Finally was able to watch Oblivion the other day. So finally a worthy sic-fi movie of the likes of Forbidden Planet, The Matrix, and Bladerunner. Totally awesome movie, this is a must buy.

appreciate the post. i find 'if you like that, you'll like this' a very good referral method. i love the rest of the list, so will be looking forward to Oblivion.

I was planning on and will see it, but my impression is that it bombed at the theater, based on the DVD being released soon after.

Streamed it tonight and it was surprisingly good with intrigue. I hate it when the previews mislead, drawing in the action junkies with shiny baubles... my main critique is that the climax seemed flat and the music was oppressively blah.

If you're interested in dry scandinavian humour, I can highly recommend Kitchen Stories to you two. Awesome movie.

Spoiler / synopsis: "Swedish kitchen researcher in the nineteen fifties goes to Norway to explore country bachelors use of kitchen." :D

Django Unchained. Love it.

Very glad to learn that, as online reactions and thus, word-of-mouth recommendations, carry a lot more weight with me than do bloated advertising budgets.

Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, I haven't managed to see it yet, but it is one of the movies I am looking forward to viewing whenever opportunity presents itself.

I am truly humbled that such short review of such movie is worth more than the most over-hyped propaganda.

I must also confer in you that the movie does depict a bit of the bloody side of the south and of the slavery days in the south. As gruesome as that may seem, it is actually toned down from what it really was.

The movie, in my opinion, has a nice tone to it, regardless of whether a derrogative term is excessively used. I feel it compels directly to what the true spirit of history actually was in that timeframe.

I thought Django Unchained was mediocre. If you like Tarantino movies with lots of blood, you will probably like it. The music had to be the worst part of the movie. Kerry Washington (Django's love interest) also did a terrible acting job in my opinion. Samuel L Jackson did a tremendous job acting and was one of the better antagonist I have seen in a movie. I would still watch it when you get the chance because you may end up enjoying the movie. It may not meet your expectations though.

Inferno again...

Watched Argento's Inferno again last night. I finally understood the sequel to Suspiria. I still prefer Suspiria, but this had some good moments and is a good companion piece to the first film. I still can't stand the soundtrack and the cat killing scene, but otherwise it's good.

I cannot wait to get my replacement multi-region dvd player and the PAL copy of Michele Soavi's The Sect (I've been holding out for over a decade in hopes someone would release that Stateside.) I'm in the mood for "Satanic/Witchy" European horror right now.

Thanks for your thoughts on this - very welcome, for, as I commented to jav in an earlier post, I really do prefer word-of-mouth (or social fora) rather than relying on bloated budgets and advertising to tell me what is worth watching.

Re Tarantino, I have mixed feelings, to be honest. While I love spaghetti westerns, they have to be at least a little classy, with a sort of insouciance and elegance; mindless violence on its own does little for me - instead, I prefer the Baroque choreography, arid landscape, scorching heat and excellent soundtrack of a good spaghetti western. This means that I find Tarantino's work to be a bit uneven (he, himself, has used the spaghetti western analogy in an interview); when it is good, it is excellent, but some of his later work....missed the mark.

Reservoir Dogs is very good, but I would not set out to watch it again; if it was on TV, I might take a look. I loved both Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction, but nothing he has done since then has gripped me.

Unlike some of his other work, Django Unchained received some very good reviews from writers I respect, so I have made a mental note to myself to catch it when an opportunity presents itself.

Anyway, once again, thanks for posting your thoughts on the matter.

Mister Roberts. I've you have ever been in the Navy, you must see this movie.

Even if you have not been in the Navy, an outstanding film. I also recommend In Harms Way. :)

The sequel, Ensign Pulver (1964) was not nearly as good, but watchable. I really liked Walter Matthau in it. It seemed impossible for Robert Walker Jr to fill Jack Lemmon's shoes (as Ensign Pulver).

“Olympus Has Fallen” is officially the silliest, most ridiculous movie I’ve ever seen. Loved every second of it.

I have a question: Is there anyone who really likes a Will Ferrell movie where he is the primary character? I've been reading about Anchorman 2 and remembering what I saw in the first one... no way dude! ;)

I have one exception the animated film Megamind, where Ferrell completely abandons his usual onscreen persona. Great movie!

Oh, I loved Will Ferrell in the first Anchorman! That's my favorite of his movies followed by Step Brothers.
