I want (do not necessarily "need") the following:
* Highly extendible audio player, like Foobar2000.
* Application to perform ABX test on audio files.
* Video player which accept "any" format. Much like VLC, but more up-to-date.

For Video Conversion - MPEGStreamClip from www.squared5.com works great on mac or windows.

Plex is pretty awesome Home Theater Software for Mac, just follow the tutorials, setup is pretty simple and straight forward.

For Ripping DVDs with Encryption - MacTheRipper (donation version), RipIt!, and Handbrake are all good, and get around most encryption. Sometimes you have to be smarter than the movie...

Someone listed one on windows for writing with database bibliography and database general...I like StoryMill, and the company that makes it has several other pieces of software that look really good...you might check that out for Mac.

I would like an affordable, user friendly, software for monitoring multiple IP Cameras, I've found a few for Mac, but they want so much that it's ridiculous, or you have to actually run multiple instances of the program...
On Windows BlueIris does this nicely for only $50.

A zip/rar program that's better integrated with the OS, the way WinRar and some other Windows programs are. BetterZip and Springy are OK, but don't offer the range of features that Windows clients do.

I'd also agree with the chorus that's looking for Mac equivalents for DVD ripping.

THIS. Stuffit is nice, but overly expensive (compared to the many free alternatives for Win).

Also emulators (like EPSXE and Project64) and a number of games (namely Valve releases and a few MMORPGs like Aion) getting PROPER ports, none of this "wrapping the windows versions" mess.

... Heck, I'd even take the wrapper. Getting annoyed that many MMORPGs I want to play (some free- and pay-to-play) won't run properly in CrossOver/WINE and its just drives me nuts. I am not dedicated enough to these games to boot in WinXP every time I want to play one of them for an hour or so.

Here's an idea for an app (at least, i don't think such an app exists):

An app to batch change the icon, on osx, for a bunch of folders automatically.

I've got my music collection placed like this, in folders:

artist x
______album 01
______album 02
______album 03

artist y
______album 01
______album 02

artist z
______album 01
______album 02
______album 03

etc.
I'm changing the icon for each 'album' folder using the wonderful slipcover app ( http://www.bohemiancoding.com/slipcover/ ); a bit tedious to do them all and it will take me a long time, but no problem. On the other hand i would like to change all of the "artist" folders icon to another one (one of the boxes here > http://www.bvfonts.com/icons/icons.php ).

So, does anyone know of an app that does this? Thank you in advance!

A visualhub replacment would be nine jeez how long does it take

i know about ivideo converter but that dead now

It seems reasonable to me that, if slipcover supports Automator, it would be relatively simple to write an Automator action that, well, automates this repetitive task.

Are you refering to the task that slipcover does, the "apply this icon to this file/folder"? That's one icon for one file, and another file would need another icon. I'm not sure how could automator, err, automate that; oh wait, perhaps if one had a film.mkv and a film.jpg on the same folder then automator could understand that and apply the film.jpg to - say - the blu-ray template and change the icon for film.mkv accordingly. That would be swell, yes! I'm going to suggest that to the author, thanks for the idea!

Regarding the other task, one icon > loads of folders, could automator do that as well, you reckon?

One icon -> loads of folders should be easily doable in Automator, yes.

I'd like to ssee mapping software, a la Delorme Street Atlas or even MS Streets & Trips. Would love to have something that resides on my computer, does not need a GPS and does not need to be connected to the internet. Sadly, Route 66 does not measure up (if it even is being updated any more.)!

the four reasons I still need a Bootcamp partition...

1, Mediamonkey
2, DbPoweramp CD Ripper
3, Newsleecher
4, Sony Audio Programs (ACID, Soundforge)

Then I could banish Windows forever....

I agree with this. I would also like something with as good post processing capabilities as ffdshow. Of the OSX video players, Movist is my favorite. VLC has a ****** UI on any platform. With audio players I'm stuck with iTunes because none of the alternatives are any better.

A good guitar tuner software would be nice too. I use AP Tuner on Windows and it's far more accurate than anything available for OSX. The best I've tried for OSX is TunaPitch, but it's not good enough for setting intonation.

I am missing a truly powerful search feature, that directly shows me the search-term I have entered as a document preview.

I can not understand this: OSX has Spotlight and Quicklook.
Why is there no integration between the two?

I would love to quickly glance at documents that are turned up during search (and quickly see the actual position in the document where the keyword was found).
Copernic does this on Windows - for free!

i responded without thoroughly reading your post first..

"(and quickly see the actual position in the document where the keyword was found)."

yeah, i'm not sure if this is possible in os x.. sounds nice though..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
my first response was this..............

i'm not positive i quite understand what you're asking for and i'm not familiar with copernic but, if i am understanding you correctly, you can already do this in os x..

just use the search bar in the finder window while in cover flow view.. if the search word is in an email for instance, you'll be able to see the whole email in coverflow... same with text files, pdfs, etc..

[or do the search in spotlight then click 'show all' which will open the results in a finder window.. go into cover flow view from there]

[edit] -- oh wait, you said quicklook and i said coverflow.. for quicklook, just right click the files in finder window search results and select quicklook.. i dunno, i do all my searches via the finder window because it's a lot more powerful than normal spotlight (search system files, custom searches, smart searches etc..)
fwiw, opt-cmmd-space is the shortcut..

Minitab statistical software. Very widely used. Windows only.

Here's another thumbs up for OneNote. Quite possibly, the sleeper app in Microsoft's Office suite.

Background sound on E-mails

Back in 2000 when I was a  WinDozzze user, I found a feature on outlook express. You could add sound to a e-mail as a background sound. Once the recipient opens it they get a special effect or a music clip running in the background & you can loop it. That would be nice feature to add to :apple: mail.

What I need is something like jdownloader for megaupload and rapidshare, but with a web interface like transmission and sabNZBd+ so I can manage my downloads from work.

Someone make it so!
