You do understand that aluminum is about the cheapest metal you can buy right? It is also a great disperser of heat...so its best for electronics. It is very difficult to weld as a result, but it is bendable...making it easy to fabricate into shapes. The polymer they are using on the 5C actually feels more solid than the 5. I had a 5, now I have a 5S. I don't like the colors of the 5C..but I went and picked one up and the materials (as always for apple) are TOP NOTCH. I know everyone has a stigma over "plastic" but there are many types of plastic. This isn't some cheapo clamshell.

I don't mind plastic at all b.c it means I have to baby my phone less since I use it naked. I could almost guarantee it is more expensive to make the 5 than 5C though. The anodizing process alone probably is cause for that.

It's almost like they're trying to hide the 5s.

You go to Apple.com and you have to dig to find it. Meanwhile they shove the 5C in your face.

Yeah, really hidden. What is your agenda here?

Think about it. The 5C is BRIGHT and COLORFUL....if more people are walking around with them they will be much more easily noticed. Free marketing for apple. Black phones don't stand out.

The gold is something that apple has never done...so by only having a handful in the wild they will create even more hype.

Quantity of inventory was very masterfully strategized on their part. It has nothing to do with how many they could produce...it's all for desired effect once you leave the store! They know you will have this thing in your hands in public 95% of the time you are out. The more noticeable you are, the more they will sell.

Too much thought here. The fingerprint scanner is the cause for the low supply and no pre-order. Gold is new so they made less. The black probably always sells the most and that is why there were so many more at launch.

Let's be honest. It's a plastic phone. It feels like plastic. Build quality is ok. Only apple apologists will say it feels better than cheap plastic? All plastic is cheap. Geez. And it's over priced.

I seriously doubt its that simple. Have you ever worked in marketing or advertising?

What's going to hurt them is that people are finally catching on to how much it really costs to buy a phone on plan. I actually just responded to another post with this same point more or less.

Basically, more and more people are realizing that the $100 iPhone 5C isn't 50% off the price of the price of a 5S. It's a 15% discount for last year's phone, and that doesn't sound very appealing.

The device itself is solid... honestly I kind of like the feel of it, and it's likely to be more resistant to minor impacts than the very soft, dent-able aluminum. But it's last year's phone for 15% off, so who cares?

To address the original point, they'll have no trouble moving this initial stock. The user who buys a 5C isn't likely to be the kind of person who has to get a new phone on launch. Many of these will be sold to casual buyers who want an iPhone, don't care about the latest tech, and like the colors when they see them.

While that may be true I did see photos of the device earlier and the way they appeared on camera... plastic is plastic and I swore off plastic since 2010, but that's just me.

I was just wondering how Apple is going to approach this dilemma or do they not really care?

Yes I have. I know where people are coming from, but they are not with-holding gold phones b.c it generates hype. The amount of people who want gold is very niche.

That's my biggest complaint. It's not a new phone in any way. All they did was replace the 5 with a colorful variant, eliminating black.

There hasn't been a 5s commercial either.

Don't buy it.

It was never my intention to. But I suppose I think of it like this, the iPhone 5c is easier to make I suppose so that's why you can get one in 24 hours, but not the 5s.

Thing is I don't care from their end, I just want to know why they're not treating their devices as equals.

Just curious - Apple clearly wanted to create a phone $100 less than the flagship. How could it have been as "new" as the flagship?

Look at their marketing for the 5S...its ALL about the gold. Yet most stores didn't get a single gold handset in stock.

Trust me it is niche. The black and white will outsell the gold by massive margins and it has nothing to do with stock. I would be willing to bet black outsells white at least 2 to 1 if not more

They could've not made it out of plastic, then I might have been interested.

They used to sell Macbooks for more than the price of a 5c made of polycarbonate. What's different now?

The typical solution would have been to continue to produce the 5 at a lower price. That's what they, historically, have done. This time they decided to EOL the previous model and replace it with a new colorful variant and very intentionally leave out black as an option. Therefore making anyone (mostly adult males) that want a black iPhone to have only 1 choice. The more expensive 5S. Pretty genius IMHO.

What I think is going to happen is that they're going to push the 5c for a good 2 years, soft firesale it and then discontinue it.

Kids that complain on this forum aren't old enough to remember the poly macbooks. I do..and they were exceptionally built...but I hated the colors of those too.

100% agree with that

As someone who owns a black iPhone 5, and has ordered a silver iPhone 5s online and patiently waiting for it to arrive, I will say that I kinda wish the 5c has the better camera, the A7 and the fingerprint sensor. If it did, I would've bought either a blue or white plastic model.

Why? Cosmetic durability. The 5c models are going to look a lot less worn than an anodized aluminum anything after a year or two of use. As hard as I've tried to baby my 5, I still have some nicks and scuffs on it, that I know wouldn't be nearly as obvious on plastic.

And anyone who doesn't think thre's a difference between high end polycarbonates and cheap plastic needs to do a little history homework, and look up the Motorola StarTAC vs its redheaded stepcousing, theMotorola talkabout. Both phones had the same internals.. the difference was the type of plastic used.

What dilemna? If there was a dilemma, I'm pretty sure they'd care about it, since they are in the business to make money. But right now the only dilemna I see is someone assuming that an iPhone model is a flop before anyone has even seen sales figures. All while completely ignoring the fact that it's the mid-range model, basically patterned technology after the 5... a model that already has 30 million+ units out in the field.

I agree that black (or maybe dark navy or something) should have been offered. But no one would be complaining if the 5 were sold at $99. They gave the 5 slight component upgrade and put it in a new case that is appealing to a lot of people. The issue I have is why people feel so threatened / upset by it.
