Bit by bit…By bit he carved a nightmare! A serial killer, plagued by the memory of a fatal car accident, uses various tools to murder female tenants of a Los Angeles apartment complex, then abducts a teenaged girl who lives there with her family. When the police express doubt that the murders are connected to the girl’s disappearance, her brother sets out to search for her on his own... It’s got that 70’s aesthetic that I love and it’s kind of downbeat, but it’s also sleazy. Very much being late 70's exploitation.

Two things --

First, the hole in the wall is a real thing. I think that you can actually go up to the door, and if it isn't frozen shut, look out.
Second the event being caught on the rope is a real thing. Happened some decades ago when one of a group of climbers got caught with a knot in the rope. Couldn't climb up, couldn't slide down. His mates couldn't get to him to save him, and he died, overnight, hanging on the rock. There is a doco somewhere about it.

The Great Wall.

Imagine eating a meal prepared using the finest ingredients, seasoned with excellent spices, yet ending up tasting like 💩. That my friend is what watching The Great Wall felt like. You have A-list actors in Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal and William Defoe. You have one of Hong Kong's top box office draw in Andy Lau (bigger draw than Jackie Chan). You have a gorgeous leading lady in Jing Tian. There is also some excellent F/X and stunt work. Yet the movie as a whole is worse than the sum of its parts.

The nonsensical story coupled with cliche and tired movie tropes torpedoed what should have been a good movie. William (Matt Damon) is superhero merger of Captain America and Hawkeye. He's an archer extraordinaire who gains a Chinese "Bucky Barnes." Upon first seeing the shield design, I knew he would do the signature Captain America shield throw. Instead of leaving with his original objective--the black powder--the remains behind to help the Chinese army fight against a demon army. His reason is obvious: the head turning Commander Lin (Jing Tian). Hail, I'd betray my buddies for a shot at that out of my league lady.😁

The movie should have been titled The Wall, because there is nothing Great about it.😏

Is a fair writeup, I have all barring Annihilation which didn't gel with me. That said will give it another shot soon. For those with interest here's the link to the article.

An alien sent to Earth to harvest humans begins to question her identity. She hunts them by seduction. If Scarlett Johansson starts flirting with me it would raise a lot of 🚩🚩🚩 that I'd pointedly ignore.😏

Either you'll love it or you'll hate it. I found it boring with the story moving at a plodding pace and no motivation for why she's hunting men. So many blanks in the story that makes no sense unless you've read the book. On the plus side, Scarlett Johansson.😍 She is a better actor than what she lets on as Black Widow. Everything she experiences on Earth is new to the alien. Johansson does a bang up job portraying that without excessive dialogue/monologue.

Turn on the subtitle, because the accent is thick on most of the cast. Also a lot of beautiful shots of Scotland's landscape.🥰

Read the book, it's better.

I recommend “The color out of space”, from an HPL story. Nic Cage in a lovecraftian story is a must watch in itself, but I have to admit that the movie is quite good (for what it is).
