On my list to see…

I do want to see this one as well.

Interesting that Demi is up for an Oscar considering she's also in hot water for her connection to p diddy and her former nit wit husband Ashton Kutcher... and the video of her kissing that kid...

The Substance

Incredible Film! If you're faint of heart maybe skip it. Otherwise its stunning and f-ed up in so many ways

This is on my list too, it looks messed up from the trailer and that poster picture! I did read what it was about and it sounds good lol. I mean Poor Things was messed up and I thought it was one of the most genius films I’ve seen.

Ok, The Substance (2024)- This movie is a disappointment. Suprised that at rogerebert.com it got a 3/4 rating, and at Rotten Tomatoes, 75% audience and 89% critic rating. It’s styilized, overacting by some characters on purpose to set a mood, nice camera angles to give it an artistic feel, an intriguing premise, and delimma that kept me going until the bazaare off the wall climax, which it’s possible some of you might enjoy. 😊 But for myself, it goes from having great potential as horror to farcical. You might just laugh at the ridiculousness of the ending, and maybe that’s what the director wanted.

Dark City (1998)

From the director of the Crow (1994). Dark City is a superbly crafted dark, complex & intelligent Sci-Fi thriller that remains to be unconventional & entertaining. Similar to Blade Runner (1982) has shades of cyberpunk & film noir and never ages...

What movie have you seen and more importantly was it any good? :)

Watched Shutter Island, a psychological thriller. It just did not click for me. Without giving the story away, it took a turn I did not expect, which is not necessarily bad, but the execution was below my expectations.

On the other hand we just finished up the Lord of the Rings trilogy for the umpteenth time. You don't see epics like this very often. :)

If you ever wondered how they made 6' tall actors hobbit size, besides using short doubles for long shots, this is another method- forced perspective.

Deepwater Horizon (2016)

Am in the industry, so know how it rolls and it hits hard. One of the culprits of Deepwater Horizon tried it on, was a job in PNG. Didn't wash with me, said I want to see the cement bond log period, who pays I dont care... Check your contract.

Have suspended drilling operations for good reason, cost is high, equally the cost in life far higher. 100/100 push to the limit, but know where the limit lies...

Yeah just like with Chernobyl, chasing profits and pushing limits to reduce time not producing, just leads to one thing… and it happens time and again sadly. The film is very good and Wallberg did a good job in it.

The mini series on Chernobyl is excellent, really captures the chaos & events of the day... I was based in Germany in 86, when the reactor blew no one knew exactly. All we knew was we were heading east, loaded our vehicle's on the train. We were close the border before being stood down...

I’ve seen that mini series twice. It was fantastic, so well done. The way he explained what happened at the end was brilliant how he used the tiles to show how the entire system became imbalanced and thus blew up.

SciFi Movie reccomendations. Thoughts?

5. Vesper
4. Cold Skin (Amazon)
3. Otherlife (Amazon)
2. Rememory (Netflix)
1. Passengers (Netflix)

Vesper, Other life, and Rememory maybe worthy, but that’s a maybe. Cold skin, I can’t say. :) I saw Passengers at the theater and was disappointed in this because it was deceivingly marketed as a scify thriller, when actually it’s primarily a love story set in space. I should watch it again and give it a second chance.

I'll have a dig into my media server as have a good few films/documentaries related to Chernobyl. Would like to visit Chernobyl & Pripyat one day if money & time allows. While a disaster, Chernobyl in many respects made the world a safer place as it woke up leaders to the futility of a nuclear conflict. A lesson that should never be unlearnt...

Lifeforce (DC)
STALKER
Ghost in the Shell
Under the Skin
Dredd
Phantoms
Pandorum
RoboCop (DC) while you still can the OG 1987, not the hapless remake. Have on disk so rock solid here...
Pitch Black
The Empty Man, not really SciFi but last of 20th Century Fox's films before being bought out by the evil empire...
Supernova
Sphere
Leviathon
Life
Infini
Kill Command
Chappie
Doom
Alien Outbreak
Artic Void
Not SciFi but a must watch - Dust Devil (DC)
Europa Report

Should keep you out of trouble for a spell LOL. Could go on as have well over 2K films on the server, mostly horror & SciFi...

Cold Skin is OK, but more on the Lovecraftian side than SciFi. Passengers not bad, but wilfully & wrongly promoted. Had good production, but felt like a TVM, watched maybe twice gave the disk to a friend.

I still don’t know to this day how they managed to get those effects in Kill Command for the budget it had! Astounding work. Good film if a bit odd. Good list there.

A lot to like about this film, smart with the money, smarter with the story :) Nor does it age, not scary but something deeply unsettling between the visuals & audio, very cleverly done...

Not sure how you can watch that over and over again. I am a Christian and watching Jesus basically being tortured for the entire movie is not something I want to rewatch again and again. It was powerful one time, and that was enough for me.

Apparently they are in production of the next movie, I believe it is spanning the time from crucification to resurrection, so those 3 days.

The YouTube video link I posted, there’s an image of a blue woman with glasses sitting on a table with a tablet in her lap, and a dude in white armor standing in front of her. I would assume that this image comes from one of the movies in this video, but I watched it again and see nothing like this in any of the movies. If I had to guess it might be Otherlife or Passengers. This is a long shot, but any ideas what movie that is from? 😳

I looked online to see if there something like “ID this movie”, actually found one, uploaded the image, but it did not ID the movie.

The best film of 2024 that I've seen (so far):

I'm Still Here (2024)

I've only seen one other Brazilian film, in a college course. This makes me want to explore that country's cinema further.

It reminded me a bit of "Roma", but a little more harrowing.
