When I was in college I became involved with the Friday Night dorm movie, and I create the posters to advertise what was being shown. It was there that I discovered Casablanca and became enamored with it. :)
One of my favorite "fun facts" is that, in the cafe scene where they are all singing "La Marseillaise", most of the extras in the background were French refugees who had escaped to the US. The tears you see are genuine. This movie was made in 1942, before they knew who would win.

The Magnificent Seven (1960)- I was seven when this came out. All star cast. I maybe sentimental, but this is better than the remake.
The remake is horrendous. If anybody is thinking of watching it, don't bother wasting precious life on it!

Casablanca

No words needed...
I believe it's the best movie script ever written. And one of the best movies ever made.

I watched the Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent recently. Interesting. It's a pity the 3rd act couldn't live up to the first two acts, but I think films of this nature rarely can deliver in the 3rd act. Think Adaptation and The Player. Still a fun watch as are the other two flicks I mention.

I also watched the Debt Collectors. B grade indie film. Could have and should have been far better but it went for the easy option every single time and made something that could have been interesting rather boring. Pity.

I wonder if you showed Casablanca to a typical 20 year old, what would they say about it? Is the appeal, generational or universal?

I remember growing up in the 1950-60s watching titles like Angry Red Planet, The Thing From Another World, Forbidden Planet (which was ahead of it’s time), and I remember seeing silent movies, thinking how unworthy as compared to this great stuff I was watching. :) However later I actually figured out that there are silent movies that are impressive, maybe great, featuring actors like Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd among others. The full General movie can be watched on YouTube, not this link:

There is a generation factor. Pre-tv, my dad bought a silent movie projector and we watched silent movies.
Today I find computer generated movies so over the top..they're kinda lacking reality..or something
I like the 70s to 90s movies cos they have a 'real' factor..even if it's obviously a scaled model.

Take the movie 'The Blue Max' for example. The scene where two pilots see who is the better flyer. One flies under a bridge. That scene was repeated a number of times to get the shot right. They had sheep there sos to scatter to show the audience that it was real.. But with repeated shots, the sheep got used to it and didn't move. They had to get a guy (off screen) to chase them...

Thing is - that plane fitted thru under that bridge with only a meter of clearance at each wing tip...

Absolutely a timeless classic, so cleverly & beautifully executed by the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock. TBH the 2020 remake is not too shabby either.

Rebecca (2020)

Plays true homage to the original without disturbing the underlying principles. The 2020 film brings the story up to date for our modern age...

Both are well worth the watch :)

I remember my Ma talking about the 1940 one. Apparently it was a trick question to ask folks, "who played Rebecca?"

This is my last movie:

Very much agree as most films come across today as just being phoney, over relying on bad acting & CGI as opposed to the true talent of actors, directors & writers. Right now Hollyweird is on a totally destructive path isolating audiences and destroying franchises, worse still preaching. Average people aren't going to suffer that, let alone pay for it...

The Blue Max, hell of a film a blast from the past and one well worth the watch and its on my media server :)

When actors actually acted & directors had freedom. As as opposed to producers living out their sad personal fantasies. Any other business these idiots would have been put out the door in an instant...

Simple solution I'm not willing to watch or pay for garbage. I'd far rather watch older films where the talent is obvious and storylines make sense...

Yesterday I watched this with some excellent acting talents (not) :) Anyway, brains off and...

The visually most impressive scene in the movie was the Gate of souls with these women painted in gold. Really creative!

Im looking forward to seeing the current remake of 'All quiet on the western front'...the 1930 version.
As a teenager I watched it..and experienced a 'cold sweat' for the first time.. the scene where the german machine gunner was desperately shooting attacking french soldiers before they got to the trench..

I thought that was bad...but this year discovered a lot was cut out of the film recording I saw:

"The Most Brutal Battle Scene You've Never Heard Of."
