Metropolis (1927)

o-METROPOLIS-POSTER-900.jpg

Planned for this week and weekend:

1) John Wick
2) The Judge
3) Birdman
4) Big Hero 6

Looking forward to "Chappie" when it hits the cinema's here in Belgium.
After "District 9" and "Elysium", the tandem Neill Blomkamp and Sharito Copley can't do anything wrong with me.

I agree with you completely on District 9, but Elysium was one of my biggest movie disappointments of 2013.

Sharito Copley as Agent Kruger and William Fichtner as Industrial John Carlyle stole the show.

Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Alice Braga performances were indeed 'blank', but I liked the atmosphere and visuals of the movie.

This has been in my Netflix que for a couple of years. I should watch it.

I'm sort of interested in Birdman, but wondering how close it is to Black Swan? ;) Saw a preview for Chappie, looks interesting , but hate it when they show the entire movie in 2 min. :(

I can tell you by next Monday what I found of Birdman, but that doesn't guarantee that you will have the same experience.
The movie reviews are good in the papers and magazines here, not the best but a solid second place in the Top 5 of movies to see at this moment.

I personally think that Birdman is just a movie that you have to see for yourself to make up your mind about it. An "educated guess" if you can rent it at home instead of seeing it at a movie complex.

I admired Birdman, but I didn't enjoy it.

Of interest at Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a 92% and viewers 84%. That's pretty high, but I'll stream it with tepredation. ;)

I felt Birdman had great performances but there was an element of 'performances for the sake of performing' rather than driving that much of a story forward.

Worth watching? Yes, though I saw it in cinema where I make a point of never leaving early; it's one of those movies where I'm not sure I'd have lasted the course streaming it (just too many options to hit pause and go do something else rather than get over the hump)

started with The Extraordinary Adventures of Adèle Blanc-Sec (thanks again to CG) spotted Netflix has Les Visiteurs which I havent seen in years ....soooo plan is to stick with French films for the rest of the night have Les Vis as the the second watch and then finish off with Tell No One

12 Monkeys (1995)- Intriquing only like time travel movies can be, this one is especially well done. I'd say this movie is why Brad Pit is a star.

Just finished a very long anime called The Wind Rises.
It was my daughters choice, and she is made about all things Japaniese.

I had a couple of Friday afternoons spare so saw Ex Machina last week, and Kingsman: The Secret Service today.

Ex Machina was interesting enough, and aesthetically quite cool. Kingsman on the other hand was awesome if like me, you thought the original Kick Ass was great. It had the same vibe- slightly unhinged, super violent, yet enjoyable choreography, and enough humour to keep you engaged. The reviews on it were surprisingly mixed, I saw them afterwards.

I guess it isn't for everyone :p

Fifth Element (1997)- I got on a Bruce Willis kick, plus Mila Jovovich! A movie that does not take itself too seriously, as long as you can handle the muppets. Chris Tucker is a wild man. I did not care for this the first time I saw it, but it has grown on me. :)

Ex Machina not in US until April. I think Kingsman just opened. I'll stream that.

Came across this on cable. Very eye opening, especially for someone not from this country. Interesting how they go back to before the gangs emerged as they are today.

Of the few Anime films I've seen this one and Up on Poppy Hill) I think it's safe to say I'm not really a fan. Japanese subtitles made it hard work as well.
However my daughter was positively beaming all the way through.

Open to any suggestions of similar films I can get on DVD if anybody knows Anime films.

(Yay Shaun the Sheep!)

It had everything I enjoy in a movie: adventure, a pterodactyl, humor, a Scotty, and convivial mummies. It's on my "Must Watch Again" list.

I watched the French version with English subtitles on Netflix, which was great. So caught up in it that I didn't even notice I was reading subtitles. I read comments afterward which said the dubbed version sucked compared to the subtitled one. --Just a heads' up.

I'll second the yay for Shaun the Sheep, or anything by Aardman entertainment. I didn't catch which character inThe Extrordinary adventures...was the Scotsman, but it had everything else you said. A fun film. Thanks for the suggestion.

The Scottish terrier belonging to the Prime Minister, which the pterodactyl brought back to its nest & babied. (Fortunately!)

Yes, it was a fun film indeed. How I wish there was a sequel, or two, already!

Totally agree re Aardman, I must watch Curse of the Were-Rabbit again soon, hilarious!

Of Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films, I think you and your daughter would both enjoy Porco Rosso, My Neighbor Totoro, and Spirited Away. Your daughter may really enjoy Kiki's Delivery Service, and The Secret World of Arrietty. And Howl's Moving Castle. :)

I've watched dubbed versions rather than captioned though, so there is that option.

Any of the other Studio Ghibli productions is worth a look if your daughter was happy to sit thru the Wind Rises (must admit I found that one hard work, and a little odd for the subject matter) the biggie of course being Spirited Away.

edit looks like CrickettGrrrl has beaten me to it (though I'd always take the original soundtracks with subs over dubbing)

Yes hard work seems like a good summary. Again, I'll check out Spirited away.

Don't forget Laputa Castle in the Sky and Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro. For yourself I suggest you take a look at Grave of the Fireflies and My Neighbors the Yamadas.

LOL, I never even considered the dog. I ran through all the characters in my head going "Nope, not a scotsman..."

I loved Curse of the Were-Rabbit, but I think my favorite was Flushed Away
