Bronson > excellent movie with a great perf by Tom Hardy, but I hated it. It felt very A Clockwork Orange which I am not a fan of. And Nicholas W Rehn directing, I might dig Mads Mikkelsen, but not Nicholas. I'm glad Hardy is starting to step away from playing criminals (although not much...), I hope he does more of that in the future.

The Road Warrior > again. Been a very long time and I finally recognized the classic western elements in the villains (the punkers were the stand-ins for Native Americas ambushing the 'guzzoline' wagon train), while I enjoy Max and the car chases, the villains and the majority of the support cast make this hard for me to fully get into.

I like Tom Hardy a lot in Inception where he played a good guy, so I know he has it in him. ;)

So this weekend was a little busy, but I did get a chance to finally see Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket. I'm glad I finally saw it; Luke Wilson is a good actor, I think. I'm not sure why his brother, Owen, has so much more spotlight. Anyway, it was great to see Wes' debut film, finally. All I have left to see from his collection is The Royal Tennebaums. But tonight, I'm going to watch the Coen Brother's Inside Lleywn Davis.

Can you explain that a bit? Not sure I can follow you. Liked Bronson myself, but not a movie I'd watch multiple times. Excellent soundtrack though! Where's your connection to Clockwork? Why do you say it's excellent but hate it? Questions I'd like to have some answers for! :D

Didn't remember Hardy being in Inception either - but that was a movie to fall asleep in imo, so he should better stick to more complex and intersting characters. :p

We got free tickets for Dawn of the Apes, good popcorn flic. Pity they had to go seemingly mainstream with it because the possibilities for a great film were right there. But no, let's rather not use all the good stuff and setups and go simplify it as much as possible. Would love to see a heavily edited - more radical - cut from it. Wasted potential imo! Also great use of cgi but 3d still doesn't convince me (although there are some amazing scenes) one bit.

A Streetcar Named Desire (1951)
Disturbed Blanche DuBois moves in with her sister in New Orleans and is tormented by her brutish brother-in-law while her reality crumbles around her.

Clockwork seemed overly forced in the violence department, a purposeful look at us (I read the novel eons ago so I've probably forgotten most things) and Malcolm was grating. You could tell it was staged and if that's what Kubrick intended, well, good on him.

And while I understand the way Bronson was filmed: his violence is his alter ego and he wants attention (the 4th wall on the stage moments) despite the really good script and fine acting job, it just annoyed the hell out of me in that it had that same wink, wink forced feeling of Clockwork (along with the violence stuff being forced rather than naturally occurring.) I may not like Bronson, but I can recognize a good script and acting job in spite of those choices. I am so glad Refn has apparently given up on Logan's Run because he would have destroyed it.

I'm looking forward to seeing Hardy in Child 44 and, of course, Mad Max Fury Road.

Too bad about ...Apes, but at least it was free.

I rewatched Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome last night again for the first time in eons. First 45 minutes are fun, after that wow, it felt like Mel was there for a paycheck and little else (Not that I blame him.) I understand there were two directors and two different movies going on there, it boggles my mind how off the ranch it went*. Future revisits will see me shutting this off once Max goes 'gulag'.

*Felt like a mix of El Topo-lite and Lord of the Flies without the bad parts. :D

I might finally see Guardians of the Galaxy this Friday.

Thank's for the reply! Not to be misunderstood, I think your Clowork call was very interesting, so that's why I asked. I do agree that both movies are extremely comical, but that's a legit choice of way of presentation/style. You can count me into the Kubrick-lovers camp, so I'm very positive this choice was 100% intentional. So you can like it or not but that seems to me like a mere question about taste. I do think Clockwork is head and shoulders above Bronson though. Do you know Pusher from Winding-Refn? That is a great one! I do like Drive a lot, haven't seen Only God Forbids but will get it as soon as the Blu costs less then 10 bucks.

Have you seen ...Apes? I was just ranting because I actually liked it in a lot of ways but the writer's messed the whole thing up at the end imho - had one of the very best 'villains' in a mainstream action movie I've seen in a very long time - you know, where they actually have a believable motive for their actions. Could have been so much more.. *sigh*

:D

Also, because the theatre got actually rented for that corporate viewing (+ guest) yesterday with everybody getting a free drink and nachos: you know what I really can't stand? Folks letting their trash at the seat/on the floor afterwards. Really irks me. You know what? Everybody did that except us! Everybody! Unbelievable...

