Difference of opinion makes the world go around. Glad you liked it. :) For me it was depressing, slow, poorly acted and scripted. Okay at best. I kept looking at my phone for the time, when I do that, it's a bad sign.

I'm glad you liked it too. It just hit me every shade of wrong and I am X fan myself. I wanted to like it and I wanted to see a lot more with Bishop, Blink and Warpath - they were fun (partially because they were new characters and not the same Charles/Erik/Raven/Logan thing yet again.) I must agree about the underwhelming performances and I'd add Lawrence to that list. She was not good.

I prefer First Class. It really got the era down worked in alternate history much, much better and had a sharper script and direction.

Sorry if I sound crankier than usual... it' s not either of you. (So want Iceman's powers right now.)

Regarding XMen DoFP, I see it is directed by Brian Singer who did the first two XMen which I love and it got a 91/95% at Rotten Tomatoes. Hmm considering taking a chance on it at the theater.

I seem to recall reading that Jodie Foster had been approached to reprise the role, and, initially, was open to this idea, but didn't much care for the direction the character had been made to take in the sequel, viewing it as weakening the character, and so, declined the role.

However, I agree with Shrink; I would have liked to have seen Jodie Foster reprise that role, but, to be honest, I also share her misgivings about the direction Clarice Starling's character took in the sequel.

I am not sure that this is the character developmental arc I would have considered for Clarice Starling; it strikes me as not entirely consistent with the character of the strong but vulnerable person we knew from 'Silence of the Lambs'.

I would have liked to have seen Jodi Foster reprise the role too, of course.

I think the character Julianne Moore played was very strong and confident. She didn't exude that vulnerable trait though. To me, I wouldn't expect her to be that way after 10 years in the FBI. At first, she was fresh out of the academy and wet behind the ears. Vulnerability would be, in my eyes, synonymous with being naive and inexperienced in her case. I would expect that to have gone away with her time and experience.

That's just my opinion of course. :)

Well...clearly completely wrong.

Yup...no doubt...just wrong!

OK...maybe there's just a bit of a good point in there.:p

;)

Very good point that 10 years in the FBI would have given Clarice Starling confidence in herself and the strength to project that confidence. Actually, I had assumed that Clarice Starling's 'vulnerability' stemmed from a mixture of her lower class background (brilliantly captured by Jodie Foster) and the manner of the death of her father.

Given that she had become more comfortable, more confident, and successful in her career, to then see a book written which allowed Hannibal Lecter to deconstruct and reconstruct her is a trope (the old Pygmalion idea - which is very much a specific and deeply controlling male fantasy) is something I confess myself uneasy about, and I am not sure it is fair to Starling's character.

I know that the dilemma was to allow for some means which allowed for an acknowledgement of their shared (emotional/psychological) bond, suppressed respect, and their muted mutual empathy, while retaining each individual's character and yet allowing them each some degree of ownership of their personal moral compass.

I just finished watching The Hobbit:The Desolation of Smaug. Although it doesn't drag its feet quite as much as the first one, it still felt overly long.

I really feel like two movies (even in the 2-1/2 hour range) would’ve created a much tighter movie, with much better momentum. I recall when this project was first announced it was scoped as a duo logy, and quite a few folks think the move to a trilogy was more studio/profit than a creative decision.

Good scene...there are other scene's I liked better, but I won't mention them and spoil it for others.

Seriously....I thought the script was better in the first film...also thought Jodie Foster did a better job with the character than Julianne Moore.

Side-note/slightly-off-topic: Are you following the Hannibal TV show? It’s _outstanding_ (I’d go so far as to say it’s the best show on TV) and if you’re a fan of the source material, you get that, but with some really fantastically creative retcon’ing that keeps you guessing. Interestingly enough, the Silence/Starling properties are owned by a different studio, so while they’re headed towards Red Dragon/Hannibal, it’ll be interesting to see how they deal with the SotL material.

Side-side-note: We’ve got an original promo poster for Silence hanging in the main TV room :D

Agreed. Two movies would have been much better for the Hobbit. Making it into a trilogy was pure money grab by the studios.

Watching The Longest Day on this fine Memorial Day. I love and think it's the best WWII movie, and from my perspective believe it treats the Germans fairly. It's on AMC, too many damned commercials! :p

Major General Blumentritt (Curt Jurgens) frustrated that the Panzers will not be released in time for the invasion laments: We are living a historical moment. We are going to lose the war because the Furer has taken a sleeping pill and is not to be awoken. I wonder whose side God is on?

My other German favorites are fighter ace Pips Priller, Commander of JG26, frustrated that most of his squadron has been diverted to the Eastern front, tells his wingman: "You have excellent prospects for a long sleep."

