Newcastle is a favorite of mine, though it is pretty popular as well.

If you want something a little more off the beaten path, I suggest Theakston's Old Peculier.

Old Speckled Hen is another good one.

All three of those are English, and with names like that, how could they not be good? :D

I see that all over the place these day. Not a bad "beer" (I really wouldn't call it beer, really)

Of course you wouldn't call it beer, it's cider.
Some recent favorites of mine: La Fin du Monde, Smuttynose Imperial Stout (good luck finding that one though). Someone mentioned Victory, their Storm King Imperial Stout is massive. Also, if you have a chance, check out Viking Blood mead. Not beer, but it packs a whallop.

You either live in Wisconsin, Illinois, or Indiana. Am I right? it's definitely a Midwestern state.

someone mentioned Bass, but I like Killians, so you might not like my list.

Nice guess :)
Indiana, you're right LOL
Yea I could never get the taste of Killians down :(

While I really like the sense of community on MR, I really don't understand certain thread topics like this one. This has been a long, uneventful season for Mac users, but to ask for advice on what beer to drink seems to me to be the height of ridiculousness. Like any other personal decision, this must be based on personal experience. So try as many different types of beers as you can to see which you like the most. This is true for beer, food, clothes, computers, sex, etc.

I posted such a thing in the community discussion because I was interested to see the opinions of people from all over the world in regard to beer. As with any personal experience, people get curious and tend to ask others about their personal experience with their clothes, computers, sex, food, and beer. I am safe to assume there is probably more than 10 beers out there and in the course of about 7 days I will be on this cruise, I wouldn't have enough time to scratch the surface of beers. Knowing almost nothing about beer outside the typical domestic brands, I wanted to know what others might feel like is the best to try, and I could go from there. Some of these suggestions have been really good and I can't wait to wear my liver out. After all, it is the community discussion, best place to ask IMO. :)

To others who asked for a link....a link to what?

belgian and someone called it the best beer in the world :

westvleteren

You won't find it in any shop, it is only for sale at the monastery. You also have to make an appointment before you drive over to buy a crate..

I still got one bottle in the fridge.

Yup, pretty much all German beer rocks!

but my favorite really is Paulaner Kristallweizen, which I can't find in the US. It's a light color beer that's really smooth and something you can have all night - not at a party, but just chilling.

I like dark beers too, but usually not more than one.

I think Beck's was voted best German beer at the university I went to last year. Beck's Gold is good if you can find it.

If you can find a German beer called Jever try it. I think it is the best beer available. However, the taste might be a bit bitter if you are used to some of the weak standard american beers.

Has anyone here ever tried Affligem? A friend of mine used to bring a bottle to us on our birthdays back when it came in a clay bottle. This is one of the best beers I have ever had IMO. Though I don't know if they were bought out or something.

Or alternatively, Fosters is brilliant also - though not Scottish!

You just proved how little you know about beer. :p

There are a lot of bad beers in Australia, and yet they're served in pubs across the country. The only exception is Fosters, which is too low on the scale to even register as a typical crappy beer.

It's like America's Budweiser, but worse.

It's like Canada's Labatt Blue or Molson's Canadian, but worse.

It's like Heineken in The Netherlands, but worse.

It's probably the crappiest beer in the country, and yet the only major beer Australia exports.

If any of you ever get the chance, you should try Danish beer (not Carlsberg). They are great! Lots of different types, made (with love!) from a lot of microbreweries. Unfortunately I don't think very many are exported...

Besides our local brew, I think Belgian beers are the best. The large number of different varieties is in itself well worth a visit to Belgium. Chimay Bleu and Rochefort 10 being my personal favourites.

If it's Scottish beer you want to recommend. look no further than Caledonian Deuchars. Lovely from the bottle, but best enjoyed fresh from the cask. :)

Lol, yes I was being moderately sarcastic about Tennants (I would imagine it is the most commonly sold beer in the West of Scotland - and likely the largest pharmacological cause of liver disease in those areas.)

If I were to suggest a good Scottish beverage, it would be Belhaven Best.

Take Pride In Everything You Do

Fullers London Pride

A very fine pint. I also like the tag-line: "Take Pride In Everything You Do" :) When available, in Finland, Pride is typically bottled; but my local had a cask last month. Wonderful!

Other beers to look out for: anything by Hook Norton, Timothy Taylor "Landlord" (it is one of Madonna's favourites :p), Greene King "Ruddles", and Harveys "Sussex Best" too! You must definitely try Old Speckled Hen! (In truth, the list is virtually endless, one of the joys of British pub culture is the discovery of one's own favourites.)

I am going on a cruise this summer (never been on one before!) and I saw in the little booklet that it has an "English style pub"

The word style should ring warning bells, but hopefully they will serve some interesting pints. As others have mentioned: avoid mixing different styles in a session, and good luck -- let us know how it goes!

Fosters is brilliant also
David

And you managed to say that with a straight face?
I'm impressed!!:)

Oh and another vote for London Pride.

Actually all Fuller's beers are excellent. ESB is awesome!!!!

Honey Dew is ***** gorgeous on a hot summer's day!

I'm not massively taken with it – it's drinkable but it seems a little flat and characterless to me.

...anything by Hook Norton, Timothy Taylor "Landlord" ...You must definitely try Old Speckled Hen!
Old Hooky is very nice stuff, and Landlord is one of the nicest beers I've ever had the pleasure of sampling.

Old Speckled Hen is another good pint, but be aware of the fact that they've fiddled with it a bit – it's now at a weaker strength from the cask to encourage more people to 'drink it socially' or something. The full strength version is still available in bottles and cans, though.

Seconded - Ceres is generally a very good brewer, but I have a weakness for most of Albani's stuff. The blue JuleBryg is a long time favourite.

Sadly the smell that comes off the Ceres brewery in Arhus is slightly off putting - it's like being in Hull ;) :D

Surprised no one has mentioned (at least I didn't see it) Erdinger. The Dunkel is a thing of joy.

Thank you to the Porterhouse for selling it - one of London's best beer houses.

Nice guess :)
Indiana, you're right LOL
Yea I could never get the taste of Killians down :(

I knew it! Miller/Miller lite is so entrenched in those states its ridiculous. I feel for you. Basically, that's the reason I left Illinois :D

Have fun on your cruise. I took my family on one last year (our first) and it was great, until the last day when my wife got sick with the virus that ravaged the ship

let me give you this warning : WASH YOUR HANDS EVERY 30 MINUTES!!

Probably against a forum rule of some kind, but I plead ignorance :p

Take a look at this ode to our favourite beverage: linky

It popped into my head as soon as I started reading this thread lol!
