The Lion King (2019). This movie is realistic to a way that is impossible to describe. It should win the Oscars for best CGI and scenography because it's breathtaking. However, it's also its main problem. It looks like a beautiful documentary that has been dubbed by youtubers using the audio from the original cartoon. In other words, this movie has no soul. Even the most dramatic scene is not that dramatic due to the total lack of expression of the characters.

I reckon they should have toned down the realism a notch and “Pixar-ified” it a little to achieve something like this...

Damn it, I knew I should not have rented this movie: Hellboy (2019)- not even close to the original. I made it 40 minutes in concluding the giant hunt, and then decided to cut my losses. The atmosphere had no where the mystical qualities of the original, and music really helped kill the vibe. David Harbour was not tremendously bad, but he was no Ron Perlman.

LOL, I had the same feelings back in 2013 about Oldboy. It desecrated whatever goodness the 2003 film delivered.

I still liked it.

The Abyss(1989)
The characters were very 'cookie cutter', and the script was mediocre. Great special effects for the time tho. Overall, not a fan.

Tony Scott: The Last Boy Scout (1991)

Another one of those films I can just watch any time the mood (to watch anything) strikes. Bruce Willis plays the part of Joe Hallenbeck, the perpetually hungover and surly private investigator, to perfection, and Damon Wayans does a great job playing Jimmy Dix, a pro football player (with obscenely expensive leather pants) whose path happens to cross that of Hallenbeck's with dramatic, and often hilarious results.

The action is great, the dialogue (written (mostly) by none other than Shane Black) doesn't miss a beat, and the film just works. It appears that many people involved in the production weren't actually that happy with how the film turned out, but what can I say. Definitely one of my favorite Bruce Willis films, and another great one in Tony Scott's impressive filmography.

I never saw that, and of course now I want to watch it!

EDIT: ok now I've acquired it and watched it three times. Totally adorable. Made my day and will be kept on my laptop's internal drive for reruns whenever I need a bad day rebooted. :)

Watched "Shazam!" with the family last night. It was a really good DCEU movie, better than some of the others, in fact. Lots of Easter eggs for DC fans. It was well written and they paid a great deal of attention to the Shazam continuity and content in the comics. Definitely two thumbs up!

Mickey Blue Eyes(1999)
A blend of awkward&dark comedy, with Manhattan for the background. I liked it, despite the luke-warm reception and reviews. Many actors who ended up on the Sopranos in this one.

Ready Player One. It started really slowly, and I pretty much couldn't sit still. It got better, and by the end I didn't think it was half bad. From the beginning, you know how it has to end, and it does.

I just watched that on HBO before it left the channel last month. I hadn't seen it before and had my doubts about how much I might enjoy it. But I ended up liking it overall.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I missed over half the cultural references, but even that was fun.

Loved 'Ready Player One'. Watched it at least 4 times. RPO started us on the path to aquiring a real VR machine.

Great experience so far, and more to come. Perhaps RPO has predicted the future of human interaction.

Shane Black: The Predator (2018)

What a hot mess. It was 99 cents on iTunes so I thought I'd watch it, even after reading some less than stellar reviews. Turns out there would have been better ways to spend a hundred minutes. For example by watching the original for the fiftieth time. Some good stuff here and there, but on the whole if not a complete waste of time, at least close to it.

At least it looked great in HDR.

Conan The Barbarian(1982)
I don't seem to be getting tired of watching this one. The 'practical effects' make me appreciate it even more. Phenomenal soundtrack as well.

I never fully appreciated the number of sci-fi/fantasy movies Arnie has been in. Cool stuff.
