So... it either smells of fish, cocoa or sewers – which is it? :p

All 3  It made me gag, but no-one else seemed to notice.

Completely off topic - what's the cocoa smell in Hull? I can only think of Rowntrees, but that's in York.

Still on Danish beer - the Easter beer with the chicken on it is pretty good too.

And whoever knocked Carlsberg (NJuul?) needs to experiment with their speciality beers. They're about 40DKK but very good.

There are a couple of cocoa mills which are supposed to give the place a chocolatey smell on certain days, but I don't have a good sense of smell so I can't say I've noticed it.

Still, you're safe from any nasty pongs if you take shelter in one of our splendid pubs, of which we have several (see how I cunningly got the thread back on topic there? ;)).

We should start an MR version of the Good Pub Guide. I'm sure that between most of the British members we've got more experience than they have :p

Alrighty then, Carlsberg does make a few good beers (Semper Arden and Jacobsen), but the rest are terrible! And I have tried them all, trust me. And the one with the chickens on it is definitely one of their bad ones as well. The only reason that Carlsberg started making Semper Arden and Jacobsen a few years ago were, that they were facing stiff competition from a myriad of new microbreweries. Hence, I support the little ones and mostly buy my beer from them. They are much better anyway.
If you get the chance, try Bröckhouse, Willemoes, Herslev, Troldhede, Skands, Svaneke (especially their Chocolate Stout, a clear favourite) and... I could go on... They are really good!

Btw, Aarhus does have kind of that old beer smell to it... I lived there for 6 years...
