He didn't go, he swam at the Y :)

They've been mostly killing it with the live (or "live") action remakes. Lion King looks positioned to be another win, did $23M at Thursday night previews, projected for a $190-200M opening weekend, already at $130M international.

I won't see it, even on free streaming, looks like an abomination and I'm not 5 :D

Note to self: learn to read.

I'd consider double the budget successful. Dumbo, Christopher Robin and Mary Poppins are three properties that didn't do well despite just edging double budget. It's really weird because I'd have expected by now that Disney has done the math and science behind what sells. Though I doubt they care much now since they own a lot of IP.

Did you like it? All the reviews I read were BRUTAL.
I did not see it, as I was swimming while the family viewing took place. The kids said they liked it (easy to please kids) and my wife said she liked it better than the original. For me, it was definitely a been there done that so I passed.

Regarding reviews, another critical fail for Disney, while their pockets fill with cash. Maybe it is the desperate sheep who are the failures. I’ll project, stop rewarding Disney with $$$ when they offer sub standard fare like Star Wars eps 7,8,9.

Which do Disney want? Critical acclaim or box office success?

I’m sure they’d like both, but if they had to choose I know which one!

Currently watching Ghost in the shell.

Not great but winds away a couple of hours. Feels like it’s not sure if it wants to be Bladerunner or a computer game.

The one with Scarlett? God, I’m trying to remember how much of that I saw. I might have been on an airplane.

Revisiting the slightly gory, quite comic book The Kid with the Golden Arm.

These subtitles make me laugh hard.:p

:p:eek: I doubt the actual Mandarin term is that goofy.

Anyway, that’s Silver Spear, the second-in-command of the Deadly Valley gang who want to steal the gold an escort security bureau are carting through their territory. Silver Spear is saying this to drunken master good guy Sheriff Hai Tao.

Lu Feng usually plays great villains in these, but this character is a wonderful dumb a$$. :D Great fighter though. This movie is a blast. Definitely check your brain at the door and just enjoy. I dig it.

The iffy subtitles are yet another reason why I love Shaw Brothers movies so much. Once in a while, something like this pops up.

The Lion King(2019)
They stayed true to the original, which is a good thing IMHO. Looked fantastic to me. I dont know if its because i’m older now, but it felt kinda “rushed”.
The voice talents of Jeremy Irons, Whoppie Goldberg, Rowan Atkinson and Elton John were missed.
Not to diss this remake/reimagining, but i preferred the animated movie.

Apple vs oranges, but i felt this was a better conversion than The Jungle Book.

Ari Aster: Midsommar (2019)

Hoo boy. Brilliant film. Really uncomfortable at times, at others surreally funny but grade A filmmaking all the way. The physical manifestations of grief and emotional distress seem to almost be characters of their own in Aster's films, and he sure knows how to write and direct them. It doesn't exactly hurt that the whole cast is really, really great. What Toni Collette brought to Hereditary, Florence Pugh brings to Midsommar. A stellar performance in a role that couldn't have been easy to nail. Huge props to her. The soundtrack was great as well.

I'm guessing that this film is going to linger in my mind for quite a while, and I can't wait for the rumored 30 extra minutes the director's cut is supposed to feature when released on home media.

This weekend was movie filled! Went to the theatre to see "Spiderman:Far From Home". Great addition to the MCU! Action filled and had a really good story, as usual.
Also watched "Predestination" from Netflix. Based on Robert Heinlein's story "All You Zombies". A very twisty time travel story that I actually enjoyed. It was acting and story based, not a SFX movie, at all. A good movie out of Australia!

Watched the first few parts of the animated Discworld movie, "Soul Music". Good adaption of the book, even if the animation wasn't great.

Okay.

Finally got around to watching the newest Hellboy.

I liked it, sorry.

I prefer Ron Perlman in the lead role but David Harbour wasn't that bad.

I also prefer Del Toro as the director but what can you do?

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
Thumbs up or down?

Great movie. Too bad the sequel was terrible.
I liked the original, was able to suspend disbelief, was able to overlook Randy Quaid’s character. ;) I’ve not seen the sequel and can’t remember why I did not see it. I assume it was panned.
