I'm a sucker for cheesy, poorly made and not-so-good acting, of 1950's and 1960's sci-fi movies.

Beyond the Time Barrier (1960)
In 1960, a military test pilot is caught in a time warp that propels him to year 2024 where he finds a plague has sterilized the world's population.

Hey, it's all good. I've been known to change my mind.
<snip>
I adore Charlton as Taylor. He was real smart to bail when he did.

Thankfully, I did not pay for Guardians of the Galaxy which I just got back from. Sorry gang, that was not my cup (Beyond Ronan, Cosmo and Groot.) I won't go into the whys, but I'm glad Mantis and Jack Flag did not make this cinematic team.

There are several significant movies that I was not sure I liked when I first saw them, but then they grew on me. The first Matrix was one of them. I love that movie now.

Regarding GotG I can't believe Vin Diesel agreed to a role with a total of not 3 lines, but 3 words. :) My initial impression of this movie is so so. I did not read the comic.

I don't even remember this and I thought I had seen every cheesy movie from that time period. :)

I love classic scifi, including some of the so-bad-they're-good

These are some of my so-good-they’re good faves :D

This Island Earth
Day the Earth Stood Still
Forbidden Planet
Earth vs. the Flying Saucers
War of the Worlds

Love the Quartermass Trilogy too (using the US titles):

The Creeping Unknown
Enemy from Space
Five Million Years to Earth

Awesome! I'm going to have to look these up.

The other of your selections may be...ah...less that classics, but The Day The Earth Stood Still is not just wonderful 50s-60s sci-fi schlock.

A big, and quite famous, cult favorite...and not just for the poor SFX...with a worthwhile cast led by Michael ****** and Patricia Neil.

I think you will enjoy this one for more than just the low budget ca-ca...this one has more going for it.

Klaatu barrata nictoe....

What happened to Shrink's Law? :p

What happened to Shrink's Law? :p

I love low budget ca-ca...especially the low budget ca-ca of 50s and 60s sci-fi. I also didn't suggest that enjoying it was somehow wrong...so Shrink's Law holds...if you like it, it's fine.

Just that The Day The Earth Stood Still stands head and shoulders above the delightful ca-ca in many ways...as The Third Man stands above Gigli...but if you like Gigli...that's fine too!:D

Saw Alex Cox' Sid And Nancyyesterday featuring a young Gary Oldman. Great and extremely moving movie. Wasn't aware of the story about them / Sex Pistols and expected quite a different movie, more along the fantastic trash line of Repo Men...so this went rather the more depressing way instead

Highly recommended! From what I read not utterly historically accurate but catches the spirit of Romeo and Juliette gone punk perfectly.

Split Second (1953)
Sam Hurley, "Nation's No. 1 killer" with a cold contempt for "heroes," escapes prison with two companions and takes a mixed bag of hostages to Nevada ghost town Lost Hope City. He knows they won't be found there because an atom-bomb test is planned for next morning! Relationships shift and tension builds as Hurley keeps the others in suspense as to whether he will let them escape before bomb time.

I saw Skyfall again the other day.

It doesn't age well IMO. Casino Royale remains Craigs best outing as 007.

Also how are they going to push Craig for another two Bond movies when he was already "old" and in physical decline in this one? Which is kind of funny because the reality is that for the role he pushed himself to peak fitness :p

How can you watch these movies? I know I shouldn't judge like that but those posters are so bad :D

How you say? Easy! I'm a sucker for poorly made 1950's & 1960's sci-fi flicks with really bad acting. I'm unable to explain it, but it is a fact.

Now I also enjoy well made films of the classics too, which I view more of than these goofy ones.

For me with Guardians, it felt so forced in so many, many ways. A lot of the cutesy stuff took me clean out of the movie (particularly when it came to the villain showdown. I mean really?) But, hey, it is not my thing. It seems to be working with the target audience and I am happy for the people involved, but I don't think I'll change my mind on this one. That's fine. Difference of opinion and that. :D

And with that ^^ I'm now going to watch The Angry Red Planet (1959).
The first spaceship to Mars, presumed lost, is found in space and brought back to Earth by remote control. Only two from an initial crew of four are still alive, but one is unconscious due to an attached alien growth, while the other is traumatized, blocking out all memory of what happened. In hopes to save the unconscious crewman, the amnesiac is interrogated back into remembering. Those in charge thereby learn of the terrible dangers awaiting anyone venturing into the spooky, ruddy stillness of the very alien Martian ecosystem.

Caught most of Three Days of the Condor. Haven't seen that in awhile and I always enjoy the 70s political thrillers Robert Redford did. Interestingly, the Captain America: The Winter Soldier crew talked about what a big influence this was on them and I could clearly see a lot of Condor in CATWS. Not a bad thing.

Shame TCM did not show The Eyes of Laura Mars too last night since Faye Dunaway was the featured star. Cheesy but what a fun, Americanized nod to Argento (via John Carpenter's script.)

Ah so I was right, they are poor in quality. I thought the posters are deceiving and that the content/actual movie would be better than expected.

Yes. I can see that. I like classic movies but I haven't seen many of the ones you've watched so far. So now I've compiled a list of classic movies I want to watch thanks to you :)

To be fair, the movie The Day The Earth Stood Still may have a cheesy poster, but the movie was very well made and good to watch - not cheesy at all, as Shrink points out here.

Glad to hear you're going to view some of the far better classic films too. I'd be happy to hear what you think of them. :)

Yup, I've read Shrink's comment. I'll make sure to post my thoughts on some of the classics.

Funny. I had old scifi on my mind, and I went into Netflix and added a few to my list, including Angry Red Planet. :D

BTW, the same director also wrote Robinson Crusoe on Mars, which has a silly sounding name, but is an outstanding scifi flick (the star did a ton of TV, including Mannix and Cagney and Lacey).

I saw the Robinson Crusoe on Mars linked at IMDB as being related. I'll have to check that one out too.

Now on to something far less cheesy...Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963)
Three different stories of Italian social mores are presented. In "Adelina", unemployed Carmine Sbaratti and his wife Adelina Sbaratti survive through Adelina selling black market cigarettes on the street. They are unable to pay for the furniture they bought (which is under Adelina's name), but are able to avoid the bailiff when he comes for the money or to repossess. They come up with a longer term solution to avoid Adelina being prosecuted for non-payment, but that solution has a profound effect on the family, especially Carmine. In "Anna", Anna Molteni, the spoiled wife of a successful businessman, and an artist named Renzo are on the cusp of an affair. Anna is feeling neglected in the marriage, as her husband seems more concerned about success and money than her. But a car accident shows both Anna and Renzo if an affair with each other is really what they want. In "Mara", Mara is a prostitute who works out of her apartment. She befriends Umberto, a young man visiting his grandparents who live in the adjacent apartment, the balconies of the two apartments which are adjoined. Umberto, a seminary student, seems to be attracted to Mara as a woman without really knowing what she does. Umberto's grandmother, who knows what Mara does, believes Umberto's seeming romantic infatuation with Mara will be his downfall. As Mara and Umberto's grandmother ultimately join forces to get Umberto to do the right thing in life, Augusto Rusconi, one of Mara's regular clients who is in town from Bologna, does whatever he can to get Umberto's family issues out of the way so that he can get on with his own wants with Mara.

I remember that and the mouse-spider thingy. Someone got eaten too which always gives me shivers of horror.

If watching old sci-fi/monster movies try The Giant Behemoth, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, The Thing From Another World, The Tingler, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Caltiki, The Immortal Monster (watched with a coat over my head), Gorgo, Invaders From Mars and Konga. :)

I really like Three Days of The Condor, book and movie.