...to think those are your fellow co-workers*..lol

We saw GOTG this past weekend, had a fantastic time!

Nice introduction of the “cosmic” parts of the Marvel Universe, some spectacular set pieces - I kind of had moments of awe that recalled the original Star Wars movies. I disagree about the action scenes, I thought they were fun and kinetic while being easily followed vs. something like Transformers which is a frenzy of seizure inducing CGI noise.

I can sit around and enjoy, and talk at length about film theory, directors like Kurasawa, Malick, Kazan, Welles, and while I think some “popcorn” flicks like Transformers are just craptacular, this was fun, clever, funny, well executed all around.

Last night I finished watching We're the Millers. I wasn't expecting much. It turns out, it was a pretty funny mostly light hearted comedy.

Although I felt like the premise of the storyline was a little forced, it still worked okay.

The ongoing interplay between the RV'ers was a little uncomfortable, but I'm sure that was the desired outcome, kinda like all the "misunderstandings" that were the basis of each episode of "Three's Company".

Hi again,

Not a W-Refn fan at all. Valhalla Rising confirmed that. And since Pusher and the like aren't my taste, I skipped. I took a chance with Bronson because I like Hardy and it looked like fun in the sense of whacked anyway.

Yes, Kubrick is the better director and one whom I'd watch from time to time.
Again, not my taste, but at least I can watch a Kubrick here or there and not get annoyed by it. So no more NW-R for me.

I'm not a fan of noir or crime stuff; giallos are different for me anyway, as they always seem so darn surreal/take whether they're written/shot that way or not.

...Apes nope. I'm an Apes purist all the way. I'm glad you kind of liked it though.

Messy theatres are no fun, but we've got the bigger problem of noisy/texting whatevers in the theatres here. As long as I'm not stuck to the seat or the floor, and I can hear/see the film, I'm golden.

Hi again,

So I’m curious.

You’ve indicated you don’t like Nicolas Refn and didn’t like Valhalla Rising or Bronson - and are only like warm on Kubrick, and didn’t like A Clockwork Orange - and you’re not a fan of noir or the “crime” genre (so no Godfather, Goodfellas, M, Sunset Boulevard) - and you didn’t like The Road Warrior.

Can you name some films you do like? Any particular genre? Specific directors?

I can definitely get behind this. We generally don’t go to the theater much, but if we do, we try to be strategic about when (and where we sit), and I definitely wouldn’t put up with people wrecking the experience.

Sure. Genres: westerns, SF, some fantasy, horror (especially those made in Italy in the 60s, 70s and early 80s), some historical dramas, drive in schlock (Bikesplotation etc.) John Carpenter, George Miller (I love the first Mad Max, elements of Road Warrior and Beyond Thunderdome and some of his kids movies too), Sydney Pollack, Clint Eastwood, Zhang Yimou, Dario Argento, Sergio Martino, George Romero, etc. I will see a film in a genre I don’t like if I like the actor or story looks interesting (hence Bronson and Child 44.)

I will be the first to admit my taste often contradicts itself, but, hey, no biggie. I know what I like and I know what I do not like.

I like to escape, but if a character/s and/or story element doesn’t click with me, I have a hard time getting through the film (hence my issues with the Road Warrior, a film I would otherwise love if it was just Bruce Spence or one or two cheesy villains, not both.)

This gal went absolutely bonkers over Captain America The Winter Soldier. I loved that storyline in the comics, but think the movie improved upon the villains greatly. Can’t wait to see that again next week for time # 15 (yes, 15.) If you had to pick a term for me, besides picky, it would be monster kid. :D

Agreed, movies are too expensive to be putting up with people who aren't there to see them.

