Have you seen number 8 yet? Hard to imagine, but it gets even more ridiculous. The next one might take place in outer space.

Not yet, no, but I'm already grinning about whatever it is they came up with. Need to check it out asap.

I remember reading somewhere that 9 will be the last one, so if the movies follow the trajectory they're on they really have to come up with some outlandish stuff for the last one! Which will probably not be a problem.

Yes, its great. Its been on HBO if you have it. I'm not into spoilers so I'll be cryptic (although you may have seen it in commercials) when the Rock does something towards the end during the big chase, it pretty much beats every wacky thing you've scene up to now.

Vin just said on the Today show that they are doing at least two more.
Very excited to ride the new F&F ride down in Universal with the kids in two months.

I have HBO Nordic, but it's not there. Fortunately it's available as a rental at this other place and I just happen to have a voucher for a free film!

I think there's a movie I need to go watch. Right now.

I'm game, this is one franchise that's really grown on me with the last 3 or 4 movies. Hopefully they are able to keep it up.

Sounds like a good time to be had!

Hah, you weren't kidding! That was quite a ride. Without naming any names, I really liked the little cameo by the very talented British actress. Glad it was a surprise. As was most of everything else, as I hadn't even seen the trailers or TV spots before watching the movie.

As per usual, pretty much everything was completely ridiculous, but that's the way I like it every now and again.

Let's not get all crazy now with "The Dark World" talk... Ragnarok is my favorite Thor movie by a long shot. Even with his short hair. ;) But the scene where that happens is also pretty funny.
Ok, saw Thor: Ragnarok, thumbs up. :)

Gladiator(2000)

Still awesome. Russell Crowe's performance is fantastic.

A great Ridley Scott movie.

Agreed, pretty good movie!

So I'm not criticizing your opinion or anything like that but I don't get the appeal of Gladiator. I thought it was just another bad guy kills good guy's family, good guy fights his way into the bad guy's (insert whatever here, team or criminal organization) and then kills bad guy. I thought at times the CG was laughable and have seen sword fighting in ton's of movies. I was very surprised when it took the oscar.

I think you can take that approach and simplicity to pretty much any movie. At the time the CGI wasn't bad, however I would imagine it hasn't aged well. Like Titanic, off the top of my head because I just watched it, and a host of other movies the graphics do not hold up well. Especially when you start converting them to HD or UHD. Gladiator came out some 18 years (plus or minus) ago.

No offense taken from me. Not everyone has to like something. :)

Two stupid movies in a row Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri and Arrival (this one a bit older, from 2016). Can't believe the high ratings on IMDb and Oscar nominations for Best Picture...

Well, re:Gladiator, I liked just about everything about it. The performances were top notch. Good story. The atmosphere was outstanding, but I don’t insist on agreement. :)

The special effects did seem a little "off"(lots of bloom, etc), but IMHO special effects don't "make" a movie for me. Fortunately the fundamentals, script, acting, direction, pacing and story made it great for me (Other example include Jaws, Alien, Superman(1977)).

I can forgive poor/dated special effects and graphics; i cannot forgive poor fundamentals (example: Titanic, Star Wars prequels, most contemporary superhero/comic-book movies.. IMHO). To each his own.

Yeah, Titanic looks horrible on tv now but it was amazing at the time in the movies. I always thought that lion (tiger?) scene in Gladiator looked horrible.

I thought the shots of the coliseum and long shots of Rome were very atmospheric. I don’t remember much other CGI.

The CG didnt really feel dated, just different. Seems like "Ridley Scott-ism" cause his recent movie "Exodus" has the same sortof look (the color palette, white balance, bloom, etc). I thought the "traditional" special effects(props, sets, costumes, makeup) in Gladiator were tops. The initial battle scene is still... wow.

Do they consider lighting effects CGI? I did not realize the percentage of films that are digitally recorded which probably puts lighting in the realm of CGI, but I don’t know for sure.

Interesting. I'd say Arrival is one of the best sci-fi movies of the last decade, it's a thoughtful, slow burn that's brilliantly acted, thought provoking and like most good sci-fi, it's a commentary on the human condition (the all the fictional elements are just a mechanism to provide that lens ...)

I think that refers to the media to which the live recording is done. The "old"(IMHO vastly higher quality) method was to 'film', with digital being to some sort of digital memory (magnetic tape, SSD, etc).

Years ago they first had digital home movie recorders that record a digital signal to magnetic tape.

Last night caught a screening of...

Tomorrow, I’m looking forward to what should be an incredible presentation of...

Isao Takahata, the Studio Ghibli director and animator, who directed 'Grave of the Flreflies'(1988) and 'The Tale of the Princess Kaguya'(2013) among many other films, passed away last month at the age of 82.

I missed Kaguya a few weeks ago, unfortunately. It’s stunning. The theater where I saw it upon initial US release was simply awful. The blu-ray is wonderful but I’m kicking myself I couldn’t work in a screening. I won’t let that happen with Fireflies, a film that should be required viewing — even for those not into animation.

I’ve traditionally had issues with Batman movies, they are all too dark. The ones by Tim Burton were the worst. Of the bunch, I consider The Dark Knight to be the best and incredible. Did it kill Heath Ledger?

The Dark Knight is my favorite movie of all time. It’s not just a super hero movie either. It’s just an amazing movie.

I FINALLY watched "All the President's Men" last night, so very good.

Glad to have seen it at last although it's with regrets. My father died almost 3 weeks ago after a difficult year of strokes and I really had wanted to watch it with him as he had worked at the WaPo since 1970 in Editorial/Communications and lived that period in ground zero. I tried but even 5 months ago it was too late. Before he fell ill it felt too awkward, in a way, to bring up this movie. My mother is freakishly old-school about never allowing my brothers & me to ask a male relative about their work and she instilled that rather well, unfortunately. We're only learning cool stuff about our Dad since he died & I've been scanning various docs.

Despite the personal back story, this is a terrific movie, even decades later. I love the jolting typewriter key strikes during the opening. WaPo newsroom was a terrific recreation, recognized it immediately from having seen it as a kid. The ensemble acting was great.

BTW I made my mother watch it with me. She was super resistant at first but was soon engrossed. That is saying something.
