Don't forget Laputa Castle in the Sky and Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. For yourself I suggest you take a look at Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbors the Yamadas.

LOL, I never even considered the dog. I ran through all the characters in my head going "Nope, not a scotsman..."

I loved Curse of the Were-Rabbit, but I think my favorite was Flushed Away

I haven't seen Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, My Neighbors the Yamadas, or Flushed Away, so thanks! I'm putting them on my list immediately.

I'd forgotten about Laputa Castle in the Sky, good one. I love the crazy characters.

So what did you think?

I qued it up last night on Netflix and was surprised it was labeled the restored version and was approximately 2hr 20min. It was late so, I decided to put it off till a later date.

However I did watch the introduction which was very interesting in that the Movie had been substantially shortened after release, but a mostly complete version was found in of all places Buenes Aires, as The Boys From Brasil popped into my head... ;) (This is a German film.) And from that the movie was mostly restored.

Bit of a Movie marathon today.

Byzantium. Quite a poor vampire type film, give it a wide birth.

Space Jam. Came across this with my daughter who enjoyed it (she hadn't seen it before). She had no idea who Michael Jordan was (or the other basketball players). But I guess it's a bit dated now, and US sports stars are generally not well known outside the US. Thinking about it, I can't name one current US sports player!

The Bourne Legacy. Not as good as the original, but watchable.

Gone Girl - meh, was expecting much more since everybody was praising it so much. Average, would not watch a second time.

Not a movie, but oh boy! Just started Homeland and we watched the complete first season in about two days..can't get it out of my mind. Sad thing is, when we finished last night I checked on some news sites and learned about the terrorist attack in Kopenhagen.

Metropolis Summary/Spoilers

Metropolis (1927)-
Ok, just watched 2 hrs and 26min of it. Interesting, all most fell asleep, but then lots of action. ;) I love how in silent movies because they can't speak, actors really lay on the body language in melodramatic fashion. It may or may not be your cup of tea.

5.jpg

Synopsis-
As far as the story set in the future (for 1927), you have the poor downtrodden workers in the basement and the fat cats up stairs. There is a spiritual woman, kind of like a Jesus figure who preaches (with a bunch of crosses behind her) to the regular Joes. But the ruler of the city becomes aware of her and conveniently this scientist creates a robot which he can make look like a person. The leader of the city wants him to make the robot look like the woman so the robot will replace her an incite the workers to violence so he can use violence back on them... I think, at least they mention that. The story gets kind of muddled after that as the robot is really working for the scientist and while inciting the workers, she is also busy up stairs inciting lustful activities among the elite. The scientist does not like the ruler and I think his plan is to cause a general breakdown of society, which kind of happens. The main focus of the story is the Son of the Leader who discovers there are downtrodden workers, walks in their shoes, and then helps pick up the pieces afterwords, kind of a simplistic conclusion.

This thread is not posted in PRSI, so I'm requesting any comments remain measured- I noticed what I think is a Star of David visible in the scientist's location, unless that is a different star with occult symbolism? Don't know if this is some kind of subliminal message or not, seeing as how this movie was made in Germany. It's in the above picture, with the scientist who is one of the bad guys in this film.

update: Added more info on the Star of David question over in this thread: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=20716967#post20716967

Safety Last! (1923) – The Circus (1928)

So what did you think?.

On the chance you're a fan of late replies: considering its length is 2.5 hours, I definitely felt fatigued in certain areas. It was a masterpiece as far as choreography and technology goes—there were a few shots of intricate, moving models depicting the metropolis, and the multiple exposures used to convey confusion and create otherwise impossible scenes were neat. It was nice to see an integral, contributory female character, and robot-people-hybrid things have been a favorite of mine since watching The Terminator. It's safe to say that I was pretty freaking pleased with Metropolis.

I liked it, although it was on the long side. :)

I watched The General (1926)- With Buster Keaton. I liked Buster and the train, but felt that the music was overbearing. I also noticed that there was a Harold Lloyd movie available to watch for free on Amazon Prime, but it was not Safety Last.

I saw Kingsmen Secret Service this weekend. Pretty good movie-- that scene in the church was unreal--- I have no clue how they filmed that. Very impressive.

Please do and let us know if you liked them. The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is another little Studio Ghibli gem you can put on your list.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Isao Takahata's first film in fourteen years, and very likely his last. It's also one of his finest. A work of stunning minimalism, subtle complexity and aching beauty, it's a magnificently animated, sincerely penned masterpiece that defies the demands of the masses with a deceptively simple 10th century canvas that puts most modern CG-animated films to shame.

Check these out too :

  • The Garden of Words
  • Children Who Chase Lost Voices
  • Voices of A Distant Star
  • The Place Promised in Our Early Days
  • 5 Centimeters per Second
  • Origin: Spirits of the Past
  • Only Yesterday
  • Whisper of the Heart
  • A Letter to Momo

I just watched Lucy last night, I really liked that one too for some reason. These types of movies are generally not my thing but both will be watched again.

Just watched Lucy (2014). Maybe my entertainment standards are low based on some of the comments made about it in this thread, but I thought this movie was intriquing and entertaining. :p However the climax at the very end other than omnipotent, was slightly anti-climatic. I hope there is a sequel. The movie was a financial success ( $458 million against a budget of $40 million) so it's possible. :):)

The movie seemed interesting, I haven't watched it yet though. I think I still will (despite the negative comments). I even enjoy bad movies if they're so bad they're good.

Just watched Independence day for the umpteenth time. Can't believe that film is nearly 20 years old.

I enjoy that movie but thought some of the lines were corny.

This won't qualify as a bad movie IMO. :)

I watched John Wick last night. The movie was decent, but I am happy I didn't spend the $$ at the theaters for this or brought my wife (she was out of the house last night).

Plot was razor thin and lacked character development. It just Keanu Reeves shooting people because the son of a russian mobster stole his car and killed his dog.

I believe this movie was quite popular and there's talk of a sequel.
