Sundays and Cybele. A wonderful French treasure from '62 featuring Hardy Krüger and Patricia Gozzi. Brilliant black and white picture.

...

Ironclad - holy crap an otherwise interesting siege movie became way too gory for me. I really like James Purefoy in period roles, but this would have played so much better if some of the battle gore stayed off screen.

If you can handle Braveheart style gore times 10, you might get a kick out of this. It was a fun cast and an interesting twist on post Magna Carta King John badness, but they pushed the gore way too much. I began thinking about that more than the characters and movie.

I am a practical FX geek and can roll with a lot of gore, especially since I know it is fake. Not so here...

Oh well.

I saw that film when it first came out at the art theater around the corner from my house.

Lovely film...:D

Lucky you! Yes, lovely film...I almost shed a tear or two, well I know my friend did. ;)

Strange that the movie seems to have lost its audience though. I read it even got an Academy Award (?), Only 22 (raving) reviews on imdb (I like the one inviting folks to Melbourne for a private show in a small theatre from a guy owning a 16mm print :D). At least a good DVD transfer is available since 2009.

Do you happen to know Rapture from '65 by any chance? It's one of the few and rare films also featuring the young actress of Cybele but quite expensive so I'm tinkering wether to get it or not..

Sorry, Mate, it's not ringing a bell. I don't think I have seen it, or it was so long ago I don't remember seeing it.

(Bear in mind that I can't remember breakfast...so who knows!:p)

I recently rewatched, Curse of the Golden Flower.

Excellent story and beautiful cinematography. One of my favorite movies of all times. If you don't speak Mandarin you'll have to tolerate subtitles.

The director, Zhang Yimou, also directed the smashing opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijiing Summer Games.

Thor- The Dark World- I'm a big fan of the original. This second edition not as good for a variety of reasons, lacking mystic. Was visibly dark (could of been the theater and 3D to boot). 3D seemed crappy. I did not care for the story as much, story telling seemed messy, seemed to be missing the gravity it was trying to portray, lacked focus and romance between Thor and Jane Foster. Not wowed at all.

Man of Steel 2013- This was surprisingly good although I was preparing for disappointment before viewing because it was a remake. I liked it! :)

Thor: The Dark World - I loved it. Sif kicked ass, I loved all of it, and the post credits. Only thing I didn't love Natalie Portman, but I've never been the biggest fan, but Jaime Alexander and Kat Denning made up for that.

Shoujo Mahou Madoka Magica 3: Rebellion - Intense, and a fair bit of tragedy, which is completely expected from the series. I feel so much heart ache for Homura and the rest of the girls, the ending was surreal.

I watched Paranoia earlier. With big names like Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman, I expected it to be good, but it was awful. The story never really gets interesting, and some parts are pointless or just don't make any sense at all.

"Casablanca" just came on as I type this.

What can be said that hasn't been said...great script (a work in process right up to the last frame), Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, wonderful direction by Michael Curtiz, Ingrid Bergman, terrific cinematography, Ingrid Bergman, wonderful plot, Claude Rains (Gambling...I'm shocked), Ingrid Bergman.

An absolute must see for any movie fan.

And did I mention that Ingrid Bergman was in it!?

Terminal crush on...well,,,

One of those timeless, classic movies where absolutely everything is just.......so utterly, flawlessly........perfectly......right. Including the ending.

Had a crush on her in college, just after seeing this. Maltese Falcon also carries the Film Noir Bogart vibe, an atmosphere I don't remember seeing repeated until the Star Trek Next Generation Dixon Hill episodes. ;)

I saw The Dark World today and thought it was good. Hey, these are superhero movies, I think you really have to keep that in mind. They aren't intended to compete at the Oscars. They are supposed to be fun, have lots of cool effects, and give you a good escape from reality. Mission accomplished, I say. :)

While it's possible to play superheroes as a "serious story", it only really works with certain characters (Batman being the most obvious). Marvel has decided to cast a wider net with their MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe, or Earth-199999 if you prefer), and I think it works well. I love being able to see the big, bright colored heroes, I love the over the top stories. I'm really glad that Marvel's gone this route.

With that said, I'm really excited with Marvel's agreement with Netflix; Daredevil, Power Man, Iron Fist and Jewel, all culminating in a Defenders miniseries (though, I'm annoyed they call it Defenders instead of Heroes for Hire).

Had a French animation fest last night with :

  • The Rabbi's Cat (Le Chat Du Rabbin)
  • The Illusionist (L'illusionniste)
  • The Painting (Le Tableau)
  • Tales Of The Night (Les Contes De La Nuit)

Your post prompted me to look this up as I hadn't heard anything about it yet. Wow, this looks really cool.