And Werner Pluskatt who spots the invasion ships from a bunker overlooking the beach at Normandy, when asked where are the ships going? "Right at me!"

AoP13 was awesome! Love the gritty, relentless atmosphere. That scene with the girl:
Soundtrack is legendary of course.

X-Men, I'll pass then.

Got my Romero's Martin copy today - yay!

Glad you enjoy AoP13.

 Indeed the moment with the little girl. That's still a shocker to me... AoP13 is now in my top three Carpenter. The more I watch the more I like.

Enjoy Martin. It's unique among vampire films and I wish George would make another film like it (Perhaps using a different type of monster.) ' Look for a Romero cameo (he's the younger priest.)

If there's discount showings, go then. I wish I had that option when I saw it.

Well, thanks for spoiling that one. ;)

Carpenter Top3? Thing, AoP13 and Escape? Where's Halloween then? But I do agree.

Received a huge bunch of Amazon boxes yesterday..from UK and US - finally! Martin, Season of the Witch by Romero, Eraserhead by Lynch, remake of Night of the Living Dead, Cat o' Nine Tails and Suspiria by Argento (still wating for Tenebre) and some more good Fulci's plus Black Sunday by Bava - awesome! :D

Lol, my disc shelf transforms my apartment into some kind of Haunted Horror House! And it all started with Nosferatu - thx Murnau! :p

Saw the new Godzilla movie the other day. Quite possibly the single worst movie I've ever seen in my life. And yes, it was even worser than the other one with Matthew Broderick. This movie was so bad I was shaking my head at every scene. It was awful.

You haven't seen Godzilla's Revenge/All Monsters Attack, have you?

Me spoil a film? Naahhhh ;)

Capenter: yup. Those three are my top 3. Halloween, that's further down my list and I actually think his giallo-light script for the Eyes of Laura Mars is a lot more fun (definitely trashy and goofy), but that's me.

Sounds like a great haul you've got. I quite like Cat o' Nine Tails -there's one scene that still unnerves me- and it's Argento's least gory film but the story is a lot of fun. Suspiria is sensory overload and a very good adult fairy tale (I love the cinematography and music.)

Eraserhead is one I think you'll appreciate given your enjoyment of the Warhol films.

Black Sunday is a classic. Makes me wish a lot more modern horror movies were filmed in Black & White.

Season of the Witch, not one of Romero's better films but I understand what he tried to do.

Enjoy them all.

Get Smart (2008)- Enjoyable spy comedy. Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway do great jobs if you enjoy silly comedies. Sometimes laughed out loud. :)

Epic- Epic animation in this movie about good vs evil in the forest. Mostly enjoyable except the story was marred because I did not care for many of the characters- the Father, the primary villain reminded me too much of Hades in the 1997 Hercules animated Disney film, and the annoying slug, snail, and the caterpillar. Other than that, the animation was impressive. :)

Out of curiosity, have you seen the original TV series?

I watched it as a kid. Steve Carrell does a fantastic job resurrecting Maxwell Smart and I loved the dialog. Terrance Stamp is outstanding as Siegfried, but I was really disappointed there was such a brief appearance of Hymie (Patrick Warburton)

Ah, great choice. I hadn't know n there was a movie, and, in truth, had I known, my heart would have sunk anyway at the thought of the utter desecration wrought upon the original material that such a movie was likely to be.

I loved the original TV series when I saw it as a kid; it was clever and funny, with an optimistic humour that refused to take itself too seriously, yet made some very good jokes; besides, I always enjoyed that wonderful sequence at the closing credits where Maxwell Smart walked through all of those different mad doors in order to reach the secret telephone kiosk at the very end of the corridor...

That is really lovely to hear; I'll keep an eye out for it, in that case, as I really liked the TV series...

American Hustle - Finally got around to watching this. It was alright, but not as great as the reviews made it out to be. "Riotously funny"? I don't think so...

Misery - The 1990 Stephen King adaptation about a novelist and his obsessed, psychotic, biggest fan. I thought it was fantastic, and Kathy Bates played the part to perfection.

I said that too! Great liberties were taken advertising that movie. :D

Ted (2012)- Mark Walburg's magical Teddy Bear. Funny for a while but the joke soon wears off and it sounded like a Family Guy movie. :p

Wedding Crashers (2005)- Enjoyable romantic comedy with an early psycho Bradley Cooper debut and classic Vince Vaughn at his best. The problem is that once you've seen Vince Vaughn comedy, you've seen all he has to give. He plays the same guy in every comedy. Jurasic Park was an exception. ;) Will Farrell is disgustingly unfunny.

My wife and I watched the remake of Red Dawn last night. It was ok, nothing to write home about. I'm glad I was able to watch it on Amazon Prime.
