Saw it yesterday and totally agree! Great style!! Enjoyed it much more than Cantonten.. bit all over the place (Lanterns) but very entertaining. Sets and costumes were amazing, choreography was fun, I love the flying around stuff :D

Will have to find a way to get those Shaw Bros flics, not that easy unfortunately! Not exactly my idea to buy a region A player..

Um, iTunes has several of those Shaws I mentioned in HD; Here's a link to the Shaw Brothers on iTunes, hopefully it will work for Germany too.

but as someone who just put out a lot of $ to get a multi region player for proper copies of some of those Shaw Brothers films (and others I am sure), I can completely relate. Glad you liked Human Lanterns. If you want a post Shaw Brothers film that's good fun the UK release of Shanghai 13 is fantastic.

I watched the ridiculously enjoyable and crazy Legendary Weapons of China last night. It went from an intense opening to a LOL movie stealing sequence and then became incredibly down beat (if you thought Human Lanterns was all over the place, you haven't seen anything yet.) It basically butchered the story of martial artists trying to use their skill to deflect foreign invaders bullets into something else entirely. The credits and the two magic clans are some of the most inventive and funny (both intentional and unintentional) I've seen yet. The end fight was pretty special too although somewhat lacking in the weapons fu department (strange, considering how great the choreography was for the rest of the film.) I think the pressure point voodoo dolls were the weapon of the film for me though. :p

I'm downloading Moonstruck (slooooowly). Haven't watched it in a couple years but once I have it in hand I'll probably watch it twice a year. I just love that film.

Logan's Run (1976)
An idyllic sci-fi future has one major drawback: life must end at 30.

I finally got around to seeing Jurassic World.

Considering how much of a fan I was of the original, I'm kind of surprised it took so long. That being said...I can't decide if I like it or not. The CGI looks terrible in places which was disappointing.

Still...dinosaurs :p Think I'll have to go see it again at some point to reassess.

As much as I prefer the original novel, this is a fun tweak until Peter Ustinov shows up. I love Carousel too... (something that is not in the novel but should have been.)

Presently watching The Deadly Broken Blade. Another fantastic wuxia helmed by Sun Chung and starring Ti Lung. This is 3 out of 4 movies of Chung's I've really enjoyed for the characters and their complex histories. Ti Lung is such a wonderfully arrogant swordsman here. Another nice surprise.

Kingsman: The Secret Service - Verdict: There was a lot to like but still I was just kinda, meh...
Score: 5.3

Apocalypse Now - Verdict: I just saw this movie for the first time last night. No wonder it's a classic. It couldn't have been better. Perfect directing by FFC. Phenomenal acting by a brilliant cast.
Score: 9.5

Terminator Genisys - Verdict: I'm a huge fan of this franchise. That's why I was kinda bummed to read all the bad reviews. So I ended up going into this movie with low expectations. The thing is, I loved every second of this movie. TOTALLY. I loved the story, the acting, the effects, the twists, etc.
My only gripe is the movie poster. It shows something that should be omitted until the right time within the movie.
Score: 8.4

Saw this last night with my family. We all really enjoyed it. This was much better than Terminator: Salvation.

We let the kids pick, so yesterday was Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. This morning was Ice Age: Continental Drift and now it's The Boxtrolls. The Ice Age movies have enough humor to be enjoyable for adults, although in general I thought that Dawn of the Dinosaurs was a better movie than Continental Drift. The Boxtrolls is great in completely different ways. I guess it's that British flavor.

Thanks for the recommendations! Gotta love the 80s..

Fortunately I checked the German Amazon store (usually go straight to the UK for that stuff) and there are multiple Shaw Collections out there, quite cheap too, so that's great! Guess you could even make a litte business selling those trough Amazon.co.uk since there is only Region A available (and some reviews nothing but complaints that the film couldn't be watched..:D.

That should keep me entertained for a good while. :D

until Peter Ustinov shows up.
Yeah he did play an odd character, a bit aloof. It didn't seem to fit too well with the premise of the film and gave it a different feel for the remainder of it.

But, regardless, I thought it was still pretty good.

I watched Independence Day yesterday, the Fourth of July. Today, I watched Jurassic Park III. Enjoyed them both, but liked Independence day better. In my opinion, Jurassic Park III is the weakest of the 4 movies.

Interesting, I liked JPIII better than JPII. I found the whole escape from trailer sequence to be overdone and tedious, almost comedic, excluding whoever-he-was being eaten.

anyone saw Cartel Land?
it's a documentary, but rolls like a movie.
VERY intense.
especially once you realize there was zero reenactment.
everything is genuine, filmed live.
dead people are actually dead. torture is real.
yikes.

I heard about this over the weekend. Not sure I'd want to see something like that.

We watched an interesting reality series on DVD over the last few days called, The Chair. Essentially, the concept takes two directors and asks them to make a feature film using one screenplay. The screenplay can be rewritten or tweaked and the producers allow the filmmakers to use their creativity while providing strong advice and they get final cut on the finished movie.

The concept is also wrapped around a contest but that's barely the point. It is a fine look at the intricacies of what it takes to make a low budget (800k) movie and how each director handles the multitude of challenges a film production presents. Worth a look if you like binge-watching shows.

it's very good. and it needs to be seen.
it's not particularly graphic, but it definitively is very intense.
there was a Q&A with the filmmakers after the show, and they were saying they have hundreds of hours of tape, and that there are bits they decided not to show.
it's impressive when you think that when they show they are being shot at, they are being shot at!
to steal an expression form the movie, these kids have huevos.
