I watched Hansel and Gretel:Witch Hunters. Good cast, decent special effects, I'm just not sure there was a plot buried in there.

I was also mostly just annoyed with Gemma Arterton. Yes, she wore tight black leather pants, but that was about it.

Watched Europa Report last night. There isn't much to say. The movie was a bit lacking, in my opinion. I like space movies, but this one was pretty boring to me. I know what they were going for, I just think it could have been directed better.

Think I will check out Draft Day and Blue Jasmin, along with other suggestions in this thread. I've been having a hard time finding decent movies lately.

The Double - I really enjoyed this one, in a weird way. Reminded me of an 80's film with the sound work and cinematography. I may need to re-watch to fully understand it.

Might go see I Origins tonight. Looks right up my alley.

Yes I've been on an indie kick lately.

Blue Jasmine- quality movie, outstanding performance, thoroughly depressing. :)

I know, holy hell, even with Woody’s "nihilist-lite” material, there’s usually a slight uptick towards the end, but jeebus.

Side note 1: Cate Blanchett is brilliant and she also such a _stunning_ woman - she’s got that non-traditional beauty I find really mesmerizing

Side note 2: we just finished the 3rd season of Boardwalk Empire, where Bobby Cannavale was featured, wow, what a performance (he was the Emmy for it in 2013).

Can anyone recommend me a movie tomorrow. My options are pretty sparse for tomorrow. Already have planned what my next week movie will be (the giver. super stoked).

So right now, its between hercules and lucy. While people here seem to really dislike lucy, metacritic and RT gave lucy a passable 60+. Hercules didn't do as well on Metacritic. Any advice?

I'd see guardians. But as a second choice, I would see Lucy.

La baie des anges (1963)
Jean is a clerk in a bank. His colleague Caron is a gambler and gives him the virus. In the casinos, Jean meets Jackie. Their love affair will follow their luck at the roulette.

Mad Max - Ahhh, Hugh Keays-Bryne stole the movie as Toecutter. He'll be an utter treat as Immortan Joe in Mad Max Fury Road. Here's hoping he and Tom Hardy square off at least once.

I haven't seen the original MM films in decades (wasn't much of a Gibson fan prior to Passion of the Christ and Mel's subsequent melt-down), but this first MM film holds up well. This could be my blkesploitation-loving self talking, but I dug it. The lack of people and cities adds to the not quite post apocalyptic atmosphere of the film. I also liked that the brutal stuff was left to your imagination.

I just don't see how it can be a decent Mad Max without Bruce Spence (yeah, even now, I don't have much appreciation for the original, but The Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome struck a nerve with me.

I did not recognize Hugh Keays-Bryne, but looking him up, I remembered him on Farscape. Is it okay to hope he totally breaks out with whoop-azzzz against Tom Hardy?

Manhattan Melodrama (1934)
The friendship between two orphans endures even though they grow up on opposite sides of the law and fall in love with the same woman.

And, as told to me by a friend...
It’s real claim to fame was that it was the film John Dillinger went to see at the Biograph Theater in Chicago exiting which he was killed by the FBI squad led by Melvin Purvis.

There were two movies playing near where Dllinger was staying…a Shirley Temple film at the Marlborough Theater, and “Manhattan Melodrama” at the Biograph. The Feds figured he’d go for the crime film rather than the Shirley Temple film (brilliant deduction!), especially since one of the stars was Myrna Loy, a favorite of Dillinger.

Glad you dig him miller, and forgive my crank, but I loathe Bruce Spence in RW and BT. I respect the original MM trilogy (well okay through the first half of BT) but the villains and support cast in 2 and 3 were so utterly beyond cartoony they still kick me clean out of those films. I love me some schlock, but this is a sticking point, and a strong factor why I prefer the first to the latter two.

I'll have to look up HK-B on Farscape, I haven't seen that in eons. Sure, we can hope HK-B opens up a huge gasoline tanker of whoop azzzz on Hardy (who I like btw.)

Went to see I Origins by myself. Ended up being the only person in the theater. I liked it.

I can't remember the last time I've been to the movie theater but the ticket price was $4. Ha!

Virtue (1932)
A relationship gradually develops between a savvy New York street girl and a good-hearted cab driver--who first meet when she stiffs him for the fare--but other matters keep getting in their way, including financial problems and a murder.

Just watched Red Tails on Netflix. Utterly useless film with some of the most ****** dialogue I've ever encountered. And the cutting was horrible, many times where I sat and expected some more from a scene, they make this ultrafast cut to something different, instead of taking it to the edge and finishing the job.

Bronson > excellent movie with a great perf by Tom Hardy, but I hated it. It felt very A Clockwork Orange which I am not a fan of. And Nicholas W Rehn directing, I might dig Mads Mikkelsen, but not Nicholas. I'm glad Hardy is starting to step away from playing criminals (although not much...), I hope he does more of that in the future.

The Road Warrior > again. Been a very long time and I finally recognized the classic western elements in the villains (the punkers were the stand-ins for Native Americas ambushing the 'guzzoline' wagon train), while I enjoy Max and the car chases, the villains and the majority of the support cast make this hard for me to fully get into.
