I don't even think that concept works that great in the comics. And there you have at least some room for imagination. You always wonder why this or that character holds back that much when seeing him achieve so much more when on its own. And then you have Capt. I-know-the-answer-to-everything of course (at least in the comics). Was actually really funny when the others took him out for half of the run because they couldn't stand him either. lol. Think it was the (still extremely lackluster) New Avengers one.

First Avengers flic was one of the worst super-heroes ones I've seen. But I grew extremely tired by those predictable formulars - so there is that too. Haven't even seen the third Iron Man movie and the first is right up there with my top favorites.

I've never really cared for reading comic book teams, much less seeing movies with countless characters (There was only one team I lost my collective fan girl marbles over Team X.) As Huntn put it, "...ensemble stories leave much less time for individual character development..." - sadly, that's the truth.

If I want characters, good dialog and OTT anything, I'll happily stick with my foreign and domestic genre films from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

I don't know...the whole Hulk/Iron Man and Hulk not really being in control thing might not be part of the specific story, but the movies are about more than just that, they are about background storylines as well that deal with the team, its members, SHIELD and that whole universe in general--they are basically taking the approach that the comics have had where a whole universe is built out and dealt with while specific smaller storylines are explored.

Understood. Unfortunately the onscreen Avengers felt flat especially the the opening sequence of this most recent chapter, and don't think I can't be wowed by big screen CGI action. Have you every gotten an emotional response when you see action that is so GOOD? I shed some tears watching the Battle of Minas Tirith and the climax of Avatar, they were that good. Pacing plays a big part of it. :)

I read a couple of decades of X-Men and the aspect of them practicing to get better as a team worked well, but, it was not something that could be encapsulated in a single movie, so it did work better with serial episodes IMO where more time is allowed to tell that story, something the movies in general have short changed. One huge exception regarding "short changed" was the first Spider-Man which was brilliant as Peter Parker transistions from awkward teen to super hero while fighting a seriously demented and dangerous adversary. In the annuals of comic-to-movie, this might be number one for capturing this great comic story in a single movie. Spider-Man 2 comes in a close second. :)

Right up (down) there with generally praised The Dark Knight Rises. :D

I rank Dark Knight as the best Batman movie ever made. :)

Not all types of movies are for everyone.

Agreed! :)

Mind that I was speaking about the Avengers. And the recent comic runs at that which I followed for some time. Quite dissapointing imo, except the Uncanny Avengers who were quite fun. Also avid X-Men fan here (almost two decades ago though ). I think they work much better imo, since they always were a team - there was no Cyclops solo series e.g. Only Wolverine stood out as far as I remember.

I think Watchmen worked quite beautifully as a teamster movie. Probably much more artistical freedom because they had not to care about promoting different multiple billion dollar franchises within one single popcorn flic + selling all the toys too?

Watchmen was a very interesting and strange graphic novel, the most in-depth exploration of characters, but it was too much introspection, subtle tension, and not enough action. I watched the movie before I read it, and don't remember that much about it as far as how it matched up with the novel.

Deadly Breaking Sword in Cantonese. I prefer the Mandarin, but I am thrilled to have this dubbed in both Chinese dialects now. Lian San is my favorite villain along with Lo Pan (and LS is definitely my favorite 'super villain.') It's easy to skip to his scenes or just watch the entire movie and wait for those terrific moments.

I love the spaghetti western flavored opening fight between Lian and the title character. It was pretty cool to hear the 'ghost town' sound effects and music on this print, as the North American Mandarin print has the dialog up front and the music / sounds in the background. Yeah, this film is definitely one of my favorites in my kung fu screenings these past few months (and among my top three Shaw Brothers film along with Vengeance! and Judgement of An Assassin.)

iTunes just got a sentimental, corny *and fun* Fu Sheng film, My Rebellious Son (of course only a month after I bought a grey market copy.) It has a nice theme and Fu's goofiness works nicely here. The most impressive aspect of his performance for me was his nimbleness martial arts-wise after breaking both legs in two separate accidents. All that pales to Chan Wai Man's scene-stealing samurai smacking the crap out of his comrades in a display of samurai fighting prowess. I think he enjoyed filming that scene just a little too much.:p

As far as the glut of super hero films, I am content as I am very selective (always have been when reading the comics and even more when watching the movies.) I know of two I'll be seeing, anything else will be icing on the cake (if I even still care.) Too little characterization, too much spectacle for me. To each their own.

Space Jam (1996)

Michael Jordan, Bill Murray, and Looney Tunes characters is already a win. Joe Pytka who directed Let It Ride (1989) and a bunch of Michael Jackson music videos at the helm. So Pytka directed two of my fav sports - basketball with my all-time favorite player and horse racing. Anything usually with Bill Murray can be good (example What About Bob?, Quick Change).

The Emperor's New Groove (2000)

My all-time favorite Disney animated film. And I don't like David Spade. But the humor works on all levels for me. Patrick Warburton is much funnier as Kronk than as Joe in Family Guy or The Tick.