So. Last night I watched a very strange movie. I watched "Antichrist" by Lars Von Trier. My applause to the actors...that must have been tough to perform. I genuinely felt very uneasy with this film, and actually had to turn my head at some points. Very well done film, but it was very hard to swallow.

kazmac, no franco in dawn of the apes!! can't stand him either.

cgi apes are cgi but boy - they looked terrific in anything not being a close-up! i still think you should give it a look someday.
i haven't seen the sequel but own the original on blu and really enjoy it - despite heston ;)

waiting for winter soldier to be released as well as days of the future (or whatever it's called). saw the latest wolverine on the telly last weekend and quite liked it. pondering wheter to get the expensive extendet cut or not.

LOL Heston. My mom still adores him, so by default, I like his 50s and 60s stuff. He's only in the sequel for a few minutes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes is hilarious if you want to see how bad that series tanked in just one film. That said, I like James Franciscus in the not-quite-Heston-role.

Wolverine extended cut... I'd say skip that. It was good but ultimately it did not do much to make a good film even better.

Watched Escape From New York on cable again last night. Despite the commercials every second scene, it does not dampen how much I still love that movie.

Hopefully off to see Guardians tomorrow, if the theatre accepts my freebie pass.

Freebie-pass = sneaking through backdoor? :)

Thanks, will skip the extended cut then. (In reality I will get it in some years since I like to own/collect good Marvel movies...gotta be honest here :D)

You don't have Escape From New York? Shame on you I say! I stopped watching quality movies on the telly long ago because I absolutely hated commercials (and the German dub) - pay tv (which I don't have to pay for :D) or DVD/Blu for me. Matter of finances though of course - but for someone who saw Cap II fifteen times, money shouldn't be a problem...or was that freebie pass too? :p

HAHA, think we spoke of different things. Wasn't James Franco in the Apes reboot? I thought that was one of your reasons not to watch Dawn of the Apes ... and lol, I thought Heston played the original (and James Fransicus being the 'real' name of James Franco, lol). They could be brothers!

Thanks for the nice reply!

Funny, it looks like we have quite a few common film interests, even though I would’ve suspected the opposite based on your earlier post - probably an effect of “my taste often contradicts itself” :)

Wow, yeah, you are definitely a Captain America superfan. I mean, Chris Evans is pretty hunky ... :D

I love Charlton Heston in PotA. And see he was smart to get out when he did. :)

Took my granddaughter to see Guardians of the Galaxy.

Raccoon with rocket launcher, it doen't get better than that.:p

Nice :)

My little girl wants the Disney Infinity GOTG set, even though she didn’t see it. I guess she’s got enough exposure from the ads.

“Dad, you can be the tree guy because he’s tall and nice, and I’ll be the green girl because she kicks butt” :D

Hey, it's all good. I've been known to change my mind too.

I love the Winter Soldier character and the actor playing him is fabulous (and point three, he's cute, but he nailed both sides of that character so amazingly well). Evans is terrific as Cap, I will definitely miss him once he's gone.

Oh geez, my bad.

I got a free pass from work. I know folks who sneak in the back but I always go legit for movies.

Oh, I own Escape From New York, I have the special edition set MGM released 11 years ago in Carpenter's last bid to make a property out of Snake Plissken. I just no longer own every format (v.h.s., laser disc and all the dvd versions.) I'm not keen on pay telly either, but whenever that movie is on, I stop the world.

Cap = many times were freebies (coworkers all wanted to go), free passes and cheaper tickets. I am already hoarding free passes for Mad Max Fury Road and making plans to see that at discount times often. At nearly $15 a pop for just a regular movie now, there's no way I could afford seeing a film that many times at full price any more. Glad you want to own many Marvels.

Yup, the current James Franco was in the Apes reboot.

James Fransciscus was an actor in the 60s and 70s. He was in Argento's Cat o' Nine Tails (Karl Malden's cohort, Giordani.) I start rambling certain 60s and 70s actors names...it is easy to get confused especially since both of these gents were in Apes films.

I love Charlton Heston in PotA. And see he was smart to get out when he did. :)

I adore Charlton as Taylor. He was real smart to bail when he did.

Thankfully, I did not pay for Guardians of the Galaxy which I just got back from. Sorry gang, that was not my cup (Beyond Ronan, Cosmo and Groot.) I won't go into the whys, but I'm glad Mantis and Jack Flag did not make this cinematic team.
