Mad Max was done in the good old grindhouse style but the endless car chase got tiresome by the end of over two hours - real grindhouse directors knew to get out before the 90 minute mark. Also it didn't help they got some sad sack boring guy to play Max, Charlize Theron acted circles around him. Still not too terrible - - I give it a solid B.

Yep, ~90-100mins is my favorite length for that type too.

Didn't know Charlize is in there. Good news. :D

Saw Godzilla (2014) yesterday. Yaaaawn. Switched sound off and surfed the i-net after 50mins or so.

Think that boring soldier dude got more screen-time than Godzilla? What's interesting in that? And the times they finally showed it it was too dark to see anything..lol.

In comparison, despite not being true to the mythos, Gozilla 1998 was quite entertaining, with outstanding cinematography, great shots and action, like its entrance into Manhattan. :D

Tom Hardy plays Max. I've not seen this yet, but I've liked him in previous roles. He played Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and I also liked him in Inception.

TCM Presents Into the Darkness: Investigating Film Noir

TCM is putting on a course, online, for free, about Film Noir. It starts June 1st.

Summer is cooler in the shadows.

We invite movie fans from around the world to join us for a flexible, multimedia investigation and celebration of film noir.

In this nine-week course, we’ll go back in film history to investigate the "The Case of Film Noir"—the means, motives, and opportunities that led Hollywood studios to make these hard-boiled crime dramas, arguably their greatest contribution to American culture.

This course will run concurrently with the Turner Classic Movies "Summer of Darkness” programming event, airing 24 hours of films noir every Friday in June and July 2015. This is the deepest catalog of film noir ever presented by the network (and perhaps any network), and provides an unprecedented opportunity for those interested in learning more to watch over 100 classic movies as they investigate “The Case of Film Noir.”

Both the course and the associated films will enrich your understanding of the film noir phenomenon—from the earliest noir precursors to recent experiments in neo-noir. You will be able to share thoughts online and test your movie knowledge with a worldwide community of film noir students and fans.

Course Outcomes
Students will

  • gain a deeper appreciation of classic Hollywood movies
  • be able to identify the characteristics of a film noir
  • able to explain the origins and history of film noir
  • be able to perform close analyses of films noir

Topics include

  • What is Film Noir?
  • Film Noir and Its Influences
  • Film Noir in the Studio System
  • Film Noir Themes and Characters
  • Film Noir in the Postwar Period

For more information and to sign up, follow this link: https://www.canvas.net/browse/bsu/tcm/courses/film-noir

I signed up for it and if completed successfully they give you a nice certificate of completion.

Maybe I'll see it at some point although Emmerich is garbage tier imo. At least he does that good. ;)

Lean and mean vs fatty. Call me crazy but I actually prefer the fatty one. Looks more like Godzilla to me than Jurassic Park. But yea, maybe the Emmerich one is actually entertaining. Can't stand these pretentious wannabe artsy billion dollar mainstream flics that all still have these tiresome clichéd dialogues and characters nonetheless. *sigh* And Bryan Cranston is kinda burned out for me with Breaking Bad, he's a good actor but all these facial expressions are so familiar now it's not even funny.

The beginning was kinda ok - could have looked at Stalker for a thing or two but just went downhill eversince.

MadMax though - I'm down for that! :D

Arsenic and Old Lace (1944)- Great classic comedy, starring Cary Grant, Raymond Massey, and Peter Lorre about two old biddies who have a habit of killing people with tea (as a kind act) and burying them in their basement. :)

Cantonen Iron Kung Fu (yes so Cantonen is not a word but...) this is another one I have been rewatching a lot. @ twietee there was a german release with Leopard in the title, I forget the full name though. Very simple, but great training / fight sequences and the hero is just great.

Captain America The Winter Soldier - this is pretty much committed to memory so I'll stop now. At least until I decide if I'm even going to bother seeing Civil war.

Big Trouble in Little China - Will never get tired of my favorite villain Lo Pan. Just so much fun. Even more so now that I've seen more than a few really wonked, supernatural Wu Xia.

