Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (21 July 2017)- Hmm, I may have to see this on the big screen. Is there a reason I'm reminded of Star Wars?

Well, the original source material started in 1967 (Valerian and Laureline), not to mention, Star Wars was also based on Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress from 1958.

So ... yeah. :D
[doublepost=1491698138][/doublepost]Scored Rogue One for $6 digital, going to maybe watch it tonight, haven't seen it, missed it at the theater, but we're catching up on Netflix Comedy (Louis CK and Chapelle) so who knows :D

Definitely SW prequel-flavored and some Buck Rogers there for me too. I'll pass, simply because it feels empty to me, unlike The Fifth Element.

You know who was responsible for many of the designs/elements of The Fifth Element ?
Jean-Claude Mézières

The very same artist/illustrator responsible for the french Valerian comics this movie is based on.

Yes, I've heard that. Respectfully: Just because the source material is from the same creator doesn't mean the filmmaker will interpret the content the same 20 years later. I could be wrong, of course. But I do not feel the same energy of the earlier work.

The Void (2017) if you enjoyed the likes of the The Thing, Dagon or any other H. P. Lovecraft or mythos themed film you will like The Void. Best of all creature effects, without the typical over reliance on CGI. The Void is visceral, gory nor for the faint of heart.

Less said the better, don't seek reviews & spoiliers see for yourself, great indie horror...

I saw Your Name. over the weekend and it was glorious, beautiful. Definitely worth seeing in a theater.
I also saw Personal Shopper which was a trippy euro-centric drama with minor thriller elements. Absolutely compelling- Kristen Stewart is phenomenal.

All my talk over in The Car Thread inspired me to break out my BluRay edition of Bullitt (1968) where Steve McQueen delivers a cool, calm, low key acting performance as a police detective. I've always wondered in combination with multiple chases including a famous car chase, what a coincidence that the detective's last name in this movie connotates a fast moving object. ;)

However in more modern times, I'll point out the chase scene at the beginning of Quantum of Solace is also worthy. :D

This might very well kick Captain America The Winter Soldier out of bed for my favorite Marvel:

Silly, loud and delightfully comic booky. It looks like fun. That's what a lot of comic book films are missing.

@Queen6 - not going to lie, the posters for The Void are creeping me out.

It's very Thor meets Guardians of the Galaxy. Looks like great fun.

Interesting. Scratched Thor totally off my book since the first was mediocre at best and the second..don't think I've made it past half-time with that one.

But you were totally right with the Winter Soldier (which I would never have seen if it weren't for you beating that drum ad nauseam) so might reconsider Thor. Do I rememer correctly that you also recommended Dr. Strange? Because that went into rotation on the telly now.

Did you guys see Logan by any chance? Also curious about Ghost in the Shell. The anime is one of my all time favs and I know that the new one will totally lose out in direct comparison but still..

Never heard of the Void, looks intriguing! Putting it on the list next to Life (or whatever that was called..lol).

I disliked the first two Thor films as well (though I do like Chris Hemsworth in the role), but here it feels like they've embraced the lovable mythological oaf and combined an end of Asgard scenario with Planet Hulk. That's just 13 year old me's perfect idea of four color Marvel from back in the day. It's fun. I am sick of entirely bleak and bleh in comic book films, so given the Ragnarok subtitle I am glad it seems like they decided to go in a rather over-the-top rather silly direction. And no Natalie Portman (yay! Sorry guys not a fan.)

Yes, I enjoyed Doctor Strange quite a bit for what it was (and accepted what it wasn't. A couple of fantastic set pieces including something the character would do in the older comics anyway.)

Logan. Nope. Even though I now have a different cinematic take on Wolverine in my head cannon, just cannot bear saying goodbye to Hugh in the role.

@Queen6 - thanks. That was the poster that really freaked me out the most. :p

Looks like a proper Lovercraft title!

Certainly some Lovecraftian influence. If you look back a few pages I have mentioned some films more directly based on H.P. Lovecraft's works. The Void is one of the better physical effects films of recent. Those liking John Carpenters work will also feel right at home with this one.

In many respects it difficult to describe The Void as is can lead to spoiling the film, best described as a highly visceral horror film with little or no "hand holding" if not liking some of the films referenced best to avoid as the The Void is very much a full on adult rated horror.

I may give Logan a chance at the theater. It appears to be well liked at Rotten Tomatoes.

Found it. :D

Been on a Lovecraftian binge of recent, too many to burden everyone with the imagery :)

Dagon
In the Mouth of Madness
The whisperer in Darkness
The Mist
Necronomicon

Prince of Darkness

Dagon I very much enjoyed, actually kind of creepy, being an effective adaptation of Lovecraft's The Shadow over Innsmouth. The Mist which is difficult to elaborate on, as it could potentially spoil the viewing experience, enjoyable as such content can be.

In the Mouth of Madness I still struggle to get into, don't know why, doesn't grip me. If I had to pick one in isolation Dagon, watch it, see, and comment :) Ripley Scott's Alien and John Carpenters The Thing also have Lovecraftian influences, which arguably add to the fare...

Possibly more to come, equally getting a little saturated :p

Hmm..some I've seen some not. Dagon sounds intriguing..Shadow over Innsmouth is one of my favorite Lovecraft pieces.
I even run a [WW] game here on MR based on it! :D

Sorry for double quote but I can't but notice you haven't included Hellraiser in your list. I guess you already saw that a bunch though! :D

Btw. the first True Detective season was incredibly "Lovecraftian" - never getting tired watching it.

Passengers

Based on all the negative ratings and reviews I skimmed through before watching, my expectations were low, but I enjoyed it.

Dagon is well worth watching and I have little doubt you will enjoy as Shadow over Innsmouth is one of the better Lovecraftian stories to be brought to the screen. Hellraiser just slipped off the list, equally a favourite in the genre, as is Event Horizon. Not watched the True Detective in an age, may need to revisit.

Interesting regarding the game...

They employed deceptive advertising as a hook.

I thought Passengers was just ok, too predictable and a little 2 dimensional for my liking. I also agree that the advertising of the film misrepresented the content with Passengers focus being relationships, not dire & disaster.
