I'd say that such a trip was our of their purview unless maybe they thought planning and support was so poor that her life was in obvious danger, but not if it was just a principle thing.

From what I gathered of the film, it was all of the principle that a 14-year-old girl isn't capable or responsible enough to do such a thing.

She and her father had the trip and boat all planned out quite well and the evidence of the trip proved it too. She did a magnificent job and played it safely too.

There ya go...

I just saw Stripes, which I hadn't seen since it first was released.

I recall finding it mildly amusing when I first saw it. For me, it didn't hold up and I found the direction poor, and the dialogue predictable and not particularly funny at all.

Tastes change...:)

Never liked Stripes, In The Army Now, Catch22* or Private Benjamin, but loved The Dirty Dozen, Where Eagles Dare, The Russians Are Coming, Doctor Strange Love, the terribly named- The Wackiest Ship in the Army, Father Goose and Kelly's Heroes. I may be temperamental when it comes to military/war comedies although I realize that not all of these titles are comedies. :D

*Loved the book, movie sucked.

Last night I watched Being There (1979) with Peter Sellers.

Absolutely brilliant and profoundly funny. How did I not see this movie sooner?

Actually, I think it simply may be that one becomes a fair bit more discerning as one agesin all sorts of areas, wines, movies, coffees, beer.

Agree with you re the book 'Catch 22'; brilliant, savagely funny, scatological, sharp, clever, utterly original book. However, I saw the movie years ago, and thought it quite poor; somehow, I felt it never managed to capture the spirit, or essence of the book at all.

An extremely good and thought-provoking movie. At his best, Peter Sellers was excellent.

Godzilla (2014) - Without venturing into spoiler territory, I will say that in 1 word, it's fun, and while I have mixed feelings about it, in my opinion, its still better than the last one. The good: visually, its great (the bit with the parachuters .. just awesome), and the end fight sequence was fantastic. The bad: the story is weak with quite a few illogical sequences, and I was unimpressed with Bryan Cranston's role. I also would've done the ending differently, but that's probably just me. But overall, put on your suspension-of-disbelief blinders and you'll likely have a good time. After all, its a movie about giant monsters. ;)

The Truman Show - Its been several years since I last saw this, but its still every bit as enjoyable.

Thanks for the review. It seems like I will be skipping this movie for now and wait for it to be released at my local dollar theater. After all, I have already watched TASM2 two weeks ago and I am dead set on watching X-Men DOFP on opening day next week. Count in Transformers after that and I really can't waste that much more Costco tickets :(

I think it was definitely worth watching on the big screen as the visuals were very cool, but my suspension of disbelief glasses broke part way through the movie due to the somewhat disjointed story. Only a select few scenes made me wish we had been able to make the earlier 3D show.

Definitely not Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn or even Ken Watanabe's finest work.

Really good movie. Was a little on the long side but it managed to keep my interest during a few scenes :).. My new girlfriend didn't like that to much lol

But, I would watch it again and Leo did a great job in this movie. I'm not a big fan of his so I have to give credit where it is due

I recently mentioned Sleepy Hallow in this thread, but saw it again and I wonder how many depictions of the Iron Maiden have been depicted in cinema?

Whoa! Dude! You have totally overlooked Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

There is definitely something amiss at the Gas N Go, my most excellent friend.

--with humble apologies.

tomorrow

Tomorrow I'm seeing X-Men Days of Future Past and then my last theatrical screening of Captain America The Winter Soldier (before the anxious wait for the digital and blu ray release.)

I do not have any Xpectations for X-Men. Not a fan of Singer and without Vaughn at the helm (although he did co-write this), if it's worth the very steep admission, great.

After XMen First Class, and The Wolverine (not the Origins movie), of which I liked neither, I'm a bit worried about DoFP.

The reviews looks very promising so far (92% on RT, the same score as The Avengers) and it is certainly a movie with a much bigger scale than the previous 2 X-Men movies. I have really high expectations for it, and I guess I will see for it myself tomorrow. Bummed I couldn't watch the late night showings :(

I am too, but if I like it and feel it's worth the admission, that's enough. I'm not expecting great especially since it's the same characters getting the spotlight > again.

Well, I won't complain about Fassbender getting the spotlight again. Magneto ftw!
But the film receiving the same over the top rating as The Avengers worries me. Absolutely disliked that one.

Will finally watch Assault on Precinct13 (original) this evening.

Oooh enjoy the original Assault on Precinct 13 tonight. I love that movie.

X-Men Days of Future Past: the less I say the better. Not worth the price of admission. First Class was much, much better. While McAvoy and Fassbender were good, they were nothing like they were in First Class. Even Jackman's arc was boring. If you have to see this, rent it.

Not a fan of the Avengers... (and not just because Chris Evans barely had anything to do.) All these reviews praising X-Men Days of Future Past must have seen a different film than I did.

Just saw 1936 film "Dodsworth" again. A truly brilliant, and grossly under appreciated and largely unrecognized masterpiece. John Huston and Ruth Chatterton star, and give bravura performances. Both are excellent actors, and are at their best in this film about the relationship of a mature couple. Mary Astor is also excellent in a supporting role.

The direction and script are fine...but this is the actors' film...and it is a must see for those interested in early masterpieces.

I can't recommend this film strongly enough for the film buff.

If your idea of cinematic excellence is Avatar...don't waste your time!:p

Gee, and I thought this avatar was cinematic brilliance!

Quite the contrary, I just watched X-Men: Days of Future Past and I thought it is the best Marvel superhero movie ever. I would say it is better than both The Avengers and Captain America 2, and these two are very great movies already. Not quite as good as The Dark Knight, but that is not much of a superhero movie.

This movie is just everything a superhero movie should be. It just balances humor, emotions, and actions so well that nothing felt out of place. The scenes that really stood out to me was: Quicksilver's slow motion montage in the Pentagon (in my theater, all the audience were cheering and clapping after that one), old Professor X's conversation with young Professor X to restore his hope, and the final battle in both timelines that transitions so perfectly that it becomes natural. The only gripe I have is Mystique's decision at the end, which was a little bit predictable, but don't we always know that good always rises over evil in these movies? The plot is also very complex as well, and for those that have never watched an X-Men movie before, it can be confusing (a couple of my friends were). The all-star cast really put their best performances in this one (McAvoy was impeccable as the young Xavier, and Fassbender did a great job as well). Overall, it is the perfect summer blockbuster that is both entertaining and thoughtful. Definitely worth watching, and I am even tempted to see it a second time in theaters (which I have never done before).

P.S. There is an X-Men Apocalypse teaser at the very end of the credits. Can't believe we will have to wait another two years to see what happens next :(

Saw the new Godzilla movie the other day. Quite possibly the single worst movie I've ever seen in my life. And yes, it was even worser than the other one with Matthew Broderick. This movie was so bad I was shaking my head at every scene. It was awful.
