I rewatched Zero Dark Thirty last night, or at least attempted to. I don't know what it is about this movie, but I cannot stay awake during it. I'm good for the first 20-30 minutes, and I'm awake for the last scenes, but I doze off for the entire middle. The same thing happened the first time I tried to watch it. :(

Streamed We're the Millers (2013). I don't really know why I liked this movie with it's implausible story about a drug dealer coerced into making a drug smuggling run from Mexico with his made up family, but I like the lead, Jason Sudeikis, character relationships, even Jennifer Aniston, and got a few chuckles out of it.

Saw The Godfather Pt. 2. was awesome, but it lacked the epic feel the first one had. Young Robert De Niro is great too, I wished i could have seen more of him.

I just saw "Gravity" and while an OK film, I was disappointed because it didn't live up to the hype. But other movies which had the hype like "Argo" were exactly as good as they were reported to be.

Tonight I will watch the Bachelor season finale and the 2nd runner up Andi supposedly had a sudden falling out with the bachelor (without any lead up to it) and left the show. It was very suspicious but I let it go as "bad editing".

And then this shows up:

With other examples showing the fake and manipulative antics of the producers of these huge shows behind the scenes I still watch sometimes. There's also garbage like Biggest Loser, Cops, People's Court, Survivor, and the entertaining Duck Dynasty but it's mostly, if not all Hollywood when we are talking about reality shows:

Actually, I think that Godfather II surpasses Godfather I; both are excellent, but, to my mind, Godfather II is that very rare case of a sequel which is superb, and which outclasses the first movie. It tells a powerful tale, very well acted; Michael's moral & narrative arc, the classic 'sell your soul' is superbly done, as is the disintegration of much of the rest of the family.

Besides, the 'Marcia Religiosa' scene is spell-binding. The US adjective 'awesome' barely does it justice.

I watched "The Act of Killing" over the weekend. It is probably the best documentary I've watched in a very long time. It isn't easy to watch, and I'm still struggling to process it all. Currently on Netflix...

I agree completely with you. Actually, I first saw this last summer, and was left simply speechless; an intelligent, superbly made, gripping, deeply disturbing and utterly brilliant documentary.

Saw Mr. Peabody with the kiddos this past weekend. It was better than I expected it to be. They threw in some good jokes for the adults as well as lots of humor for the kids.

I can second you there. It's a much better documentary than 20 Feet to Stardom ever could be.

300: Rise of an Empire - It doesn't live up to the first 300, which I enjoyed, but its still good. Despite a very superficial storyline, the visuals are superb, and there's a ton of action and gore, as expected. Eva Green is great as the ruthless Artemisia.

I liked Rise of an Empire. Looked amazing in 3d IMAX

I had to do some googling to figure out the connection (I don't pay attention to the Oscars...). It sounds like it could be an interesting documentary, but it is hard to imagine it sits above of The Act of Killing. Profoundly disturbing, riveting, revolting, brilliant, shocking...

People Like Us - Kind of sweet, but kind of boring. A guy finds out he has a step-sister, and tries to get to know her without telling her they are related.

I agree, it was completely farfetched, but really funny. I liked it as well. :)

Watched The French Connection yesterday. It was really average in my opinion, and I thought that even American Hustle (which I thought was mediocre) was more involved than this particular film. Hard to believe it won 5 oscars.

Drive

The opening getaway scene still gives me goosebumps :) I just love this film's pacing, the soundtrack & the indie-ness. Can enjoy it over and over again...

Watched Full Metal Jacket and Dr. Strangelove.

Dr. Strangelove was pretty good, but I didn't really like Full Metal Jacket. Apocalypse Now is much better than FMJ in my opinion.

I saw The Purge yesterday.

It rests on an absolutely stupid, ludicrous, fatuous, and absurd premise...which I will not real lest I spoil this gem for the reader.

Now, if you get by the unimaginably asinine premise, the movie is actually pretty much worse than the premise. The script is risible, and that's as complementary as I can manage. The acting is just bad, the direction lousy, the plot had holes through which you could drive an eighteen wheeler, cinematography forgettable...but the furniture was sort of OK.

I certainly wouldn't want to discourage anyone from watching this odiferous piece of crap...just fair warning.

Of course, what kind of review would you expect from a jerk who thinks Speilberg makes junk!:p

;) :D

All the more reason to stick to Criterion Collection.

Don't misunderstand...although I prefer the films of the 30's, 40's and some of the early 50's...I'm not averse to watching more current stuff. Action movies, slasher films, and other assorted garbage, as well as some of the occasional superior more current films are fine. I certainly don't restrict my viewing only to "good" films...my tastes are quite catholic.

But some junk is irredeemable...;)

:D

Watching Resident Evil Afterlife right now, been watching all of them this week and I'll watch Retribution later tonight.

Not much of a fan of Full Metal Jacket.

Now, but Dr Strangelove; now, that is in a very different class: this is a classy and clever British satire (and my understanding is that the character of Dr Strangelove is loosely based on a satirical reading of the character of Werner von Braun), intelligent, sharp, witty, biting and oh, so very, very good. Loved it.

.

Now, that is what I call a review! Well said, and nicely eviscerated….

Agreed, some junk is irredeemable. And agreed, too, some of the earlier movies were glorious, with stuff such as scripts, a story to tell, decent acting (often from classically trained actors, at least in the UK), cinematography and so on…...

And, yes, we are all allowed some lapses in taste. Indeed, my own personal lapses in taste can be found in spaghetti westerns; I love them. Yes, I will readily concede that they are not the sort of worthy High Art I usually try to watch. But i still love them…..

Knowing this weakness, and following a discussion on the theme of spaghetti westerns, one of my colleagues deposited a DVD of Django Unchained (which I have never managed to get to see yet) yesterday on my desk; I'll watch it over the next few days when I have a spare hour or two.

The movie was an attempt to cram all the facts into a short space of time leading to a boring experience for many. It's more of something to watch in pieces on a rental, like I did with Apollo 13.

Zero Dark Thirty was meh for me that year. Best movie for me was Killing Them Softly which I still love nearly 2 years after it was released.

I think with some editing Zero Dark Thirty could have been a great film and won the Oscar that year. The storyline, while not always clear, was interesting but I had to watch it twice. The acting was a little stiff which led everybody I know to say "meh". ;)
