John Huston before David Lynch was David Lynch, Coen Bros before they were the Coen Bros.

Not a bad film. But it was odd.

I've never read this novel by O'Connor... I may have to seek it out.

Castle Freak (1995)
1752886369466.png

A family inherits an Italian castle where strange occurrences abound, the father becomes mysteriously affected by the castle's dark presence. As they unravel the castles secrets, something sinister begins to emerge...

A loose adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft's The Outsider, directed by Stuart Gordon of Re-Animator fame. Not bad by any means. If into HPL likely won't disappoint.

That was weirdly reminiscent of Luke Skywalker taking out the Death Star.

On a side note. After the DS has exploded and Han says "that was one in a million". It cuts to Luke and he saying a prayer to himself and you hear Obi Wan's voice, "Remember.. The force will be with you..Always" Luke opens his eyes and his expression changes from a farm boy to a star fighter with purpose. That part hits me right in the chest. The arc of that character.

Rewatched Rogue One this weekend after having run through all of Andor. Wow it sure feels different now, I think the writers producers did pretty well to have them fit together. It felt like seeing all the pieces moving into place over the 5 years before Yavin (even longer in fact counting some of the back stories) for both the Rebel Alliance as it came together and the Empire with it's superweapon the Death Star into the climax of the battles of Scarif and Yavin. Kind of like the long preparation for D-Day (two years or so) or the Partisan liberation of Yugoslavia (and all the infighting between the different resistance groups and collaborators). Pretty emotional end.

Have yet to watch but one a mate told me about: Kill the Irishman

Watched Jurassic World last night.

Overall an enjoyable movie with great CGI, an okay story, but full of unlikable characters. There were only 3 characters in the movie I liked and they're all minor characters: the rich guy, Masrani, the black dude, Barry and the little brother, Gray.

While he had comically low screen time, Dr. Wu exuded mad scientist villainy. I'm 98% certain the dino he cooked up with its thermoptic camo was intentional. He show zero remorse and brushed off people dying as if it were a statistical anomaly. At least the gravy seal guy, Hoskins, got what he deserved in the end. You're not fit for field work anymore, Vic. The big brother, Zach, is the reason I root for the killer in horror flicks. Stupid teens.

I only have a two complaints about the movie: 1) Chris Pratt's acting and 2) aunt Claire spent the entire movie in stiletto heels. Trudging through a jungle/forests in heels? Being chased by a T Rex in heels? Come on, Hollywood. At least have her change into some comfy shoes.

I’m sure everyone watched The Dark Knight here, but it’s been a while and I kind of forgot some pieces.

In today’s state of movies, it feels even better than the first time I saw it. Not only the themes, the acting and the story are all excellent, but you don’t get bored one second during the duration of the movie. There is no downtime.

Just watched Creations of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms.
Creation_of_the_Gods_I_Kingdom_of_Storms.jpg

It deviates from the source material on a lot of plot points to the point I consider it a fan fiction. They didn't use the official title, Fengshen Yanyi, so it's all good. Comparing the movie Da Ji and the book Da Ji is the same as comparing a kitten to a Siberian tiger. Oddly enough, I prefer how the movie starts to how the book starts.🤫 The movie starts with a battle to put down a rebellion. The battle scene is worthy of being the climax of a ancient war movie. The book starts with the Emperor writing a poem about how the Goddess, Nuwa, is so sexy, so very sexy.🤨

The visual is stunning. I can't wait to watch the sequel.

I saw a sneak preview of this kid-friendly monster movie. It's silly, funny, and entertaining. I recommend seeing the movie without watching the trailer, which gives away too many of the surprises.

Bring Her Back (2025)

One of the better “horror” films I’ve seen of late, though more disturbing than scary. Impressive performances from the cast, particularly the actress who plays the partially blind girl who is herself partially blind and had never acted before.
