I have seen a number of good sci-fi movies, but none quite as gripping as "Arrival"

Everyone needs to go out and see it.
I went out and saw it and boy was I disappointed! Thanks a lot.

While the central philosophical story idea of non-linear time and it's relationship to language was fascinating and profound, the movie itself is deadly dull! Also, it is irritatingly manipulative in how it tries to trick the audience into not seeing the "twist". Add to this the cliche dumb military and background news clips and a running time 30 minutes too long, and I rate Arrival a C-

Last nite i saw the animated movie Sausage Party, it was great but they kinda pushed the envelope alittle, they were trying too hard. it is a R rated movie.
This was one of the least funny movies I've seen this year. The trailer was 100x better than the film. F

De Palma - very nice documentary, despite me not being a huge fan of his films a thoroughly awesome film. Really love his historical perspective on his use of shots to tell the story.

I was casually reading through the posts and I think I almost read a spoiler for Arrival (it may have not been, just using that as an example), please, if you're discussing specifics that could compromise someone else's viewing experience, add some spoiler tags!

It's the item here in the edit menu (red / second in the list):

Then you get this nice hidden message:

This is a spoiler ... the wife did it!

Thanks for the refresher about spoiler tags. I'd forgotten it but I try not to spoil until a film has been heavily discussed anyway.

The Arrival was just okay. Kind of like Sci-drama with a dash of inception.

Wait for video.

As I said in another post, some of the ideas expressed are pretty fantastic, but unfortunately they are just spoken words.

Old one on the TV tonight.

A bit slow TBH. And focuses a lot more on his relationship with his wife than his fight against the English.

I liked this. :)

Watched Doctor Strange the other day. Just okay, but in the end just another superhero saves the planet thing. Gets old.

You are reinforcing other views in this thread. I'll be waiting to stream it.

Meanwhile, I'm seeing Doctor Strange for the fourth time soon :) I will most likely get in another couple of viewings as the film is being yanked from theatres as of this Tuesday (thanks Harry Potterverse) and it's going to be a long darn haul until digital and blu ray releases. It's so much fun not to nitpick the crap out of movies and just go have fun. I still dig my Shaw Brothers but gosh that was getting on my last nerve.

I'm waiting till it hits the telly, but you made me curious about Doc Strange - wouldn't have bothered otherwise because I'm not interested in the Marvel movies anymore.

I thought Harry Potter died?! (series-wise).

Currently, the wife and I have been watching the Netflix original series, The Crown. We've found the series to be very captivating. This historical drama is superbly done in all respects. One qualifier, as an American, I likely do not have the same knowledge for what is historically accurate as one from the UK. Here is a short trailer:

That Fantastic Beasts movie is a Potter prequel apparently.

As for Doc, I have loved the character since my teens and this seems like a near complete disconnect from the rest of the Marvel U - as well it should. Strange protects the earth and our dimension from mystic threats. Caught some fun homages including an inverse of a Dario Argento Three Mothers plot point (the director loves Argento and is in good stead with Dario'a daughter Asia too) and other character hints last night.

People will and have moaned about how similar Stephen is to Tony Stark but that was all down to Stan Lee, so...

I also love it because it winks at Disney in a fun way and they nailed Steve Ditko's trippy art. My only criteria: if Cumberbatch could convince me he was Stephen Strange the rest would be fine. He did and it was.

Addendum: of course they have to tie this to the Marvel U, but they did in a way that honors the character rather than feeling shoe horned in like some other Marvel films (trying not to nitpick).

This movie was very good and the story line is brilliant but i have a issue with JJ abrams style in his movies. he tends to hold you in suspense for too long. he did this in super 8 and cloverfield. i know each producer has his style but he makes you wait too long. Another thing, his movies doesnt show enough of his aliens/creatures and that makes his movies more bland. It kind of dragged alittle in the middle of the movie but this movie has alot of potential, they could have done more with it.

Excellent film!! Themes of compassion and the effects of our words and actions on others. Mostly, the importance of caring for one another. Certainly more of a rarity in film these days.

I think it's part of the idea not to show that much of the "supernatural" as it keeps it more in mystery and doesn't take away as much focus off the actual suspense that is based around it all rather on the alien/creature itself. Although I would like to see more of the aliens/creature, I think in some ways it does more for the atmosphere by having less of that. But that's part of the style essentially, and some might like it and some might not.

To Catch a Thief (1955)- Cary Grant, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. I love the scenery in this movie on and around the French Riveria and it's a good story too. :)

Thanks for the reminder! Recently browsed the Amazon Prime library and it was no where to be easily found. Just found it. Will watch it soon. :)
