As is typically the case with CES product announcements, Samsung isn’t sharing any pricing details on the ViewFinity S9 yet, but says it will ship “early” this year. Apple’s Studio Display, which is also 27 inches, starts at $1,599 when configured with the standard glossy screen. My gut says that Samsung will undercut that with its stylish 5K display, but it’ll be interesting to see just how aggressive the price is.

It seems a safe bet that this will price exactly the same as LG's 5k display, at around $1299, rather than try to match Apple's Studio Display.

" It can charge laptops at up to 96 watts."

Good grief. This might be the real deal "dumb" 5K with all the goodies with multiple I/0 and MacBook charging.

This: It ships with a slim 4K webcam in the box that you can attach as needed for video calls, and Samsung says the software will automatically zoom and intelligently track the subject.

So when the camera goes bad, you don't have to ship your whole display back.

Doesn't look like it's a "dumb" display:

"Even though this monitor is geared towards prosumers, that hasn’t stopped Samsung from building its Tizen TV OS into the ViewFinity S9. So you’ll be able to access all the usual streaming apps even when the display isn’t connected to any external devices."

That's unfortunate.

true. I forgot about all the streaming junk they will add. I was thinking more along the lines of no A Chip or Camera built in. If [pricing is closer to $1299 then I will put up with built in Netflix. LOL

The Samsung's 4k camera is going to be doing an interpretation of Apple's Center Stage so it'll likely have quality that's similar to the Studio Display, and not the full 4k resolution one might actually want in a webcam. Either way, there's going to be a SoC in there, like the one in the Studio Display. Aside from having an external camera, this doesn't sound very different than the Studio Display and adds the issues that come with it running its own proprietary OS.
I'll also be surprised if all the inputs offer full 5k resolution– the LG 5k will only do 4k resolution over USB-C.

I love my lg 5k, but man I wish it had more inputs. One tb port only sucks.

Reaching here, but if the mouse and the keyboard are plugged into a display, and one switches display modes, like from Mac to Win.

Do the keyboard and mouse inputs also change?

Dang. Now I need a MacMini, strap it behind the display somehow and then change the input, boom. quick testing machine.

I hope it supports DSC so you can pair 2 of them to a thunderbolt 4 macbook pro with 1 cable (and a thunderbolt 4 dock)

This looks very interesting and it’s nice to finally see competition in the 5K space. It’s not a “dumb” monitor at all, looks like they’re positioning it as a high end smart monitor with the smart calibration features, streaming, webcam, etc. Not surprising since it runs Tizen and Samsung has as many SOC chips laying around as Apple does. I’d guess it’s a $1299 list price monitor but a much lower street price. The multiple input ports alone are going to make this highly attractive.

I am guessing this will be a more enticing product than the Studio Display in every imaginable way, but will compromise the actual display itself in some way.

An interesting CES announcement right out of the gates on Monday morning. This increases the options for someone who wants to replace an aging 27" 5K iMac but who hasn't exactly fallen in love with the Studio Monitor pricing.

That's assuming the Samsung is priced lower, of course. Having that smart TV crap pre-installed should lower the price, too. You know companies like Netflix are paying to have their apps come pre-installed.

I just hope there are non-Samsung options for color calibration. I can't imagine them locking that down and making color calibration proprietary if they're trying to market it to professionals. Eager to see where this goes as more information comes out!

Any chance this will receive a glossy variant? Or am I being too hopeful that anyone other than Apple will offer a non-matte screened monitor.

The more high resolution monitor options, the better. It’s time we ditch that 1080p crap. Text and UI looks so awful on those displays.

Is this monitor really Thunderbolt or just USB-C? I'm seeing some mixed info on this. (Is Thunderbolt required for 5K? I'm not sure.) Good to see it's IPS though.

BTW, they are also going to be releasing a 27" of their M8 4K. I wonder if that means it's also VA. I don't like 32" VA, but perhaps a 27" VA panel might be more tolerable for some users at the same seating distances.

The sadly ironic part here is that it's very likely that the 27" 4K VA monitor will have the 2304x1296 scaled resolution I prefer, but the 27" 5K IPS monitor will not. The Apple 5K iMac, Apple Studio Display, and LG UltraFine 5K all are missing the 2304x1296 scaled resolution, but most of the various third party 4K monitors have that 2304x1296 scaled option in macOS.

P.S. Looking at reviews of the M8 online, it seems the image tracking of the camera just doesn't seem to work properly. The camera quality may be better though. It's also tiltable separate from the monitor.
