War of the Worlds (2005)- One of the finest apocalyptic scifi films. The emergence scene, and the escape from town scenes are superb, tremendous visuals, along with the camera work where it floats around the van showing the surrounding scenes, then zooming in for close ups and dialog, then back out again. The mob scene where they lose custody of their van is scary. I may not buy the ending, but this is a somber portrait of the breakdown of society based on an alien invasion.

But how was the acting? ;)

Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, adequately skilled to carry a story like this. Supporting actors were great! "Your busting my chops!" BZZZT! :D

That was my favorite tom cruise movie. He did very well; not to mention that Andy Dufresne was in it.

I think that it was pretty good! I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to. I bet King is pleased.

Nice! I enjoyed it myself. I still would prefer the original. It might be for nostalgic reasons though.

I wish King would approve of Kubricks version of The Shining

I just watched RIPD. And when I say just watched, I mean the first 20 minutes before turning it off.

----------

I really want to see the uncut version of World War Z to see if there are any real differences but seeing the movie for the first time didn't really resonate with me. Im afraid that watching the uncut/unrated version won't be any different.

I just watched the uncut version on Netflix. I didn't really notice much difference between it and the theatrical version.

Bleh. Thanks for the heads up. I guess I'll watch something else tonight. I guess I can always check HBOgo.

Kubrick's Shining was perfect, I thought. One of the creepiest movies I've ever seen.

I agree!

I wish they would make an accurate representation of the book IT but I realized some of the scenes could be extremely graphic and pretty sure illegal.

The TV mini series/movie wasn't bad tbh. I thought Tim Curry was great

An old, grizzled, and slightly psychotic Andy Dufrense. :p

I think my favorite TC movie besides Risky Business is Knight and Day just because Tom portrayed a character slightly different than his norm, plus he and Cameron Diaz had good chemistry.

I saw Knight and Day in the theaters with a few of my friends- We had intentions on seeing Inception, but it was sold out, so we saw Knight and Day instead. We laughed so hard that we all cried, and had those horrible stomach pains...what a terrific movie..

I agree. The book was fantasic, and I was really disappointed with the movie. Tim Curry was very good, but the presentation was iffy.

I'm glad that they didnt all have sex in the sewer though. Not sure what King was doing there...

So glad you knew right off the back what I was referring to.

SPOILER BELOW

Underage sewer sex, let alone group sex, had me going UHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that every single person who read that book was questioning him during that scene. That was very strange.

My wife's favorite Tom Cruise role of all time is his portrayal of Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. I must agree with her, he is quite hilarious in that movie. We both "busted a gut" with the over the top performance he gives.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning (2012)
John looks to take down Luc Deveraux after a home invasion claims his wife and daughter. The fight pits John against Andrew Scott and an army of genetically enhanced warriors; meanwhile, he must contend with a UniSol in relentless pursuit.

It's a work of art.

I don't remember the scenes from the book that would be illegal to film.

I had completely suppressed his role in Tropic Thunder. It was a complete departure for him. :)

Wouldn't the sewer scene be illegal to actually film? If i remember correctly, they were kids when they went into the sewer. Unless thats actually legal to show and im being grossed out for no reason.

Maybe I'm confused, thought I was speaking of The Shining. I only remember one child in that story and no sewer.

Oh no hahahah. I loved the shining, both book and movie.

We were referring to "IT"

I did read that King was not happy with the way that Jack was portrayed though.

I read that story but don't remember, what happened when the kids went into the sewer that could not be filmed?

SPOILERS FOR IT. DO NOT READ BELOW IF YOURE READING THE BOOK.

If I remember correctly, I believe they went into the sewer to battle penny wise. They needed to form a bond as the monster was trying to make them forget each other. They came up with the idea to have sex with each other, as that's the strongest bond they can make. Take note the kids are 10-14 years old. So it's like 6 guys and one girl.

Treasure Island (1990)- the finest rendition of this story originally broadcast as a TV movie on Turner Network, starring Charlton Heston, Christian Bale, and Oliver Reed. I didn't agree with Charlton Heston's politics, but he was one fine Long John Silver. :)

Unfortunately the only version of this movie available for viewing is a DVD copied from the VHS version, so it's low resolution viewing available online for purchase I believe, but splendid never the less. I keep hoping for a real remastered DVD, better yet a BluRay version, but I've not been holding my breath. Turner has elected to let it lay there. On this this TCM page you can vote for a real DVD version to be released and there are 8000 votes for it, I assume not enough.

I don't care if it's Beelzebub himself, I'm going to get that loaf!

Of interest the replica tall ship that was used for this movie and the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty sank off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina during Hurricane Sandy. Several crew members lost.
