I saw Oppenheimer 70mm imax this past weekend. The movie most reminded me of lawrence of arabia in a lot of ways. Cillian murphy's performance is what holds the whole movie together. as a phd student myself it was cool to see so many famous physicists being portrayed in the movie.

The scene with the cork always... always cracks me up!!!!

I have kids so we watched the little mermaid remake.. it was good to watch and kids liked it enough but i was not impressed mainly due to the music as the songs weren’t as fun.

I’ve not been a fan of any of the live action remakes. I think I would prefer they reanimate them to a modern standard and use the original audio.

my kids preferred the original songs as well.

El Topo (1970) by Alejandro Jodorowsky.

Talk about a strange, weird, deep western movie! Another masterpiece by Jodorowsky which his highly recommended. It’s not your typical western. I think that the third act drags a little bit at times, but that’s really a
minor complaint.

Agreed on all fronts. The only ones I somewhat found decent are The Beauty and the Beast, and Cinderella. And even those were somewhat underwhelming. The Lion King should’ve never, ever been made.

And now let’s brace for the new Snow White which seems to be headed to a serious crash and burn.

Maybe it's the CGI. In the old days things were either animated or live action. Now they can meld the two together so they're just going over our childhood cartoons.

I do like the Cinderella story with Drew Barrymore... but I don't know if that was a Disney backed product or not.

The only way to make any of these live-action remakes is if they do something different than the animated original, which for the most part (minus malificient i guess) they aren't doing.

i saw the jungle book remake and i personally thought it was decent but still really missed the liveliness of the animated versions. all the animated versions of these movies take advantage of the medium to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. in contrast the live action remakes just come off as soulless corporate products designed by a committee which is all disney is now. a terrible way the industry is headed

Last night I watched The Appointment, a low budget, independent, super creepy horror film made in 1981. It never had a cinema release, just shown at a few film festivals and on US and UK TV. It had virtually disappeared but has been rescued and restored by the wonderful folk at the BFI and given a Blu-ray release. Highly recommend.

I enjoyed the Jungle book but perhaps because I wasn't that emotionally tied to the original cartoon.

The Lion King, Aladdin and the little mermaid were all films I watched a million times as a kid and have very fond memories of them so maybe I'm biased but my kids all preferred the original cartoons. even though the cartoon quality is very dated.

I was annoyed on the Little Mermaid how they changed the lyrics to kiss the girl to include consent.. never have I ever heard of anyone being offended by that song or that its condones forcing yourself onto someone.. its just an innocent song in my mind

Barbie (2023)
Meh.

I am certainly not the target audience, but I think that as a movie it’s just badly written. Lots of loose parts and weak subplots. Jokes were mostly predictable and unfunny. On this note, the audience at my theater - including yours truly - laughed for the first 15 minutes, then at the 756th joke on the patriarchy the room became more silent than a cemetery at night. Dialogue is weak and inconsistent, with at least three overly long and cliched drops, which leads me to believe they didn’t know how to be subtle. I also noticed people playing on their phone at about the last quarter of the movie. Asked wife and friends, all had similar opinions.
On the positive: incredible marketing. Visuals are just amazing. Ryan Gosling is an amazing actor.

One disclaimer: I have been waiting to watch this since the first stills were released, and I did NOT watch or read a single review about it because I knew it was going to be somewhat controversial and I did want to enjoy this.

We have been watching Sherlock Holmes from the '80s, with Jeremy Brett.

Delightfully intellectual without any language. Well, really, English, as she is spoke...

Think I’ll rent Dungeons and Dragons later on today. Now it’s at a reasonable price. I’ve heard mostly alright things about it.

Mission Impossible : Dead Reckoning Part 1 (2023)

wow! What a great action movie, and with an actual interesting plot! Insane stunts by Tom Cruise. Action packed, and good acting. I am also impressed that the Italians in the movie (lots of it shot in Rome and Venice) are actual Italians 😂 although Tom Cruise speaking Italian is a bit… goofy. However, great movie. Watch it at the theater.

Showgirls!

This movie is so incredibly bad. The dialogue is horrendous and the characters so horrible and cardboard, that even David Lynch squirmed at the over the top melodrama. I’m sure AI could write a better script and dialogue! but Elizabeth Berkeley commits and gives it everything she has and that makes it fascinating.

Nothing too heavy here either but it is rather fun:
the portable door.jpg

On my best movies of 2023 list. Light entertainment but no cutting and pasting from other movies. Totally original, had no idea where it was going. Ending was a bit standard, but there was a twist.

In some ways the opposite of The Portable Door. Visually drab and the first 3/4 of the movie was somewhat boring with scenes of massive piles of paperwork being shuffled around and ignored by bored bureaucrats. The payoff came in the last quarter of the film. It was quite moving and worth the wait. A people film.
