The Misty Mountains
I am sad to hear of the passing of actor Ian Holm, perhaps most widely known for his role as Bilbo Baggins. I am a fan of a couple of his lesser known roles: Mitchell Stephens in The Sweet Hereafter and Pascal in Big Night.

I fondly remember Ian Holm in 4 significant movies which are just a sliver of his portfolio and centered on a favorite genre (link):
  • Alien (1979) as crew member Ash.
  • The Fifth Element (1997) as Cornelius, a priest involved in prophecy.
  • Lord of the Rings (2001-2003) as Bilbo Baggins.
  • Day After Tomorrow (2004) as a scientist.

Aliens (1986) But the 1991 Special Edition on Blu-ray Disc.

Aliens is a great film, an impressive sequel, but I want to know who prefers the original release over the extended scenes? There is only one extended scene I like, and no it’s not Bill Paxton riffing on the way down to the planet ;), it’s the sentry guns. I really disliked the family going out to the signal. :)

Just finished watching "JoJo Rabbit". What a great movie! I highly recommend it. Taika did an awesome job and delivered a great film!

Tremendously creative movie with a real emotional impact.

According to IMDb, the Predator only had 8 minutes of screen time in the movie. How’s that for build up and suspense?
I would have thought more Predator time. :) I love Predator because as I recall it’s Arnold emerging as an A List action star, showing a real level of confidence. I did not care for his previous role as Conan.

Margin Call(2011)
I decided to watch this one again. And ... it has aged rather well IMHO. The personality-types/roles/egos who work in that environment are well represented, with stellar performances all around.

Craziest movie I’ve ever watched in my life.
857fac0aad4bbeddd2f5f87dfca9f902.jpg

One of my favorite movies with Ben Affleck (Rosamund Pike was just as good). It’s one of those movies that provokes thought and makes you wonder if it was actually possible for a person in a ‘corrupted marriage‘ if they could actually go to the length of attempting to frame a husband for a murder. The amount of detail, planning and scheming to pull off white Rosamund Pike’s character did in this movie, was pieced together.

Even though Neil Patrick Harris only had a few scenes in this movie, you couldn’t ask for a better performance of someone who struggles with obsession and overall the ‘creepy guy character‘.

I shared my thoughts on this movie back in January here- [Scroll to the bottom of thread.]

K-Pax [2001]

This was actually on TV not that long ago, but a decent movie. Kevin Spacey plays a character that mysteriously arrives on planet earth, but he claims he’s from another planet system that’s been unidentified, and Jeff Bridges character in the movie is a clinical psychologist that is attempting to find out who he is and why he believes that he’s from another solar system.

When you watch this movie, you get the sense that Jeff Bridges character as a psychologist is trying to debunk Kevin Spacey‘s theories of why he’s not (Or can’t be) from another planet, but Kevin Spacey‘s character has such a way of putting Bridges ‘in his place’ with a lot of clever dialogue from Spacey to indicate how cunning and intelligent he really is. It’s essentially a lot of ‘mind games’ threaded into different scenes between both characters. [As Someone with a psych background like myself] I get a kick of how both characters are trying to stay one step ahead of each other, the film really is interesting towards the end to determine if Spacey is fabricating or genuine.

[The movie has some really nice musical score nuances in the film, really well composed.]

A few days ago director Joel Schumacher sadly passed away. I've wanted to rewatch The Lost Boys for quite some time now, and tonight was going to be the night. Imagine my surprise when I get to the shelf my movies are on, and the DVD is nowhere to be seen. I could've sworn I own the film but it turns out I do not. Interesting. Well, since it was 80's vampires I was in the mood for, fortunately there was another old favorite to watch instead.

Tom Holland: Fright Night (1985)

Charley Brewster is living the normal life of a teenager. His interest in TV's vampire killer Peter Vincent sometimes trumps his interest in his girlfriend Amy, but such can be the turbulent life of a teenager. One evening he spots a couple of men carrying a big box of some sort into the newly moved in house next to his, and once the news reports of murder victims found nearby start increasing he begins to suspect that there might be someone, or something sinister living next door to him.

A classic, this one. Still one of my favorite vampire movies despite everything. And by everything I mean the general 80'sness this movie is chock full of. The acting is a bit over the top at times, but that sort of goes with the territory so no harm no foul. The actors are good in their roles, and the movie is as fun to watch as it was the first time I saw it. The effects range from "huh..?" to "wow!", and the only thing I don't quite like is the soundtrack. The Lost Boys wins in that department hands down. All in all a fun movie to watch every now and again while drinking a couple of beers.

There's a 2011 remake directed by Craig Gillespie starring Anton Yelchin as Charley and Colin Farrell as Jerry, and while it's obviously not the original it actually wasn't that bad if memory serves. They did somewhat butcher the Peter Vincent character, though, by making him look like Criss Angel instead of the (obviously) Peter Cushing / Vincent Price -type of character in the original, but I guess it was a better look for more modern audiences to connect with, plus the fact that the newer version does takes place in the Las Vegas area. David Tennant did do a great job with the role though.

Threads the most frightening film that you should watch.
Threadsjpg.jpg

Dated yes, equally the one thing we should all strive to prevent. Powerful and emotive, one of the few to really touch the subject with a sense of reality.

There's more if anyone is interested, with some being banned for many a year due to the accuracy and the horror...

It's a movie if heard much about, and I'm so glad I finally got to watching it.

Everything I'd heard about was true about this production - and it did not disappoint: Manos: The Hands of Fate.

This is a movie that anyone voting 1/10 on IMDB should be forced to watch. It's the sort of film that makes Plan 9 feel like 2001. It plotting makes Tommy Wiseau's The Room feel like The Godfather. Untrained chimps armed with a camera could have filmed it better.

In short it was wonderfully diabolically awful. The only redeeming feature was that it was over in just 70 minutes.

I'd rate the acting but that would sort if indicate that there was any effort to act at all. The pacing, script and music were all up there with some of the worst porno movies fun the 70s, yet the film was totally free of almost any titillation whatsoever.

The only horror here was the knowledge this was even made in the first place. Great for insomniacs...

It's currently being streamed on Amazon Prime in the US (If you dare...or hate yourself enough and feel masochistic).

Spider-Man 2 (2004)- 82% RTAS. This has to be a tie with the original, with an edge because it offers closure regarding the what about Mary Jane issue, we experienced in the original and waited 2 years to see. Plus it includes the most violent PG-13 non-blood scene I can remember, where Doc Ock wakes up in the hospital. :D

I remember watching it on the Beeb when it was first broadcast. Did nothing to help quell my fear of nuclear war that was already at fever pitch back then. Doubly so since I was on the dole at the time, looking for work and already feeling depressed.

Another book/movie that's the same theme but couldn't be more different if it tried, is Raymond Brigg's "When the wind blows".

I've got Threads on disk, others will likely chime in.

Others that are notable:
The War Game
The Bedford Incident
By Dawn's Early Light
Fail Safe (1964 & 2000)
On The Beach (1959 & 2000)
Dr Stranglove
The Day After
Twilight's Last Gleaming

There's more on or aligned with the subject, Threads and The War Game (banned in the UK for over 20 years) are particularly harrowing. The Bedford Incident powerful performances the say the least. As I was serving in Germany during the 80's -90's I simply never saw as they were simply banned for obvious reasons.

Subject did touch me deeply as from our perspective some of the alerts were not solely drills, until told otherwise. The Chernobyl power plant disaster in Ukraine was indeed tragic, equally a catalyst and wake up call to the sheer destruction nuclear war would reek and that even low yield tactical weapons would be devastating to all...