Top 5 Disney Animated
1. The Emperor's New Groove (2000)
2. Aladdin (1992)
3. Hercules (1997)
4. Dumbo (1941)
5. The Lion King (1994)

The Lion King used to be #1 but gets too melodramatic and loses steam at the end. The Top 3 are the funniest while Dumbo is my first Disney love that got me into loving animals at age 6. I still prefer WB cartoons more though I prefer the rides at Six Flags Magic Mountain over Disneyland. But Disney has the better spirit and ambiance in both film and amusement parks.

50 First Dates (2004)

I don't love it and think the jokes misses alot and feels forced. But that sweet and logical ending feels quite magical thanks to IZ's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" cover and that video montage. I still prefer looking at Bora Bora in Coupon Retreat and Carlos Ponce is funnier than anyone in 50 First Dates. Been to Hawaii three times already, so the scenery in Bora Bora is more interesting to me. But 50 First Dates is still quite sweet with the superior ending. It also got me and my gf to crave Spam.

Blade Trinity (2004)

Blade had the best story, and Blade II had cooler action and better humor. Ryan Reynolds just kills Part 3 for me and Jessica Biel is just ok in it. The story is just terrible and the action doesn't excite me.

Nothing to watch in the theater I want to see. Not wasting money for Pan and Everest is gone in the theaters. We have movies for one month or less. Might wait for Bridge of Spies this week but seeing high reviews usually overrates movies for me as I didn't like Saving Private Ryan that much back in 1998. I like Tom Hanks but I don't love a majority of his movies he is in except his 80's stuff like The Money Pit or The Burbs.

Will go watch Pixels later.

LOVED space jam. I actually ordered the sticker book from my VHS copy of Space Jam and it was my first dad has ever used his master card and I was SO happy! I don't think he has used it since! (never needed to use it)...

My recent post inspired me to watch:

Spider-Man (2002)- The original, the best, great atmosphere and music, I love the entire cast. Outstanding buildup, pacing, cinematography, and special effects. Willem Dafoe plays a great sympathetic villain. We'll meet again Spider-Man!! JK Simmons does a great job as the newspaper editor. Spider-man flies, er swings! The opening credits gives me chills. :):)

Judgment of an Assassin (1977) again. Every time I watch, I discover something new to enjoy. This time it was the excellent action choreography by Tang Chia and his assistant. The forms nicely matching up the distinct characters (their personalities, age etc.) That was so much fun to catch this time and it makes the fights feel very special and integral to the story. From David Chiang's mischief making young hippie to Wong Yu's arrogant, hot-headed assassin and Chan Wai Man's cruel and brutal, older Bloody Devil I feel like I know the characters just a little bit more now and I absolutely love that.

Considering how much depth was put into the story of a single mastermind wanting to over take the martial arts world through manipulation, assassination and corruption of the laws of this world; I am just delighted to see martial arts skill as interpreted as distinct body language for each character.

C'mon Celestial, release this on iTunes so I won't be the only person utterly in love with this film.

Revenge of the Corpse (1981) How do I write a review of this and not start laughing? One of those so bad it's good HK ghost / zombie horror films from the 80s. Constable Sgt. Du has many enemies including his unloyal wife. Framed for a theft and murder he did not commit, Du is wrongly murdered, but as he dies he asks his loyal and loving little sister to wrap him in a red shroud.

Hrmm... a good 15 minutes later some of the goofiest zombie make up ever and the fun starts (this is about 45 minutes in.) Director Sun Chung, Pai Paio (what a trooper), Chan Shen and Lo Lieh must have taken one look at Ni Kuang's script before they said 'f' it' and just did their own thing. The usual Sun Chung theme of evil men desiring power, (a woman), control and doing anything to get it, I was not expecting this to be as unintentionally funny as it was. A pretty welcome break from the bleak and heavy turn Sun Chung would take after My Rebellious Son. Probably the worst Sun Chung movie I've seen, but it was the worst in a so-bad-it's-good-way. :p

Taking a walk down my youth, I got Gremlins for my sons to enjoy. I had forgotten how overall terrible it really was. Sure, there are some great parts, but it just didn't age well. Both boys wandered away while it was on.

Now I see they are planning a re-make.

But I did like Bad Santa considering how much I enjoyed Bad Teacher. And Joe Pytka also directed Let It Ride (1989). Michael Jordan (my fav sports idol even though he is a real life jerk), Bill Murray (funny even when he isn't saying anything), and Looney Tunes is always a win to me.

I can only take small doses of Will Ferrell when he's doing his raunchy, psycho brand of comedy. His best performance which I really enjoyed was the voice of Megamind.

Last night I saw The Walk in IMAX 3D. WOW! Absolutely amazing! Must see. If you can, see it in 3D.

Usually IMAX 3D is sensory overload (especially with action movies) but this movie is actually enhanced by it. Plus the story itself is incredible.
