In the last twelve hours ...

... three films:

1. You're Next
Excellent film. These modern 'horror'-type thriller/torture/paranormal films that have exploded onto the scene in recent years do not appeal at all, but purely because this got great reviews on the places I go to on Imdb to check films out(efilmcritic, Slant, etc)I decided to go see. Just a superbly well-done thriller with a female protaganist the like of which I can't recall since Aliens. Made up with it. Probably won't do great business but it will, for damn certain, become a cult classic in years to come.

2. R.I.P.D.
So, so, so much better than the trailer leads one to guess. Fantastically sharp, witty, insightful and knowing script. The two acting leads are faultless and hit just the right tone, as their characters and with the interplay with/off each other. Exciting, inventive and obviously helmed by somebody who knows exactly what they want, and, crucially, how to do it. Some seriously creative folks worked on this and I hope it doesn't die a death at the box office as it really deserves to do well.

3. World War Z
I won't say much about this as I'm pretty late to the party in only just watching it and I suspect a lot has already been said, so ... All I will add is that the reviews put me off seeing it when it came out and although it has some notable flaws I still enjoyed it immensely all the way through 'till about five minutes from the end! Yeah, that's one of the flaws but like I said, flaws 'an all, I still enjoyed it a lot.

'nuff said!

I'm watching a wonderfully written, and produced film from 1959 with superb acting and cinematography called Plan 9 From Outer Space. hahaha

I can tell your admiration for this fine example of the cinematic arts is powerful and sincere.

I too, strongly recommend this incredible (and I really mean that...it IS incredible) as a truly unique film.

:p ;)

I especially liked the guy who walked around covering half of his face with his arm and cape. :p

Just watched the Lord of the Rings with my daughter (she wanted to watch it for a while since that episode of The Big Bang Theory). Will probably watch the rest of the trilogy over the next couple of weekends.

Had to laugh when she said it was similar to Harry Potter. I said it was written a long time before Harry Potter!

The guy covering his face is a chiropractor filling in for the deceased Bela Lugosi...

During an impromptu interview upon his exit from the treatment center in 1955, Lugosi stated that he was about to go to work on a new Ed Wood film, The Ghoul Goes West. This was one of several projects proposed by Wood, including The Phantom Ghoul and Dr. Acula. With Lugosi in his famed Dracula cape, Wood shot impromptu test footage, with no storyline in mind, in front of Tor Johnson's home, a suburban graveyard and in front of Lugosi's apartment building on Carlton Way. This footage ended up in Plan 9 from Outer Space, which was mostly filmed after Lugosi's death. Wood hired Tom Mason, his wife's chiropractor, to double for Lugosi in additional shots.[18] Mason was noticeably taller and thinner than Lugosi, and had the lower half of his face covered with his cape in every shot, as Lugosi sometimes did in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

This is hilarious. And, no, I didn't know this, so thank you for telling us about it.

Why am I not surprised that you know this?

Wonderful, isn't it, what people know about and, better still, choose to share online?

Because you've read enough of my posts to know that I'm a sad, lonely old man with nothing better to do than absorb totally and completely useless trivia. :(

Ah, no, nothing could be further from the truth; and anyway, self-deprecation has limits, you know.......you are a fund of information, trivia, and fascinating footnotes to the history of cinema......

I watched A Haunted House earlier today. It's not great, but it's passable. Parody movies rarely tend to be watchable at all in my opinion, but this one wasn't too bad.

I just finished watching the Ocean's trilogy, 11, 12, & 13. I always love watching these movies with such all-star casts.

I bet the making of these three films was a total blast; a lot of fun. I would have loved to have been on the sets with these people.

...

Rented The Lords of Salem. Rob Zombie tries to channel some European filmmakers (and fails) but this was an utter snoozer about a coven of witches taking revenge on the descendant of the witchhunter who burned them at the stake in 1696. And Rob still films close ups of his wife's butt. Some things never change.

Oblivion

My son had seen it in the theaters, and didn't much like it. We decided to Redbox it last night.

What a huge disappointment. The more I think about it the more I dislike it.

I watched The Pirates Of Silicon Valley again last night. I had to get the awful taste of Jobs out of my mouth. Noah Wyle is a much more convincing Steve Jobs that Kutcher.

This was a made for television movie that blew away Jobs. It also covered Bill Gates rise to prominence too. So in less than half the time TPOSV conveys much more information about SJ.

Tim Burton's Ed Wood covers a lot of the back story behind Plan 9, including this little bit of trivia and is also well worth seeing SBG.

B

I was looking for it yesterday, but it wasn't available for free on Amazon Instant or Netflix. I can rent it though...

I'm about to start watching a Film Noir flick called Blonde Ice from the Open Culture website where you can download these classics for free.

Blonde Ice:
A society reporter keeps herself in the headlines by marrying a series of wealthy men. They all die mysteriously afterwards though.
