I really had the wrong impression going into this film. It's been almost 40 years, but is the book worth reading?

As far as the movie, it seemed abrupt with things happening with no warning, just "bang" something. Is it that the kid is ignored by his dad? The girl by hers? The bully getting beaten by her parents? Fun with death? Why is the kid so mean to his youngest sister? Who knows, but more importantly, who cares?

Wow, this movie was Superb. This will easily be one of my top 10 Thrillers i have ever seen. this movie is well made, the camera angles were sleek and the story line was good. the actor who played the blind man did a excellent job. The movie has a dark side as well. go see this movie.

While I can respect the creator and the universe, I have no desire to read or see.

As I said in my initial response, my preference is in mature magic users from way back. That is the type I prefer reading, watching and writing. :p

That's fine. :) One of the interesting aspects of Harry Potter is that the series begins light and slowly turns dark. The threat seems remote, a the story for children, happy times in the world of wizards, with vague references to he who will not be named, but steadily increases into a very serious adult story. It's said JKR started out focused on kids, and kept them in her HP universe by upping the games as her audience matured.

Luke Skywalker remains the youngest "wizard" I've ever been drawn to, so my preferences were set pretty early for me.

She is a very shrewd and smart writer; with this plan now continuing in the Fantastic Beasts movies and adult HP stories. I am happy to read children's stories/comics or see movies, (most recently Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur and the movie Enchanted) IF the characters appeal to me; HP does not.

I also find myself drawn to stories which flow from dark to light.

Now that pisses me off when they abandon any pretense of original source material, and then can't even stay true to the celluloid history. Bah!

That's Singer's X-Men for you; A complete train wreck if ever there was. I still really enjoy First Class, but thought Days of Future Past was poop so I passed on this one. To wit, as much as I enjoy Hugh Jackman as Wolverine there is no way I am seeing Logan. Partially because I dislike his successor (the girl, X-23) and partially because it just looks depressing as all heck.

That might be arguable. :p First off let's just admit that faithfulness to the original source material has never been a priority in any of these movies, most of them are pluck the characters and their abilities, although Xavier's school is featured, from the comics and build practically an original story from them with fleeting reference to the source.

For X-Men 1 &2 even if things were juggled a bit, especially Xavier's relationship with Magneto, these first two movies in my opinion, of all the X-Men movies were the most true (if the word can be used), to the original source material, besides being excellent movies in their own right. I'll always be pissed off about X-Men 3 (Last Stand) with how they destroyed an excellent opportunity to start the telling of the Phoenix Saga, but that was not Brian Singer at the helm. We'll, have to agree to disagree. :)

Sure, politely agree to disagree here. 1 and 2 had some elements and characterizations which worked. And it is true most movies made from source material will have changes. Sometimes these work beautifully (most recent would be Doctor Strange imo), sometimes not.

Last Stand was a cluster no matter which way you sliced it. James Marsden never got a proper chance to really be Scott Summers and he was great.

I'll clarify my position on Singer: Singer's major faux particularly since coming back to the franchise is spending way too much time with the same four characters: Xavier, Magneto, Raven and Logan. First Class did a decent job of making Erik and Xavier interesting for the first time since 1, but the subsequent film was just a wash out for me. Of course my utter disinterest in Jennifer Lawrence did not help. I realize these characters go through a specific cycle and must grow/fail in order to become the characters they were in X-Men, but why wipe out some great characters from First Class (Azazel is my favorite evil mutant because he was so perfectly attuned to his era - the Communist Devil :p).

Answered here.

So I got talked into renting the new Ghostbusters as a friend and his wife kept ranting about how hilarious it was and they have already watched it 3 times since they bought it last week.

I should have stuck to my guns that I was not going to watch the remake period. I want my 2 hours back, and my 2 dollars from Redbox.

The entire time the wife and I were waiting for the laughs. It never came. Even my kids said the movie wasn't funny.

Thanks for this report. I knew there was a reason I never went to see this. ;) The original cast and story was supurb with just the right touch of comedy. I'll guess/assume the new players had trouble filling shoes, meeting audience expectations of those who saw the original, and the script was just too repetitive or not that good. One strike for me, I don't think Melissa McCarthy is funny. I can still remember seeing the original film for the first time, a knockout! I think if I had been an actor, I'd have been scared to death to be in this remake, i.e. living up to the original. :)

Hmm (not a sexist statement) :)

I saw Barry Jenkin's Moonlight on Friday and its hands down the best movie I've seen in the last five years. Restrained, troubling, full of heartache and struggle. I'm really sad to think that its probably going to get nominated for a slew of Oscars and maybe only get a screenplay award, the new default for smaller motion pictures at the big show. Regardless, it should be seen by everyone.

I watched A Promise (2013). Watchable in that I never quite got around to wondering "how much longer does this last??" But, I might have done better to have read the translation of the Stefan Zweig novella Journey into the Past on which the movie was based. For one thing, a movie that has all of World War I pressed into service as just part of a five minute explication of a couple's six year separation is almost indefensible on the face of it.

The cinematography and costumes were admirable. I found the acting either wooden or else the characters really were supposed to be all that boxed up, who knows. There was too much suspension of disbelief needed, possibly the fault of the novella itself, and a little too creepy the obsessive, repressed love of the younger male character for the wife of the German steel manufacturer.

Still I couldn't stop watching it, even knowing --as I realized the end must be coming up-- - that I was already thinking more or less what I just wrote about it here.

I think I was hoping to discover at the very end that
he'd at least knocked up his girlfriend from the old days, when he went to fetch his belongings from his old lodgings and she insisted on showing him what can be done with a little actual lust. But no such luck, apparently.

I'm a little curious what other movies you friends find funny and interesting so I can avoid those movies. :)

We watched it last night, I had a bunch of free rentals, and we decided to take a break on our standard christmas flicks (we'll watch those over and over through the holidays).

It's outstanding. Intense, scary, fun twists and yeah, Stephen Lang (who folks might know from Avatar as Colonel Quaritch, among dozens of terrific roles) was fantastic - also, holy hell, the guy is 64.

Loved the camera work, Fede Alvarez (dir) used some of the same style to great effectiveness in his remake of Evil Dead.
