Last night couldn't get to sleep, so I do as I always do in this situation.

I put this in the DvD player.

I have watched this film many times, and I still don't really understand it, I keep hoping that there will one day be a Eureka moment.

I loved his other film from 2001 Donnie Darko, see my avatar.

I watched the re-make of "Total Recall" last night.

Many remakes are inferior to the original, and this is no exception. Aside from the visuals, this was, IMO, boring junk. Just another chase movie. No plot, mediocre direction, and an appallingly bad script.

At least the original had a bit of creativity and originality to it...a tiny bit of complexity. The remake has nothing original. Even Ahnold, not by any standards a terrific (good?...mediocre?) actor brought something to the film than better actors than he could not bring to the remake...the script was so awful, nobody could do anything with it.

The visuals were very good...but anyone with a bucketload of money to throw at the screen, and a decent art director, can do good visuals now. And at the beginning of the film, Doug's neighborhood was a direct rip-off of (or, to be extremely generous, an homage to) "Blade Runner".

See the original, and give this mistake a pass...

Edit: I just re-read this, and it sounds kind of snotty. Sorry...just one man's opinion!

Saw the new GI Joe movie last night, Retaliation. It was pretty much what I expected it to be, lots of over the top fighting and explosions. For the kid like me who grew up with GI Joe action figures, toys, comics, and the cartoon, they put in plenty of goodies like vehicles, classic plot twists, and of course favorite characters. If you want to be nostalgic and are looking for fun then by all means see it. If you expect something brilliant from the plot, have trouble with suspension of disbelief, or want it to be faithful to the original story or the first movie, then save yourself heartache and time and just skip it.

I liked it simply for the fun factor. :D

Good to hear, that's my background, too. Have you seen the first one? I saw it because of nostalgic reasons too, and was pretty disappointed, if the second is like the first, I'm not going to see it. Not going to ruin my memories more than necessary. :D

Your review matches my opinion too.

The only scene I found particularly entertaining was when Quaid is walking thru the transit center in disguise, and the woman in front of him in line is the woman Arnold was disguised as in the original movie!

You can see the scene here.

Sad commentary that the only scene we both agree was fun was a scene almost completely lifted from the original!!:D

Netflixed a movie I never even heard of before: thin ice. Very good. Kind of Fargo-ish. Just saw Olympus had fallen. Meh.

I did see the first one and thought it was pretty similar to this one in that it was just a fun summer action movie. If you are looking for them to remain true to history of GI Joe then you might be disappointed with some of the plot and character decisions. However, like many comic/toy/cartoon lines there are already multiple histories and versions of the story. I'd say my opinion of the first and second films are about the same. See it for fun and don't take it too seriously.

I think it says something that the best character he ever played was a robot.

I will give him credit that, with some exceptions, he picks parts that he can handle. I thought he was also "right" in the original "Total Recall". He seems to acknowledge his limitations, and unlike other non-actors who are "acting", at least he's not trying doing "Hamlet"!!:D

Thanks for the reminder about this one, just found the Cannes Edition with the missing 20 odd minutes intact. Let the overacting ensue!

Not exactly a movie per se, but I'm watching the ♫ concert ♫ of Norah Jones & The Handsome Band from New Orleans in 2002 while sipping on my home-made latté. :)

Watched E.T. with my daughter today (as she is feeling ill). Why has nobody ever made a sequel? With all the remakes Hollywood keep pushing out they could have the return visit. I'm sure most of the original cast would be up for that!

The last 5 movies that I've watched:

Drive
A mysterious Hollywood stuntman, mechanic and getaway driver lands himself in trouble when he helps out his neighbour.

Limitless
A writer discovers a top-secret drug which bestows him with super human abilities.

Trek Nation
This documentary follows Eugene Roddenberry, son of "Star Trek" creator Gene, as he tries to figure out why his dad's show has become such a success.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on an "unexpected journey" to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug.

Boy Wonder
A traumatized boy grows into a shy, determined teenager who patrols the mean streets of New York City, helping those in need and dishing out severe punishment to remorseless thugs.
