Pretty much you just run into lagers and ales with a couple of stouts thrown in. Bass and Harp make nice ales but I think killians red is a red ale. I actually think budwiser select is a pretty good lager but Im sure lots of people would disagree, but either way most american beers are lagers. The stout beer is guiness draft, IMHO. Oh and if you really like light beer try a wheat beer. You also must try a black and tan, I wish I had a nice black and tan right now. Also, made in holland is a good thing.

Have you got a link you can post?

As for beer, it all depends on what's available.
As someone has pointed out.

Sam Smiths is damn fine beer. Their Sovereign Bitter is my drink of choice. Refreshing with a hint of elderflower about it.
The Imperial bitter is a little heavier and nuttier.

If lager is your drink then either their Pure Brewed or Organic. Both are awesome.
If you can lay your hands on some Ayingerbrau, then Prinz would be the recommendation as you don't drink much. It's strong, but won't blow your head off like the D Pils.

In hot weather I'm very partial to Hogaarden a fantastic white beer.

There's just too many to choose really.

Avoid crap like Stella (it's all preservatives and other chemicals), Foster (tasteless water) as is Carling.

My overall advice would be if in doubt stick with German imported beer. They have age old purity laws for beer.
No chemicals reduces the chances of a hangover

EDIT: The Sam Smiths Taddy Porter is a very heavy drink, like Guinness. Not a good summer beer really.
Belgian beers are very nice too, Duvel do some very strong beers.

Love it! :)

This is making me thirsty. I am done teaching in an hour and then it is a quick stop at the store then home to enjoy the finally nice weather.

A great microbrew here in West Michigan is Bell's Beer. I think they ship somewhat regionally. You might be able to find there website. Their most popular kind is their summer brew Oberon. Since Bell's is in Kalamazoo, for the last day of classes for Western Michigan University they make a batch of Eccentric Ale. I believe it has something like 18% in it. You can only get it at the brewery though.

Has anyone tried homebrewing? I am looking into trying that soon.

Fan-****ing-tastic! We're in the same 5-digit, or damn close....MI has some solid micro-brews. I'm sorting out the paperwork to father Founder's child and Ms. Bells is my mistress on the side. New Holland is fun to look at, but she's pretty new to it all and the other two put out more like pros imsuasro

I am going on a cruise this summer (never been on one before!) and I saw in the little booklet that it has an "English style pub" in it where you can go in and try all different kinds of beers. I don't know if it will really be like that or not, but I wanted to ask; What are some good beers to drink? I grew up in a state where the only thing everyone drinks is Miller Lite. I have only begun to drink Blue Moon and I love it.
Any suggestions? I don't know much about beer or what kind tastes best, but I know I don't really like Killian's.

While I really like the sense of community on MR, I really don't understand certain thread topics like this one. This has been a long, uneventful season for Mac users, but to ask for advice on what beer to drink seems to me to be the height of ridiculousness. Like any other personal decision, this must be based on personal experience. So try as many different types of beers as you can to see which you like the most. This is true for beer, food, clothes, computers, sex, etc.

Sage advice from our bartelby, especially when it comes to...

Avoid crap like Stella (it's all preservatives and other chemicals), Foster (tasteless water) as is Carling.

I'm wondering exactly what beers an 'English-style pub' will have, and indeed how well they'll be kept – proper ale needs a bit of looking after to be in perfect supping condition. I strongly suspect that being on a boat the beers are going to be either bottled or nitrokeg, not proper cask ales which are one of the finest things known to man.

As others have said, a link would be very useful, if only so we can tell you which to avoid. Mind, if you're on a cruise I expect you'll have ample opportunity to give everything a try – if so, we expect detailed tasting notes. ;)

Belgian beers are great.
Try Hennepin and Tappist as well.

Agreed. I always get one whenever a bar has a Belgian.

Seriously though, why not just try a little of everything? It's a cruise so I imagine you'll be there for around a week.

The last cruise I went on (2 years ago, Norwegian Cruise Line on the Dawn ship, I think) had an awesome "English style pub". They had a British Beatles cover band there every day, great times. I was there every night- it was always packed and the lead singer, who happened to be female, was FANTASTIC.

The mark of a true British pub;) :D

Hehe, I always laugh when people say "nuttier" or the like

Samuel Smiths is damn fine beer, I concur! I drank a ton of their Oatmeal Stout (I believe that was it, Oatmeal something) last Xmas while watching someone's house....wonderful beverage.

All this talk about Sammy Smith's makes me feel like I'm at a Phish show.

It makes me feel like popping to The Murenger, my local.

Ooh, whilst seeing if The Murenger still have a website. This popped under!

German beer = very good. A good Alt beer from Dusseldorf can't go wrong (Frankenheim Alt) or I believe they call them dunkel's in other areas of Germany. Bartelby is correct, Duvel is great as is Bitbuger or Veltins.

Some to try:

Ayinger Bräu Weisse- a wonderful German wheat (any of the Ayinger line is good)

Fullers London Pride

Boddingtons (I know some may object, but it fares well despite climate and conditioning)

Old Speckled Hen

3 Monts Grand Reserve (It's French and it's delicious)

Also any beers from Rogue are great (though they are a US micro). I haven't had a beer in their line that was a disappointment!

The mark of a true British pub;) :D

And I'd have it no other way. :)

a local irish pub has a beer called Woodpecker Cider. ITS FRIGGIN AWESOME! it's slightly sweet, but has a definite beer taste. Its almost like a cross between champaign and beer, but in a good way!

I see that all over the place these day. Not a bad "beer" (I really wouldn't call it beer, really) - I'll drink it, but I wouldn't order it.

My faves- Yuengling, by far. I'm also quite partial to Magic Hat #9 (great beer, has a slight hint of berries to it).

I think I'll go to the magic hat brewery tomorrow... I can cause it's 10 minutes away :) yeah, #9 is awesome. Earlier tonight it was either Bass or #9. I went with Bass cause there's always tomorrow!
