Is it supposed to be a thriller or a mystery who-done-it?

Gone Girl is a bit of both with a very effective creepy vibe - - though I really "enjoyed" it, I highly recommend you don't see it with someone you love.

That reminds me of when I went on a first date to see Straw Dogs with a rape scene.

A young American and his English wife come to rural England and face increasingly vicious local harassment.

I watched "The Rabbi's Cat" last night, recommended to me earlier in this thread. (Thank you!!) It was terrific! Wonderful story and gorgeous, loose drawing-style for the animation. The story is initially set in 1920's Algiers, with a journey by Citroen semi-track to sub-Saharan Africa with an unlikely band of adventurers searching for lost Jerusalem in Ethiopia. The landscapes are so beautifully drawn, I would watch it again just to see Algiers & the Mediterranean coast even if the story wasn't as strong as it is. Very interesting characters. The film-makers also take a swipe at Tintin & Snowy in the Congo, and Tintin doesn't come off too well. The theological arguments between Rabbi & cat are very funny. So much heart.

Yes, I really loved the animation! The narrative structure is more of a loosely knitted together string of vignettes than a single arc, which seems to be something some people have disliked about the movie. Well, I enjoyed the whole thing, so I'm glad someone else did too.:)

I know what you mean regarding the narrative structure, it was noticeable at first but I accepted it as in the nature of the cat, as most of the movie was from his perspective.

Thank you again, because I definitely enjoyed this movie!

I watched Dracula the untold story last night.

It was decent, I enjoyed it. I think they made Vlad the impaler too likable, too human. History has painted the man a little darker and evil. Yet I don't go to the movies for accurate historic portrayals - especially when it comes to vampire movies :)

She Wore A Yellow Ribbon (1949)- The second installment of the classic John Ford Calvary Trilogy. (Fort Apache, Rio Grande) Filmed in Monument Valley. John Wayne, a young Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., John Agar, and Victor McLaglen, a famous Scottish character actor featured in several John Ford movies playing an Scottish soldier, although until I looked it up assumed he was Irish. Character name: Quincannon. :) Enjoyable character portrayals. :)

A Walk Among The Tomb Stones (2014)- Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens. A drug dealer hires a private eye to find out who abducted and killed his wife. Felt gritty, but the ending was just ok. And Dan Stevens, late of Downton Abbey did a decent job as the NY city based drug dealer.

Just out from Kingsman (excellent) at the cinema quick break for food then following it up with Shaun the Sheep (can't resist anything from Aardman Animations)

Saw Jupiter Ascending last night. It was much better than I thought it would be. The plot actually has an interesting premise. Of course there were lots of special effects.

Yeah it was a visual stunner for sure. The worst thing about the movie was Mila Kunis, her acting was entirely flat. The film has heavy Dune and Flash Gordon influences. It will make money with its pg-13 rating but that's its biggest flaw, it's made for kids pretty much.

(Yay Shaun the Sheep!)

I watched "The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec" 2010, directed by Luc Besson & featuring Louise Bourgoin who was fabulous. --Can't imagine a better Adèle, particularly her disguises when she attempts to break the professor out of prison. It's based on a French cartoon by Jacque Tardi and this was supposed to be the first part of a movie trilogy. (Keeping my fingers crossed but have low expectations for parts 2 & 3 since the first was released in 2010.)

It had everything I enjoy in a movie: adventure, a pterodactyl, humor, a Scotty, and convivial mummies. It's on my "Must Watch Again" list.

I watched the French version with English subtitles on Netflix, which was great. So caught up in it that I didn't even notice I was reading subtitles. I read comments afterward which said the dubbed version sucked compared to the subtitled one. --Just a heads' up.

Shaun the Sheep is wonderful; well worth taking the time to catch it in a theatre if you like that sort of thing

hadn't realised Adele Blanc-Sec was on Netflix cheers for the heads up I'll be glued to that one tomorrow :)

Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini in The Drop. Noomi Rapace is excellent. Supporting actors great. These people can keep your eyes riveted in what could have been an ordinary drama about some tough guys and tough circumstances. Matthias Schoenaerts plays unbalanced thug that uncomfortably frightens just for the potential to go wrong.

On my list to see...

I also really enjoyed Jupiter Ascending - - it's a full-on space opera (which is unfortunately out of fashion at the moment). However, if you like complex, original science fiction spun with a melodramatic story, then don't let the naysayers stop you from seeing this one on the big screen. My one complaint is that it is too short. This really should have been a trilogy to give time to building all the characters' back stories and to expand on the elaborate political and cultural histories of the alien cultures. I also especially enjoyed the classic orchestral score instead of the pop song soundtrack for a change. Yep, this one's yet another underrated entry in the Wachowski filmography - - highly recommended.

P.S.: Keep your eyes open for the Terry Gilliam cameo!

Jupiter Ascending is getting panned everywhere. Is it really good?

Hmm, it's getting a 50% at Rotten Tomatoes, half the audience likes it. I may have to take a chance. ;) How would you compare it to Guardians of the Galaxy? That movie did not strike a chord with me.

If anything will really get me excited for space opera, that will be Honor Harrington. This link speaks of the progress being made on the movie, the comic, and the game, including a decision to dump the first screenplay which was going to be the first book, Basilisk Station. They thought that was not going to be the best story- not enough action, (the book focuses mostly on her crew building with an explosive ending), to roll out as an introduction to what they hope is a successful franchise. Right now plans are to focus on the second book, Honor of the Queen, where she is sent to a planet of religious fundamentalists in conflict with a violent splinter group. I agree with that decision, and I hate getting excited about it. Don't want to be dissapointed. However if they can portray space based fleet combat, they way they did in the books it will knock my socks off again! :) It's going to take real iconic vision for this to live up to my expectations.

I thought it was fun and entertaining which is really the only standard I have when it comes to seeing a movie. The visuals and special effects will definitely be better on the big screen as opposed to waiting and watching at home. As far as comparing it to Guardians of the Galaxy I would say the movies have very different tones. There is not as much comedy in Jupiter Ascending and it's not meant to be "just plain fun" which is how I would describe Guardians.

With Jupiter Ascending's box office performance and the current fashion for superhero product rather than epic space operas, I'm not going to be buying advance tickets antime soon (though the Wachowski's do seem to be able to talk their way into big budgets despite their recent box office performance). Besides, I would have liked all the content in this one movie to be divided across three films - - it was jam packed with imagination. Though I would also like to see another trilogy on the future prospects of Jupiter Jones in her new role on Earth too!

Jupiter Rising (2015)- Ok, I saw it, had not been to the movies recently, so what the heck. I can be critical, to summarize, wait for it to stream, lol.

Some enjoyable iconic characters, an interesting premise, cool ships, cool bees, some impressive visuals, big screen frantic CGI action, too frantic and too repetitive feeling at times, a lot of arms held out "we're gonna punch through!" moments, the music score was pretty bad, more like Walmart, than John Williams that detracted from the action, story telling was uneven, a silly bureaucratic sequence. Overall, unsatisfying if you looking for a memorable experience. Fingers crossed for Honor Harrington in two years. :)
