The Drop (2014)- Described as a gritty crime drama starring Tom Hardy, Naomi Rapace, and James Gandolfini. Slow, boring, not worth the payoff and I disliked both Hardy's and Rapace's Brooklyn accents. Blah... :p

American Sniper... Just 20 minutes into it... already sick of this pos propaganda crap...

Even worse than The Hurt Locker or Zero Dark Thirty....

Really sucks...

Age Of Ultron. These movies are just getting plain silly now.

Reality isn't propaganda. You realize this right? You DO have an education and know what propaganda is, right? You have just posted THE stupidest, most asinine comment ever.

"Reality" is a strong word for the the movie American Sniper.

No, he was a real guy, in a real SEAL team, in a real Navy. I'd call that reality.

I have not yet seen this movie, however my observation is that just because a movie is based on a real person, does not guarantee the reality of events, the motivations of the character, and message of the story, and does not exclude the possibility of propaganda. That would depend on the agenda of the director to show an honest portrayal or a skewed one.

This is even holds true for documentaries - - films intended to document reality.

Agreed, it's the perspective of the film maker and the story he/she wants to tell. It's fun to imagine the difference in an oil industry documentary, one paid for Big Oil vs one paid for by the Sierra Club. ;)

Conquest of Space (1955)
A team of American astronauts leave their space station on the first mission to Mars, but the captain's religious beliefs may get in the way.

Chasing Ghosts (2014)- Low key comedy drama about a boy whose brother dies, becomes obsessed about death and subsequently films a spectral image at a funeral. The human interest aspect held my attention. This is not a ghost story.

The Times of Harvey Milk Brilliant documentary shot on 35mm. Won an Oscar back then good to see it on the big screen.

Since it was released in '84 it left me wondering about Dan White (what a fitting name btw) and what kind of life he'd been leading now. Just read he committed suicide in '85...

I watched "Harold & Maude" last night. What a great movie-- and I loved the Cat Stevens soundtrack. Thanks amazon prime! :)

Back in the day, it was a regular on the repertory movie theatre circuit. It's a black comedy classic with a heart of gold - - and as you say, an awesome soundtrack.

Saw Avengers: Age of Ultron over the weekend. Very fun, but I was disappointed in the running language jokes. I thought that was over the top and just unnecessary in a movie that you know will be seen by tons of kids worldwide.

Glad you liked it. What are running language jokes though? Swearing?
I'm really not that excited over any superhero flic anymore sadly, they got too big and try to appeal to every relevant marked..makes the formular boring to me.

Have you seen Cap2: Wintersoldier though? That one was extremely good imo, and I never liked Captain America as a character at all. :D

I prefer the focus on individual characters such as Wolverine in X-Men 1&2, Spider-Man 1&2 (not amazing Spider-Man), Thor 1, and The Punisher. Did not care for the first Avengers, have not seen the second one yet. The first three titles I mentioned are super hero perfection. :)

*market btw

Here's an interesting opinion piece along that line...

Age of Robots: How Marvel Is Killing the Popcorn Movie

Just skimmed past some paragraphs. I should add that the first Avengers bored me to death - the writer of that piece sounds like he quite loved it.

Of course it's popcorn and for me that's ok - seems a ton of people really enjoy those.

And to be honest: I don't need character arcs in these movies: they work well in comics to have a red lead over lots of issues but frankly: a three hour movie which is part of a trilogy is very likely going to bore me to tears (when talking mainstream, only so much time I can switch off my brain ;)). I don't need them because I know them already as well. And the average movie goer doesn't care - he just wants to be entertained.

My biggest issue though is: they don't look great - artistically they look all the same. Last year I pulled three Avenger comics, didn't really care for the story except for one but you could always tell there is a difference. Let alone Iron Man or other series.

I agree. Watchmen was the only I can think of that is in my Top 5. Guardians.. was the same ol' same ol', really boring and predictable.

The Hulk by Ang Lee was really good
Wintersoldier was good
loved Dredd
Batman Begins was good
Iron Man 1 was good
Watchmen was good

The latest Wolverine was ok and X-Men First Class had something going on for it too.

That's just me of course. Have to have a second look at this GoldenBoy (red dude/devil with the cut-off horns--forgot the name  ) I think I enjoyed that too pretty much.

^talking modern flics only.

At the beginning of the movie Iron Man curses and Cap tells him to watch his language. This exchange becomes a running joke throughout the movie as they tease Cap for his comment and of course seek the opportunity to further curse. Eventually Cap himself curses to show that he's not such a prude or clean kind of guy. I just think that kind of stuff is over the top and unnecessary in a movie that we know will be seen worldwide by millions of kids.

I've enjoyed all the Superhero movies, but that's not surprising as I grew up collecting comics as a kid and am very familiar with the characters. I did very much enjoy The Winter Soldier and have always liked Captain America.

I know you do. I collected myself quite some years and recently started again for the fun of it, although nothing really stands out - I like me some Iron Fist and the Uncanny Avengers run is quite good (god, I love Acuna's art!).

Cap always was to bland for me, bit of a mix of He-Man and Superman :D.

Glad you enjoy those movies! I just hope there will be one that risks something in the artistic department, be it story-wise or graphically, better both of it. :)

By Golden Boy, I believe you mean Hellboy which is right up there with Dredd as my favorite comic adaptation. I really enjoyed Captain America the Winter Soldier, think it's the best Marvel film to date, but my interest in Marvel as a movie goer and comic reader is waning fast.

Lately, I'm getting back into old school Kung Fu films; these movies never left my memory and are much more fun for me than anything modern.

I appreciate that the super hero films are enjoyed and that, but like the comics, I definitely see my head is in the past and I am perfectly fine with that.

Kazmac! :D Good to see you pal...

Got your PM, will answer later, really busy atm.

Hellboy correct! No idea where tha Golden.. came from. Haven't seen the second one but the first was right up there with the best. But haven't watched it in ages. Interest waning here too, but as a comic collector in the 90s I'm happy to see those companies making a good chunk of money now.

Kung-Fu, heh? Great, hand out some recommendations, please! :D I believe god made Enter the Dragon :D Got some Tokyo noirs from 70s I guess, have to look. Quite fun but I'm mostly to worn out to really finish them (watching with subs so yea..).

Later..

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army? :)

I should have included Hellboy, the original movie when referencing comic to movie perfection. I never read the comic, but this movie was such an unexpected treat, offbeat and amazing with a slew of iconic characters, not to mention Nazis and the pursuit of the occult. In contrast Hellboy 2 not so much, feeling repetitive. I should probably watch it again though.
