copies of my drivers license/etc to a site like this to "prove my identity".

I think the barriers to figuring out how to do that and what it might to do forum traffic are reasons why more sites don't do such a thing. The internet is really held back by us going down the AD supported/page view route to monetization. There simply can't be meaningful change when a site like this has to worry about torpedoing itself by being too restrictive or cumbersome.
