Films I've watched lately:

Lots of Martial Arts / Wu Xia movies @Twietee (the first two are must sees):

Odd Couple (a.k.a. The Eternal Conflict, 1979) - I've always heard of how much fun and amazing Sammo Hung's late 70s Kung Fu films are and this one is probably the best (along with Warriors Two and the Victim.) Yes, some of the humor is corny (or bathroom oriented), but the core story is a heck of a lot of fun: Sammo and Lau Kar Wing play both aged weapons masters whose annual duel always ends in a draw, as well as their perspective younger students. The weapons fu is just off the charts. Love the villain too (my man Leung Kar Yan - oh he is so great.) I would love a blu ray of this with English subtitles.

The Victim (1980) - Another Sammo Hung vehicle that really gets great once you get past the kind of goofy first 30 minutes of Sammo's Chen wanting Leung Kar Yan's Chun Yao to be his Sifu. The core story of Chun Yao's fear of and oppression by his older, adopted brother is so simple yet handled so incredibly well. When Yao finally gets mad as hell and won't take it any more: holy cow, that final fight ((yes SPOILERS)) . This is another one I wish would be on blu ray. It hit me a lot harder than I expected and I just love this movie. In fact, this and Odd Couple are now in my Top 5 favorite films of all time.

Sleeping Fist (1979) A variant on the drunken master theme that features some great fights and a decent story.

Warrior's Two (1978) - Another Sammo film with a lot of amazing Wing Chun training sequences. Lots of people love this one, I'd like it a lot more if the Sifu were around a bit more.

Secret Service of the Imperial Court (1984) This later day Shaw Brothers movie feels more like an installment of a Japanese samurai film than Chinese Dynasty (there's a definite wink to Lone Wolf and Cub too), but the big hearted Sgt. of the Brocade Guard gets in over his head when he decides to go against the Emperor and the Emperor's Worm Tongue (a Eunuch) who is one nasty piece of ...

Thundering Mantis - This is seriously over the top and it's not like the lead character wasn't asking for that trouble. What happens though is literally bug nuts crazy.

Big Trouble in Little China - Lo Pan finally has some competition as my favorite villain (see Odd Couple above), but this is still such a fun movie I cannot see ever not enjoying it. Kurt Russell does a hilariously bad John Wayne riff on purpose and it's great that he's the sidekick. Too bad the comic is so disappointing.

There's a bit more but I'll be watching a recent Wu Xia film True Legend (2010) on the way home tonight.

Update: True Legend: I liked the interpretation of Beggar Su (the master of Drunken style who spread it to others), but the Matrix-y CGI and fights really lowered the impact of Su's importance in Wushu history. I am glad I saw it, but I'll probably stick to Yimou's beautiful contemporary Wu Xia going forward because he still takes advantage of the skill many of his martial artist actors unleash.

The Debt

In 1965, three Mossad agents cross into East Berlin to apprehend a notorious Nazi war criminal. Thirty years later, the secrets the agents share come back to haunt them.

Son came home from school and wanted to watch this movie on the advice of his teacher. Thought it was a well done movie that had some interesting twist.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron: If I hadn't liked avengers when i was much younger, this movie would have been trash. Horrid screenwriting, bad acting, and ultron sounded like james spader was doing a night job from his laywer gig from Boston Legal

X-Men: Days of Future Past: Awesome movie, better than First Strike in my opinion. Great acting from fassbender and james mcavoy as magneto and professor X. The movie did a great job establishing a sense of urgency for the characters, something the Avengers sorely lacks.

Mad Max: Terrible movie, it was like watching a 2 hour movie of the gathering of the juggalos. No idea how it has such good reviews.

I don't remember a lot about this movie.

Thanks for Birdman info guys. I just don't know if I'll watch it, maybe! ;)

You are definitely doing yourself a disservice if you don't watch Birdman. Superb film and it has great usage of film techniques. I can easily see it being used in some film classes.

Interesting Impulse.

-Ultron I can follow up on without having seen it.
-First Class you mean? Really liked that too so Future Past will be seen sooner or later (despite Kazmac's opinion :D)
-MadMax I'm quite pumped for. Hardy FTW!

Thanks for the push. I've been trying to talk the wife into watching. :)

I assume your talking about Fury Road and not the original Mad Max? Did you like the original?

I never saw the original actually, but if it's anything like fury road id rather sit through a lobotomy than watch it.

Timeline (2003)- Enjoyable Michael Crichton time travel story about a visit to the 14th century France, including a paradox!! Would a time travel story be interesting without one? :) I'm a bit puzzled why IMDB and Netflix viewers gave it a low rating. Paul Walker is one of the stars.

Atlas Shrugged: Who Is John Galt? (2014)
Approaching collapse, the nation's economy is quickly eroding. As crime and fear take over the countryside, the government continues to exert its brutal force against the nation's most productive who are mysteriously vanishing - leaving behind a wake of despair. One man has the answer. One woman stands in his way. Some will stop at nothing to control him. Others will stop at nothing to save him. He swore by his life. They swore to find him. Who is John Galt?

Yeah, for some reason I always screw up the name (First Take/Strike/Class...I can never remember).

I thought Hardy was pretty underwhelming in Mad Max, but maybe I just didn't get the character.

I watched the first Avengers movie last night. Very enjoyable.

Yeah, first one was pretty good.

I watched Divergent last night. I'm not big on pre-teen female angst, and didn't like the book much at all. However, the movie kept my attention, and didn't feel like I should demand my money back.

Last week it was Grindhouse: Death Proof. My wife didn't much like it, but overall I thought it was pretty good. I didn't understand why Kurt Russell went totally wimp at the end, but it was fun watching him get handed his butt.

Saw Godzilla (2014) yesterday. Yaaaawn. Switched sound off and surfed the i-net after 50mins or so.

Think that boring soldier dude got more screen-time than Godzilla? What's interesting in that? And the times they finally showed it it was too dark to see anything..lol.