Will check it out Cantonen..

...never knew Big Trouble was made by Carpenter?! Instant buy.

And saw Romeo+Juliet ('96)yesterday. Think I saw it partially once (but that can very well have been only the Cardigans video back then (I guess, lovefool IIRC), heavily rotated on MTV, and I had a little 16yo crush an that singer as well as Claire Danes I have quite some nostalgic memories about it).

Well, didn't age that well overall. The quirky parts and the music are forgettable and ruin the overall experience imo as the direction at times. But some scenes are done quite well imo and while DiCaprio definitely had "the looks" back then (looks fed up today, imo) it's amazing what an incredible talented actress Claire Danes was, is and will ever be... Love her <3

Holy cow, Kazmac! Checked out some of your Samurai flics on amazon and they're quite on the expensive side

:/

Will have to search for that quite a bit I guess..

Sadly, Amazon is way over priced for many of them, but I found decent to excellent bootlegs of several on eBay and elsewhere. Priced much better too. Thankfully, I'm only focusing on one actor/martial artist.

but there's always Youtube too. :p

I'm debating if I'll even bother with Mad Max Fury Road cinematically. I'll probably wait to rent now. Not a Charlize fan but I'm glad the film is doing well for everyone involved. Seems like the sequel is all but greenlit.

Thought you were really looking forward to this one? Anyway parents-in-law coming up this week-end so good reason to plan an escape route via cinema.

It's now on my radar. Without spoilers, can you describe why it's so good?

It's dark, bleak and smart. The acting is spot-on. There are slow parts but they really enhance the tension; there isn't one dull moment.

I suggest not seeing the trailer. I saw it after I watched the movie and there are scenes where too much is revealed. I'm glad I went in fresh.

I am always interested in AI movies and this is one of the best IMO.

Better than A.I.? :p

I agree entirely. Also its really beautifully shot & edited.
Its so different to A.I that its hard to compare. Both excellent in their own ways.

Along with Lucy - its the best movie I've seen this year. Both films that make one think about future possibilities .

Lucy is good, but it could have been better. The tendency in scifi in a conflict based story, when I see a transformation such as hers, I expect big things to happen on the characters part to resolve the conflict. While I don't describe the ending as invalid, it was intriguing, but lacked the holy-crap execution of god-like power I anticipated.

So I ended up watching Mad Max over the weekend and...

I had NO idea what I was watching till 70% of the movie. Maybe it was because this is the first time I ever heard of a Mad Max movie?

The Avengers: Age of Ultron: If I hadn't liked avengers when i was much younger, this movie would have been trash. Horrid screenwriting, bad acting, and ultron sounded like james spader was doing a night job from his laywer gig from Boston Legal

X-Men: Days of Future Past: Awesome movie, better than First Strike in my opinion. Great acting from fassbender and james mcavoy as magneto and professor X. The movie did a great job establishing a sense of urgency for the characters, something the Avengers sorely lacks.

Mad Max: Terrible movie, it was like watching a 2 hour movie of the gathering of the juggalos. No idea how it has such good reviews.

You are definitely doing yourself a disservice if you don't watch Birdman. Superb film and it has great usage of film techniques. I can easily see it being used in some film classes.

Mad Max is one of those movies I am finding, visiting a few forums and also talking with my friends. You either love/like it, or you hate it.

Me I liked it for the action. This is a movie you don't go to see with the expectation of their being any type of character development. Heck even The Road Warrior was short on dialog. It was all about the car, truck, bang them up, blow them up, and lets ride this out till there is no one standing movie! :D

I liked AOU, not the best movie of the summer but it was another good popcorn flick.

The original cut of the Watchmen is horrible. The directors cut, to me is a better movie, still not the best, they left out some stuff, that I feel were important, but hey!

True. Still I was just turned off by the whole movie. I'll admit I'm biased against action films though, but I do like a few. The recent Guardians of the Galaxy comes to mind.

I would have just liked them to flesh out the mythos of this dystopian world a little bit more - - not long drawn out exposition, but just a little more depth all along for context.
